"Well written, funny, sexy, and altogether satisfying." (Publishers Weekly)
"[A] lively, well-written story. Phillips combines an unexpected premise with warm, appealing characters, and overlays it all with her zingy trademark humor and well-developed sense of the ridiculous." (Library Journal)
I absolutely love this author (SEP) and this is one of her best books, in my opinion. It is very funny, and of course, a great love story. The characters are awesome. There are some truly laugh-out-loud parts. Normally Im not a fan of the reader, Anna Fields. I like the way she does the men's voices, but she always sounds a little nasally with the women, and their intonations aren't how I would have read them had I seen the on paper. However, the main character in this book is from England and she does a great accent and I really liked it. I'd highly recommend this audiobook! Hard to put down.
Lady Emma Wells-Finch arrives in small town Texas with one objective: to scandalize herself so that her undesirable fiance will call off their engagement. But there's a catch, she has to be subtle about it. Otherwise she fears he will close the boarding school she's headmistress of and regards as home. When she meets the handsome bad-boy golfer Kenny Traveler he seems like the perfect companion to help her scandalize herself. Unfortunately, he's trying to save his own skin and isn't initially eager to help her. Like so many of SEP's novels, the characters in this one (especially the male protagonist) seem to have it all together on the outside. But, the experiences of their past have damaged them, making it difficult for Emma and Kenny to come to terms with their budding relationship.
Of course, one of the things I love about SEP's novels is that there's always a secondary love story taking place. This one is between Kenny's sister Torie and Dexter, whom she regards as the biggest dweeb in Wynette, Texas. Fortunately, Dexter has few tricks up his sleeves which help him win the heart of the precocious, over-entitledTorie.
Anna Fields is an excellent narrator, bringing southern charm to Kenny's voice and British dry humor to Emma's.
It was a funny book, but not really a believable plot line.
When she's in the store and throwing everything in her cart that could possibly make her look bad and then his response when he's teasing her about it.
Yeah, it had funny parts and moments...
I never listen or read a book twice, what would be the point in that?
This was the second book by Susan E. Phillips I have purchased, and will try another one when I'm in the mood for giggles.
Anna Fields does a great job with the different accents. I forget there is only her performing.
There wasn't just one moment that stands out, but the humor with the "Hero" was great.
Day dreaming book lover!
Anna Fields makes the story. Her character voices are wonderful and she nails the personality of each character to totally enchant the listener. I liked the story too, don't get me wrong because it was entertaining and of course, romantic. But Anna Fields has to be given her due, without her, the story might not have been as entertaining.
I own both the audio and print and I really enjoyed the audio. There are some parts that Anna Fields just brings to life in a way that I can't imagine myself doing as I read along.
Any SEP book is going to be about the same: light, romantic, and full of fun. This may be my favorite by her, but Ain't She Sweet would be a close second.
Anna Fields' Lady Emma was spot on. She had a bearable accent, but played all of the reserve and eventual emotion perfectly.
Wonderful book, in typical SEP fashion! Thanks for the excellent read!
Good read! Started slow but once it got going, I loved it. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is becoming one of my favorite authors! This one was not as good as Glitter Baby but was right up there. You would not be wasting a credit on either of these books. They are the kind that you can't wait to get back to and are sorry when they are finished.
Yes, this book made me laugh and enjoy even the family fights.
I enjoyed this book as much as Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie.
I love her stile. She took ownership over the characters to help us see each scene.
Yes, the description of each character was so good that I felt like if I knew them.
I will look for Susan Elizabeth Phillips's books and also for the books read by Anna Fields.

Field's performance was terrific. The voices were great.
