Publisher's summary

The rules of marriage...according to Miss Annabel Essex. A husband must be:

  • Rich. Make that very rich. She's had enough of leaky roofs and thread-worn clothing.
  • English. London is the center of the civilized world, and Annabel has a passion for silk and hot water.
  • Amiable. Good-looking would be nice, but not necessary. Same for intelligent.

Isn't she lucky? She's found just the man! And her chosen spouse is nothing like the impoverished Scottish Earl of Ardmore, who has nothing but his gorgeous eyes, his brain - and his kisses - to recommend him.

So what cruel twist of fate put her in a carriage on her way to Scotland with just that impoverished earl and all the world thinking they're man and wife? Sleeping in the same bed? Not to mention the game of words started by the earl - in which the prize is a kiss. And the forfeit....

Well. They are almost married, after all!

Frustrating leads

I generally really like Eloisa James stories but both the leads in this one were very frustrating. Annabel is really not very likable. Even tho she grows up poor and plans to marry a rich man, it doesn't excuse her whiny and self pitying attitude in most of the book. I didn't mind the male lead, Ewan, that much till they get to Scotland and he pulls a trick on her to test her. Then he became a jerk too. Eloisa James is usually witty and fun. This story is just old tired tropes not very well handled.

Susan Duerdan was ok. She perhaps whispered too much but she did her best with what she had to work with.

Lovely story

Any additional comments?

Another good book by Eloisa James. I can't imagine living in times like this where what people said about you could alter your life forever. In this book, Annabel Essex has to get married to the Earl of Ardmore because of a scandal brought on by the lies sold to the papers. He takes her to Scotland to wed her in his homeland and promises to not compromise her until they reach their destination and are married. Their journey brings them in a close enough contact that they fall madly and passionately in love.
Good storyline, narration and love story.

I love the series.... but

Omg. The character imagine was so hateful in book one it was upsetting then to pick up book 2 and find they're still sprinkling it with this hateful woman woman Was a bit much. Other than that I loved book 1 and 2 end and planning on skipping images story how do you redeem a character after 2 books of her being evil or rather just spoiled spoiled hateful .

Enjoyable read!

I loved this book, it was very entertaining. The Essex sisters are hilarious. My one issue with the book is that the first 10 chapters are not about the main character. It was confusing. In fact, the story jumps around so much if I hadn't read Book 1, I'd have been completely lost.
I still gave it 5 stars even though the book's structure is a bit clumsy. EJ weaves the story and sub stories together eventually.
The narration was good.

Stupid Plot

This was a stupid book. Annabel, the lead female, wanted a rich handsome husband, and did not ever want to return to Scotland, where she was born. She ended up with Lord Ardmore who was from Scotland and was said to be dead broke and in search of an heiress to marry. They were returning to his home in Scotland to be married. The chemistry between them ignited and they were very attracted to one another. The stupid part was that Annabel decided that Lord Ardmore did not love her and was not right for her because he desired her too much. So her solution was to abandon him even though she loved him and he said he loved her. There are a lot of other stupid parts to the book but they are too numerous to mention. The book just fell apart ion the second half. It just was not good - not enjoyable.

I love the story line.

I love these two but the one sister that I can’t stand is Imogene. She’s terrible! Terrible in every single way. I wish she wasn’t a part of this story . She’s selfish to the bone

More Scots accent please.

The developing romance between Annabel and Ardmore was very sweet. I really wish there was more of a Scottish accent to Ardmore. I found it too light. Eloisa James puts so many points of view in this series that it’s hard to follow at times who the story is really about. It’s like watching a soap opera. Overall I enjoyed the story.

Wonderful

Every story has its inspiration and then the author writes their own story. James’ inspiration from one of the classics, then turning it own it’s head with her own story was fabulous.
