As a mercenary, Kat Darah doesn't have to pass for a normal human. On the edge of the solar system, she's just another biped. Most of the time.
Nearing the end of his military tour, Lt. Christopher Rygard debates the idea of hanging up his uniform for good. Looking for answers at the bottom of a glass of scotch, he meets Kat. One shared night of mutual desire seems harmless. But when their tryst is interrupted by attackers hunting Rygard, Kat must reveal her other form, the predator beneath the human facade.
Together they embark on a dangerous mission - a race against time to meet the enemy's demands, while trying to deny the passion between them. Rygard is faced with a terrible choice in the face of duty: Report the existence of a human turned shape-shifter. Or forget he ever met her.

The dulcet tones from this narrator were an immediate attention getter. The prose was equally surprising. I've listened to no fewer than 30 audiobooks in the past 3 months, a quarter of which were books I'd already read. I listen while I make jewelry. This is an excellent example of good things coming in small packages.
The narrators voice lent such a great ambience and did well with the different characters. Unlike some narrators, she does well with the male voice without it being over the top. The hero's voice in particular was solid and consistent with the author's intent.
The story was really unexpected. I'm am NOT a fan shapeshifter/werewolf/were whatever genre in romance, paranormal or scifi. Schnyder's treatment was very different, tasteful, and intriguing.
I really enjoyed the storyline, the 'normality' of a military/merc waystation in a distant galaxy somewhere and the degenerating military missions from which the dude is emerging with a heavy heart. The droll, cantankerous (petite) heroine who has to knock the haphazard bar fighters aside to wend her way to the bar was fun and well done.
I totally recommend this <3 hour audiobook, and can't wait to look for more by this author and narrator. I rarely give 5 stars, so this book gets a "good" from me.
