Publisher's summary

With this captivatingly witty debut, Vicky Dreiling immediately established herself as an author of note in the world of Regency romance. How to Seduce a Scoundrel introduces readers to Miss Julianne Gatewick, a comely lass who finds herself seduced by a rake’s sensual waltz. But when the unapologetic lothario leaves her all aflutter—and moves on to his next dalliance—Julianne decides to prick the sides of scoundrels everywhere by penning a guide to reeling in England’s most notorious cads.

Rinse & Repeat

Parts were Fun & Flirty. I enjoyed the banter and tension between the two. However, it became kind of tedious for about 6-7 chapters it was the same back and forth with no real character or story development. Hawke just became kind of ignorant & childish. Much could have been consolidated it was just fluff. I enjoyed the first 15% and then the last 20%. Everything in between was kind of boring.

Sweet Regency romance

I love Regency romances, you can just visualise the balls, the dresses, the carriages and of course the handsome rakes and scoundrels. Good romantic story.

Good narrator too.

Like the story line

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hawk. He was complex

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator. The narration sounded like reading rather than truly a performance like Barbara Rosenblat or Davina Porter

What would have made this romance irresistible?

A little more dept. A little too much he said she said. But again, it could have been narrated better. Hopefully, the next one will be narrated better

Scoundrels are so fun!

Great dialogue between characters and a fun story. Great story from a new up and coming author. Can't wait for her next book. Hopefully it will be available via audio book as well.

Very Disappointed

Any additional comments?

After really enjoying "How to Marry a Duke", which preceded this book, I found this follow up extremely disappointing. It's as if the author had one good book in her and then just threw this out there knowing we would buy it to follow the story. There was no plot, no interesting story line. I had to just stop listening numerous times due to being so annoyed by the simpering, tittering school girl atmosphere that permeated the story. There was sex without romance, "un-witty" banter and the same repetitious "woe is me" whining from both parties through out the book. While I found the narrator acceptable in the first book, I found her grating in this one. The book lacked the swept away romance and lovely descriptions of the times and places that I look for in historical romances. Sorry. Rarely ever this harsh a criticism, but this book was truly a waste of my money. JB

I just couldn't listen to this narrator.

What disappointed you about How to Seduce a Scoundrel?

There are a number of narrators that could have read this book better. Male or female, any choice would have helped.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

A voice like Prebble or even Eastlake or Potter.

What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Jasicki’s performance?

It was too difficult to get passed her version of "old english" elderly and gentry. she tried too hard to get a range of tones.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Unforunately, disappointment. It my be a good story, but I'd have to READ it to know.

Stream of conflict...

...due to bad or no communication (and mistrust). No interesting plot or period details to keep me interested. Poor dialogue, especially for a Regency novel.

DNF

Boring.....Like watching paint dry!

Would you try another book from Vicky Dreiling and/or Elizabeth Jasicki?

This is my second book from Vicky Dreiling and I enjoyed the first one -- however, this book was so boring I doubt if I could listen to another one.

Has How to Seduce a Scoundrel turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, not at all.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Either it was the narration, or the monotonous story-telling that just seemed to drone on and on..... I had to skip around a lot. The voices for the other characters were horrid - especially the friends voices which is really odd because the narrator did not sound this bad with another book I had listened from her.

What character would you cut from How to Seduce a Scoundrel?

The H and the heroine were both insufferable and boring -- never direct about how they felt. Too many hurt feeling, and the H was marginally sadistic on how he treated her, at one point I expected him to spank her. It was disgusting. She on the other hand had no spunk, no personality just a lot of hurt feelings. -- Yet, she was brave enough to write a pamphlet to guide young woman on the art of seduction, but was clueless on how to snare the H. Completely unbelievable as a plot device and totally unnecessary to the story.
