"About (rather than necessarily for) children"

I wondered why this well-reviewed book (beautifully read by Laurel Lefkow) should have attracted such lukewarm ratings. I suspect that the answer may lie in some confusion about its intended audience. Although winner of the Guardian Children's Prize it's no more a 'children's book' than other previous winners from the likes of Mal Peet, Patrick Ness or Mark Haddon. Each has written books featuring children as the main protagonists and used language which is less dense than that found in adult literary fiction but then use the vantage point to tell stories which can be enjoyed by anyone.
The same is true of this book; at once a teenage confessional, a love story, a survivor's tale and an alternate history. It is written in the first person as an account of 15 year old Daisy's trip to Britain on the eve of a future war. The book is alternately harrowing and life-affirming as Daisy and her cousins strive to keep body and soul together as their world disintegrates.
The book is not perfect and is in truth more of a novella than a novel but it's well written, thought provoking and has the perfect narrator in Laurel Lefkow. I greatly enjoyed it.

"The things that break your heart..."
What made the experience of listening to How I Live Now the most enjoyable?

Rosoff's novel is narrated by Daisy in a stream-of-consciousness style. I'm sure it 'reads' better aloud, rather than on the page, as it is Daisy recounting the events that happened during her stay in rural England and the outbreak of a Third World War.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Daisy. She has issues, is an unreliable narrator in many senses, but at the same time, completely honest.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Being a novel about War and the damage it does to all involved - particularly civilian children - I wouldn't say there are many scenes to enjoy, but rather, you appreciate them. That said, I did quite enjoy hearing Daisy's take on her cousins and their life in England compared to her previous existence in the more sophisticated and cosmopolitan city of New York.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it. It's a slow build in threat, that culminates in an appalling atrocity.

    Story
    "Book club read, not great"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There was nothing wrong with the narration, the subject of the book just didn't thrill me.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Sorry I didn't make it to the end.

Which character – as performed by Laurel Lefkow – was your favourite?

I wasn't really captured by any of them

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I think it is aimed at the teenage market so I think my daughter would like it...I'll pass it on.

Would you consider the audio edition of How I Live Now to be better than the print version?

I don't get time to read a book but with this I could listen and do things at the same time

Who was your favorite character and why?

    I didn't really have a favourite character

What does Laurel Lefkow bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I love audio books because the person reading it makes it sound like there real story

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

This book has been made into a film and that's why I read it.

    Any additional comments?

Worth a read as I doubt the film will do it justice.
