Publisher's summary

At the tender age of 25, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she's become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she'll see her mettle - and her metal - tested like never before.

It started with two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago's vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

Critic reviews

"Rising star Neill has made the learning curve for her gutsy heroine, Merit, quite steep, which means the journey is all the more spellbinding." ( Romantic Times)

Narrator improving with each book

I wanted to disagree with those who have expressed disappointment with Sophie Eastlake's performance. I started the series a few weeks ago and have been listening to them one after another (and really enjoying them!).

It was disconcerting to get to book 6 and find a new narrator, and I did have some trouble adjusting to the change at first, but with House Rules I thought that Sophie Eastlake really hit her stride and did an excellent job.

I've just started Book 8, Biting Bad, and the performance is only getting better in my opinion. In fact I think that is the big improvement over the previous narrator. There is a lot more theatricality to the way she voices the characters and their emotions. I find her very believable.

Why change the narrator?

IF I MAKE IT THROUGH THE BOOK IT WILL BE A MIRACLE!!! The story isn't bad but for some reason the narrator is so monotone that I can hardly pay attention. She speaks softly and all of the male characters sound the same. (Gruff or tired) she sounds bored. HOPE the next book goes back to the original narrator. Being that it is an audio book this is important more energy is needed to keep the listers attention.

Narrator Thumbs Down

No offense to Sophie Eastlake but she really is making this series suck for me (Her accents are all wrong and there isn't enough definition between the character voices). I was hoping they would get Cynthia Holloway back again but alas...no...

Seriously considering hard copies for the next one. Story is still good!

Not sold yet on the new narrator

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I am still having a hard time with the new narrator. She did better this book.

Any additional comments?

Still looking forward to the next book in the series.

House Rules

Things are getting set into motion, I kind of like the way the story is detouring.
I can’t wait to see where this new direction is going to take Merit but I have a feeling it will be for the good.
I think everyone in the house are in for an awakening but in a good way.

Again I am loving Sophie’s narration her voices for some people make the audio experience so much more.

exciting

Any additional comments?

While Neill's stories have been back and forth for me I enjoyed House Rules. Not as good as the first two but very worth the read.

lying in wait

Ethan is determined to take his house into the next step. Meanwhile Merit and Jonah are trying to find out who is killing vampires. Merit joins the Red Guard and is seen with Jonah by Ethan's ex. Merit has to come clean. This story was fast moving and very suspenseful. Sophie Eastlake does a fine job narrating.⚘⚘⚘

Not wasting my time again

I'm not getting another one. I knew I shouldn't have gotten this one, but wanted to be wrong. The story just keeps getting weaker and weaker.
