Editorial reviews

Narrator Natalie Ross brings terrific pace, expressiveness, and wit to Susan Mallery’s fourth and final installment of her Lone Star Sisters series. Ross makes the most of the fast-paced, snappy dialogue, as well as the satisfyingly rich emotional foundation that is the trademark of Mallery’s storytelling.

The hero and heroine are both tough, smart, and fearless. They also share a sense of themselves as outsiders whose childhood traumas left them with thick layers of emotional body armor. Ross’ perceptive grasp of their fears and vulnerabilities around love gives their romance, with its two-steps-forward-one-step-back tension, a deeply satisfying depth and intimacy for the listener.

Ross captures the complex thrill of a first kiss that also carries the realization that these two people’s hearts are suddenly in danger. Then she turns around and brings laugh-out-loud hilarity to the makeover scene where our heroine makes her first horrified encounter with shapewear.

Hot on Her Heels brings the three heroines from the previous stories back together, and Ross effortlessly differentiates between the four women. She moves easily between izzy’s boundless energy, Lexi’s warmth, and Sky’s big-sister protectiveness. And she gives depth and richness to heroine Dana Birch’s tough, self-protective determination as all four women deal with careers, family, love, and life.

it’s also a pleasure to hear how she finds satisfying variations in the raft of Texan voices, and brings a particularly light touch to the voice of Kathy, the hero’s mentally handicapped mother.

Ross conveys the emotional richness of the characters without sacrificing the dramatic tension of the suspense elements in the plot. Her pace slows nicely when characters are challenged to grow and change emotionally, picking up speed and urgency when they must take action against a villain out to destroy anything that gets in his way, including his family, friends, and his country.

Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first three books in the Lone Star Sisters series, Hot on her Heels is a wonderfully satisfying standalone story made all the more enjoyable by a clever and talented narrator. Nancy Carter

Publisher's summary

Dana Birch vowed never to put herself at the mercy of a powerful man. She became a deputy so that she could take care of herself, and protect those she loved. Especially her best friends, the Titan sisters.

Twenty years ago, Garth Duncan swore revenge on Jed Titan for abandoning Garth and his mother. Now he's back to fulfill that promise, even if Jed's daughters get caught in the crosshairs. All that stands between him and his goal is Dana, her gun, and a growing passion that can't be denied...

Fine ending to entertaining series

I have just listened to this series which I read several years ago. I think it's a mistake to change narrators for the last book in a series, but I enjoyed. them nonetheless. These were good escape reading.

Not my favorite but a good wrap up

Not sure why. Honestly this could have been the choppy way I read it.
It was a great redemption story and brought the family together. The book tied up all the various stories in a sweet bow.

Good story - But...

What does Natalie Ross bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I would have preferred to stick with Julie Francis for continuity of the series, but I don't mind Natalie Ross like others do.

I do have an issue though with the sound levels. Whether it is Ms. Ross' interpretation of male voices (they go too low for the microphone?) vs. female (they're loud) or the sound engineer not adapting for it, there are times when I have to turn up the volume to hear it. The audio is too loud in some places, and too quiet in others. Rather like watching a tv show that switches to too loud commercials. Unfortunate.

Yes, you need to finish a series.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I was disappointed in the change in narrator for the last of the series.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Natalie Ross?

Julie Frances

Great ending to the series

I loved this book! I have listened to the series several times, each time with a delicious anticipation of what awaits when I finally get to listen to the Garth and Dana story again. I enjoyed the way all the story lines are wrapped up but the sparks between Garth and Dana make me smile for days after listening to it again.

Who's idea was it to change narrators?

After the first three and the same narrator this is throwing me and making me want to stop listening after 5 minutes! Still debating returning. I can buy the ebook and finish the series. This is very distracting. Very, very distracting...

I don't recommend doing this again Harlequin...

Not my favorite SM book...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was an ok experience.

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next listen will be Falling For Gracie. Same author but a better narrator: Therese Plummer.

Did Natalie Ross do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Sometimes it was difficult to differentiate the characters. All males sounded the same. Al females sounded the same. Natalie Ross does have a pleasant voice so it was nice to listen to her.

Was Hot on Her Heels worth the listening time?

It's worth the listening time if you buy it on sale. For me it was just ok. I do need to clarify that this was the only book in the series that I listened to and I will not buy the other ones. I love Susan Mallery's book but they far the best narrators for her books are either Therese Plummer or Savannah Richards.

Any additional comments?

This story has some twists and turns that make the story interesting and unpredictable.
