Editorial reviews

Narrator Natalie Ross brings terrific pace, expressiveness, and wit to Susan Mallery’s fourth and final installment of her Lone Star Sisters series. Ross makes the most of the fast-paced, snappy dialogue, as well as the satisfyingly rich emotional foundation that is the trademark of Mallery’s storytelling.

The hero and heroine are both tough, smart, and fearless. They also share a sense of themselves as outsiders whose childhood traumas left them with thick layers of emotional body armor. Ross’ perceptive grasp of their fears and vulnerabilities around love gives their romance, with its two-steps-forward-one-step-back tension, a deeply satisfying depth and intimacy for the listener.

Ross captures the complex thrill of a first kiss that also carries the realization that these two people’s hearts are suddenly in danger. Then she turns around and brings laugh-out-loud hilarity to the makeover scene where our heroine makes her first horrified encounter with shapewear.

Hot on Her Heels brings the three heroines from the previous stories back together, and Ross effortlessly differentiates between the four women. She moves easily between izzy’s boundless energy, Lexi’s warmth, and Sky’s big-sister protectiveness. And she gives depth and richness to heroine Dana Birch’s tough, self-protective determination as all four women deal with careers, family, love, and life.

it’s also a pleasure to hear how she finds satisfying variations in the raft of Texan voices, and brings a particularly light touch to the voice of Kathy, the hero’s mentally handicapped mother.

Ross conveys the emotional richness of the characters without sacrificing the dramatic tension of the suspense elements in the plot. Her pace slows nicely when characters are challenged to grow and change emotionally, picking up speed and urgency when they must take action against a villain out to destroy anything that gets in his way, including his family, friends, and his country.

Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first three books in the Lone Star Sisters series, Hot on her Heels is a wonderfully satisfying standalone story made all the more enjoyable by a clever and talented narrator. Nancy Carter

Publisher's summary

Dana Birch vowed never to put herself at the mercy of a powerful man. She became a deputy so that she could take care of herself, and protect those she loved. Especially her best friends, the Titan sisters.

Twenty years ago, Garth Duncan swore revenge on Jed Titan for abandoning Garth and his mother. Now he's back to fulfill that promise, even if Jed's daughters get caught in the crosshairs. All that stands between him and his goal is Dana, her gun, and a growing passion that can't be denied...

Yay! a story for Dana! Worth listening to!!

If you could sum up Hot on Her Heels in three words, what would they be?

strong, honest, finally

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hot on Her Heels?

In the motel room with Jed and Kathy.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Garth Realizes he loves Dana.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily. It was very good but dod not quite have the grip the other books in the series had.

Any additional comments?

I liked this book a lot. May even listen to it again. It lost some of the intensity that the other three books had in the series though. I am really glad however that Dana got a story too and it was really interesting to see how Susan Mallery brought Garth into the fold.

A narrator sure can ruin a good series!

I was looking forward to this last story in the series but the narrator makes it very difficult to listen to. She sounds sort of whiney and Garth's voice is pretty high pitched. Talk about emasculating the hero. The cadence was difficult to get through as well. She sort of pauses after every 3 or 4 words. Who talks like that? As you can tell, the most of what I recall is about the narrator and not the story. I quit listening after about two hours and have purchased it from Barnes & Noble to read it instead.

Wonderful Series

What did you love best about Hot on Her Heels?

4.5 Stars - TOP PICK! The final chapter in Mallery’s series featuring the Titan sisters wraps up in style as
the bonds of family are tested to the max. As demonstrated in this compelling story, family doesn’t have to share
blood, just emotions. Filled with emotional drama, devastating treachery and the power of love

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hot on Her Heels?

When they spar, it's a refreshing battle between two equal and fast-thinking minds6this glimpse into glitzy Texas
high society and the dark underbelly of business is a thoroughly enjoyable

Disappointed in the change narration.

Would you consider the audio edition of Hot on Her Heels to be better than the print version?

Love the series but hate the narration change! It change the whole feel of the series and the characters you have come to know.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes -- the change in narrator change the feel of the series and not in a good way.

Best in the series

The narrator was great, better than the other books. I almost didn't read it because of other reviews about the narrator. So glad I decided to take a chance.

Unhappy with the change in Narrator!

I have enjoyed listening to this series so I purchased the last book to complete the series. I never thought to check the narrator. Why would they change the narrator for the last book in the series. You get so used to the voice, the characters. This narrator doesn't even sound at all like the other one, to breathy and so far most characters sound the same. Very dissapointed! I have to listen to hear the conclusion to the series but it's not going to be enjoyable!

Great series closing story but lousy narration

I really enjoyed this series and I liked the closing story of Garth's transformation and he and Dana's relationship.. However, the narration of the book was poor which was really disappointing. Words were sometimes lost at the end of a phrase. I tried turning the volume up, but then the sound was strident and too loud at times. Changing speed didn't help either. Male voices all sounded the same. I debated on just ditching the audio and buying an e-book to find out how the story ended, but after the first few chapters I got used to the sound. It was tolerable and I was able to get into the story.

I don’t know what this was,

but there was no filling out details of the plot.

This was a strange book. It’s people having conversations. People talk about people, and things that happened, or might happen, and maybe why things happened. It’s telling not showing. I didn’t feel any emotion because no one is doing anything that causes feelings. Three sisters talk to Dana and the group decides Dana will follow Garth for a while. Dana shows up in his lobby. When he sees her he invites her to his condo for dinner. She tells him she will be following him. But we don’t see him go places with her behind in a car or whatever. They have dinner three nights in a row. They have sex. The surveillance was something to say, but I didn’t see any surveillance being done.

I listened to more than half the book and was bored. So I skipped to the last two chapters. Even they did not interest me.

I bought the audiobook because I love the narrator Natalie Ross. She is one of the few female narrators who can do men well. But even Natalie couldn’t make this a better story.

Narrative mode: 3rd person.
Genre: contemporary romance.

Narration ruined story

If I hadn’t invested my heart in the Titan sisters I would have turned it off after 2 min of listening to the narration. The voices, annunciation, accent and the attempt at sex and lure was unbearable.
