Outsmarting the Serial Killer, Finding Romance

Hostage Moon is a mysterious, fun, and engaging investigative drama. I was hooked by the punchy prose, whip-smart plotting, and strong women characters.

A successful, beautiful woman wakes in a dark alley in a pool of her own blood to learn that she is being toyed with and hunted by a serial killer from her past. She receives aid from an ex-FBI psychologist with problems of her own. The two find they have an undeniable mutual attraction. Will they be able to evade and catch the creepy psycho-villain, and find love at the same time?

An entertaining listen.

Strong Beginning Wasted

I was entranced by the first half of this audiobook. This was despite the characters inside this selection; outside of Hunter; were thinly drawn. Unfortunately the story collapsed under the weight of plot contrivances in the second part of this work. In the true nature of the romance writer the romance moves at the glacial pace that reflected an earlier era rather than the hook-up culture of the modern era.
In the end I can't recommend this selection. A.J. Quinn is a talented writer. However she needs to speed up the storyline if she is going to make a successful transition from Romance writer to the Mystery/ Thriller genre.

Lacking

I too was enticed by the beginning on the story but it quickly became mundane. Hunter was a character that I felt could have been developed into so much more. Sara was flat. Both characters were like able but neither made you want to go the extra mile. The pace of the romance was unrealistic and the backstory, felt contrived. I would give the author another shot because the premise of the book was good.

Quinn writes a good mystery and romance.

Where does Hostage Moon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its up there with Radcylffe, Gerri Hill and Erik Schabach who write the best lesbian romance writers. To me Quinn's spinning of a great mystery in with a romance novel takes a lot of talent, Radcyliffe tells an action packed sort of mystery tell with her Honor series and a mystery/romance series with her Justice series, and she also mixes in a little mystery in some of her p-town series, which is what makes them great. Hill tells a great mystery/romance story with her Hunter series, Also her Devil's Rock and Keeper series. All are action packed but the romance is first with Hill. Erik tells a great action young adult lesbian sci-fi/ fantasy story with his Valkyrie series, I also really like his Drakkon series, And what I hope turns into a series with his Bridge Trolls story. All are wonderful. Still I think the best think he writes is his music of the soul series. Which is simple good with no mystery like in Quinn's story. Which is well written story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sarah, was my favorite, I liked they way she tried to be professional, yet knew she was falling for Hunter. I really liked the scene where they simply held hands in the club and left the club that way. It was a great scene.

What does Bernadette Dunne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A good reading, straight forward story telling, good inflection, good dramatic pauses, good changing of voice for character. Generally excellent a good story teller.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Serial killer after the one woman who got away, a love afraid between ex-FBI agent and tormented woman. (I have no idea how to sum this up for Hollywood but it would make a great film)

Any additional comments?

It's an excellent story, great drama, great mystery, Great romance, Great characters. Just really great writing. Want to read other books by this author, Have Show of Force (May have name wrong) But it was also Awesome!

AWFUL

What would have made Hostage Moon better?

A better plot. More truthful advertising. Not a mystery but a lesbian love story.

What could A. J. Quinn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Nothing. I would not have purchased it had I realized how poorly written it was.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bernadette Dunne?

Narrator was good.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Just a love story advertised as mystery.

Any additional comments?

Don't buy it.

Nothing to do with werewolfes!

What did you love best about Hostage Moon?

Way differant then what I was thinking it was going to be about!

What did you like best about this story?

I thought this book had great suspence and thriller parts.

What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?

reader was good, boys sounded like boys and girls sounded like girls.

Any additional comments?

I like the romance books, all differant kinds. Although this book was way differant than what I usually listen too. Girl on Girl, I do have to say that I was suprised, but a little interged about how it would all play out and how it would be differant from man and women to girl and girl. So I contiued listening to this book. In my opinion it was harder for me to get the visual in my head then it should have. Although I have listen to a book that was guy and guy. I would have to say that visual was even harder.
I spend my hard earned money on these audio books and find it very dissapointing that we as listeners are only allowed to return on a one time thing.
I try to keep an open mind on all the books that I listen to cause I can not return them.
I will say to myself and others make sure you read between the lines more closely or you will end up listening to something you really don't want to know about.

The storyline and characters will captivate you.

Hostage Moon is a great title. When you find your one true love your heart and soul mix creating an addiction that can not be broken. It holds you hostage, willing you to make decisions and or sacrifices that may or may not be wise. A.J. Quinn skillfully took the characters through a maze of decisions and actions, making them hostages to their hearts and souls as well as the past and future. Then there is the “…Moon”. I pondered this for a bit. There are so many stories, poems, and myths about the moon. In January the full moon is called the “Wolf Moon” because many years ago hungry wolfs gathered outside villages hungrily howling. But “Harvest Moon”… why did Ms. Quinn select that title? Only she could tell you, but after reading, or listening to the audio book narrated by Bernadette Dunne (which is what I did), “Hostage Moon” is aptly named. You will crave more of her writings, and possibly want a sequel or two (which I don’t believe she does), just to stay in contact with her characters. Needless to say, whether it is this book or another, I highly recommend her books. The storyline and characters will captivate you.
