Good book, but Darth Vaderette was annoying

When I saw another's reference to Darth Vader I laughed out loud. It was exactly my thought when I was listening to this novel - the more intense the scene, the more Darth Vader would have been jealous of the hissing stage whisper that turned what would have been a good listen into a comical gigglefest. She literally put the King of the Raspy voice to shame! (seriously.. there is no way to put it... I've never laughed through a sex scene like I did with this book - every mention of the word "her" sounded like a pained evil monster about to attack a fluffy bunny; it was just that out of place). I really recommend listening to the preview before purchasing.

The humour aside, the narration killed what would otherwise have been a very enjoyable romance novel with a strong male and very entertainingly wrought female character.

She was an idiot with no backbone

She was an idiot with no backbone. This book was way different from Garwood’s normal historical romances.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For sure I would. Good balance of action and romance not a drippy romance but a fine accounting of the struggles of strenght and

Would you be willing to try another one of Anne Flosnik’s performances?

no, I really don't like shakesperian read drama, found the reading to be to over done with the extented him(mmm) her-rrrr etc. Detracted from the story line follow.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did it in one sitting twice.

Story OK, Narration annoying

I'm a Julie Garwood fan, but a bad narrator can ruin it. When I purchased this book, I forgot I don't care for this narrator (Anne Flosnik). She is OK I suppose, but has some traits I find really annoying. One, she kind of drags out lots of final words on her sentences. Two, overall, the narration is kind of monotone. It's not literally monotone, but it comes off that way anyway. Not a lot of differentiation between people or emotion as written. LIke her voice stays within a limited range. For example, when the hero "roared" something, it was read as a sort of gruff whisper, which doesn't sound like "roared" to me. I'm not sure I will be able to tolerate listening to the whole book.

I like Rosalyn Landor, who has narrated some other Garwood books. She's much better.

narrator is distracting, story is wonderful

What did you love best about Honor's Splendour?

Strong characters and a compelling setting lay a firm foundation for a good read.

How could the performance have been better?

At the beginning of the book the narrator ends most every sentence with a breathy sigh and continues to repeat unfortunate choice of cadence frequently throughout the book - it distracts repeatedly from the story.

Any additional comments?

The narrator has a good variety of character accents. It seems that she's working so hard on her accents that she looses her ability to vary her cadence and tenor. The story was well written and compelling and I'll look forward to reading 'Garwood's work again.
