Publisher's summary

Deep in the rugged Scottish countryside lies the Highland Targe, an ancient relic that, along with its Guardian, protects the heart of the Highlands.

For centuries, the MacAlpin clan has watched over the Targe, but Lady Elspet, the current Guardian, is gravely ill. Her niece Rowan MacGregor, the rock of the family, is doing everything she can to hold her clan together when she meets Nicholas fitz Hugh.

Handsome and charming, Nicholas quickly joins clan life - yet he is not what he seems. A cunning spy, Nicholas is charged by the king of England with stealing the Targe, part of a plot to break the Scottish rebellion.

Despite his loyalty to the king, Nicholas finds himself falling for beautiful Rowan. When Lady Elspet's health worsens and the guardianship is in question, Nicholas must choose between the king’s will and his own. Can he betray his king and mission? Or will he turn on the woman he loves and the family he has come to care for?

Betrayed by the English Spy!

Here is a nice little tale about trust and how that trust can be betrayed. Nicholas is taken in by the Clan who is lead by Rowan MacGregor, a beautiful redhead. Nicholas is to spy on the Clan for the English King but soon he ends up falling in Love with the beautiful and proud Rowan. A good story that is well told. I needed a book to sleep by, but this didn't do it, I just couldn't lput this down. The love story had it all up's downs, and sideways. Story line even made you cry. Loved it!!!

Overall good story but read all three

Where does Highlander Betrayed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

About the midlevel, it's great for just a mindless read but if you're looking for an epic read this might not be the one unless you're looking for an entire series to read to get resolution.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Highlander Betrayed?

When everything is revealed, it reminds you of the time they're in and the danger for women.

Have you listened to any of Phil Gigante’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to all three books and prefer male readers.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The shield is a full circle.

I could listen to that voice forever!

What did you love best about Highlander Betrayed?

I actually thought the story deserved a 3.5 but that wasn't an option. It was a good story; nothing wrong with it as a whole. It was in my opinion a creative idea, but there wasn't a whole lot of romance. Every now and then I would be asking myself, "hey romance novel, where is the romance?", and then a kiss would happen. But as it was, it kept be entertained, and I definitely think it was worth the money, especially for the length of the book. I didn't give it a higher rating because I wasn't stressing out at work thinking only about the story and how I needed to finish it. For me that is a 5.

Would you be willing to try another book from Laurin Wittig? Why or why not?

I would. I thought it was a good story; it kept me entertained and intrigued.

What does Phil Gigante bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Phil Gigante brought a deep, burly sexy Scottish, Heath Ledger/ Gerard Butler voice to the story! Yummy. This is the third audio book that I have listened to, and it renewed my like for it. The first one was okay....not too bad, but I did not like it when the male narrator went into a female voice. It was awful. The second I couldn't stand the accents. This time, expecting the worst, the higher pitch that Phil Gigante used for females, while granted is not as good as say, a female would be, did not bother me. I thought his accent was great. That man has a great voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

An English spy with no familial ties finds hope in the home of Rowan MacGregor and the MacAlpin Clan; the very people his mission is meant to betray....I don't know if that is a tag line....

A spy in the Highlands? Yes, please!

Not your typical chest-beating, kilt wearing, overbearing romance, BUT it does have all that you'd want out of a fictional visit to the Highlands. Enjoy!

Entertaining

I like that the heroine was strong and driven. I did not like the ending. I like that the authors did not overdo the love scenes. The narrator Gigante was awesome, as usual.

Story was ruined by Narrator.

This is an interesting story destroyed by the narration. The narration for all highland books are crucial.
These highland men are a strong, braw no nonsense type and the lasses fiery beautiful women. Therefore the reader must portray this image. The accent must be Scottish.

I think the very very best reader of a Scottish tale is ...Davina Porter.
She is a pleasure to listen to and can put a different voice to all the characters both male and female.

I know this is book 1 of the series, please change the narrator for the remaining books.

Weak writing and terrible narration

By far the worst acting I have heard since starting books on tape!

Fairly lame dialogue and very predictable.
