Publisher's summary

Phenomenal #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a spine-tingling novel about a female cop who walks fearlessly into danger - but must draw on her courage to let love into her life.

Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara found her calling at an early age when a violently unstable man broke into her family’s home, trapping and terrorizing them for hours. Now she’s Savannah’s top hostage negotiator, who puts her life on the line every day to defuse powder-keg situations.

After watching her talk one of his employees off a roof ledge, Duncan Swift is committed to keeping this intriguing, take-charge woman in his life. Phoebe’s used to working solo, but she’s finding that no amount of negotiation can keep Duncan at arm’s length. Especially when a man throws a hood over Phoebe’s head and brutally assaults her - in her own precinct house - and threatening messages begin appearing on her doorstep. Duncan backs her up every step of the way, as she establishes contact with the faceless tormentor who is determined to make her a hostage to fear - before she becomes the final showdown.

The Very Best

WOW, what a thriller from the beginning to the end.....great story, human characters with such deep feelings about life and love and respect. The narration by my favorite Susan Ericksen brings the story to full circle. She never ceases to amaze me with her abilities to bring a book to life. Many thanks Nora Roberts and Susan Ericksen.

A Candidate for Lifetime

Enjoyable listening yet predictable. For those that enjoy the Lifetime Network this presentation is a shoe-in.

Perfection!

As long as there are no spirits or ghost or 'the light' – I really enjoy Nora Roberts' books. This was a great book and may top the list in the top five of Nora Roberts' best.

Phoebe is an exceptionally interesting character. She is in charge of situations requiring anything from talking someone out of committing suicide to dangerous criminals to hostage takers. She is a hostage negotiator. She is also a daughter and a mother – the 3 of them all live in a house together and are content.

Duncan Swift comes into her life and slowly works his way into hers. It is not an easy task but Swift is unsure if he is able will be able to do it.

Someone is leaving clues, in the form of bodies, for Phoebe to interpret and try to understand. With the help of Swift and a bunch of her coworkers, they find out who and what his or her motives are. This does come very late in the book. What follows is an intricate mind game and keeps the listener wondering how everything will end.

I don't dare say anymore, for fear of spoiling.

Susan Eriksen's narration is very good. She moved seamlessly through all the characters: an eight-year-old girl, a 30 to 40-year-old woman and man, actually several men from the police department as well. As well as the elderly mother and several community members along the way. It is a very nice job.

This book was near perfection and not at all like some of the posture cookie-cutter, romance plot that these authors sometimes fall into – after writing so many books. High Noon is unique, intriguing, emotional and excellent overall.

Notes: Some descriptions of sex, and a bit of violence
Rating: PG-13

I enjoy leaving reviews, as I know that I read them the reviews of others before I purchase a book. If you found my review helpful in your decision about this book, would you please select yes directly below this paragraph? Thank you so much.

Please consider "following me" here on Audible.com. I purchased a lot of books by authors that I am faithful to. I also have the opportunity to review books in all genres, many that I would not pick up on my own. I have been pleasantly surprised by new authors and narrators. Thanks!

Great mystery for a “romance” writer

This story had most of what NR is good at except no Celtic mythology. Great job of keeping the identity of the bad guy hidden but hinted at. A whole new perspective, hostage negotiations for a surprise. Great listen!
