Publisher's Summary

Two strangers...

Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stranded in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call, the pin-striped accountant catches only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights go out.

Four hours...

Caden Grayson is amused when a harried redhead dashes into his elevator fumbling her bags and cell phone. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.

One pitch-black elevator...

To fight fear, they must reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

    "So Sexy but Too Short"

Too short but a very enjoyable ride. This is really more of a novella about a couple who meet in unusual circumstances and, as a result of being forced together, end of hitting it off very, very well. As a result, they take the relationship to the next level. They don’t waste any time. But when it works, it works. We really get only a peek at the start of their relationship; the rest has to be imagined. That’s part of what’s enjoyable about the book b/c life rarely wraps up so nicely like so many romance stories end. So it all seems quite plausible though quite uncommon. But it’s a dream many of us would love to come true. I also liked that the h and H are physically and emotionally flawed people yet still very appealing to one another. Both just seemed real, relatable, which added to the plausibility of the story. An added plus was the wittiness in the early dialogue between the H and h.
The ending, or parts of it, was the only aspect that took away from the story for me. Near the end, there was a bit of side-chair psychology that was supposed to be a wow moment; it didn’t work for me. Unlike the rest of the story, it seemed less plausible and didn’t fit; it seemed forced, like a way to point to the couple’s connection. But it came off as false, which then could’ve made the whole relationship seem shallow and only based on lust, with no substance. But I wanted to believe there was more there, so I let it slide. You have to listen to decide for yourself what you think of the rest of the ending…if you can call it that.

    "Short, but Oh So Sweet!!"

I with this one was longer, or there were a second installment. Both main characters struggle with their self confidence, and the dark elevator they get stuck in allows them to see each other of who they really are. You can't help but fall for Caden and root for the relationship with Makenna. If you are looking for something short, this is a quick listen and very engaging. I recommend it for all romance fans. It is a good solid contemporary romance with good dialogue and character development.

    "Quick sweet & steamy listen"

This was a sweet and steamy listen about two strangers meeting in an elevator.

Both characters were likable and believable.

Narrator was really good and kind of reminded me of Renée Raudman.

I'm be checking out more from Laura Kaye and the narrator, Erin Jones.

    "A Dragon in the Dark"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

good, fast pace listen with a HEA. Author had a great outline and kept the dialogue very one on one, so you do not miss the normal 5 hrs balance of a listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

our heroine, as she was not judgmental when she realized our Dragon had metal

What about Erin Jones’s performance did you like?

good voice and nice pace. She reminds me of another reader, but I can not put my ear to it. With so many of these readers with AKA listing, I would have to go back to other recordings to figure it out.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    when they play 20 questions

    Any additional comments?

this is a better reader than reader in As Hard as it Gets from this author.

"If I could give it more stars I would."
If you could sum up Hearts in Darkness in three words, what would they be?

    Short. Sweet. Satisfying.

What other book might you compare Hearts in Darkness to and why?

I've never read anything like this. Unique concept.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The first time she calms him down with her touch.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I chuckled a couple of times. My "extreme" reaction would have to be that it just made me happy.

    Any additional comments?

I love long books, like The Stand (almost 50 hours!), but I really liked a couple of Laura Kaye's other books so when I read about this one, I had to try it. So glad I did. I don't know how she was able to to develop her characters so well in such a short amount of time. A master!

"Great short romance. I love the couple! :D"

    5 stars!

This was a great story! I loved both Makenna and Caden and completely enjoyed their story. I've read a few other books by this author (books #1 & 2 for the Hard Ink series) and I've liked the previous book I've read by her but this one beat them both. I think I've just found another addition to my favorites list. :D

Makenna is a forensic accountant and is a sweet and down to earth woman. She has a dad and 3 brothers that she loves but lost her mother at a very early age. This upbringing (regardless of an Aunt being there for her) meant that Makenna grew up a bit of a tomboy (although she did find her feminine side in college). I really liked Makenna as she's very honest and straightforward while still being warm and caring. Unfortunately, Makenna is having a horrible day when the story begins and the one bright spot is a good Samaritan holding the elevator door for her as she's running to catch it.

Caden is a EMT that works for a local fire station. He's tattooed and pierced and tends not to let many people get very close. He's actually a very nice guy though but tends to keep people at a distance instead of letting them close where they can hurt him. Caden suffered a big loss when he was 14 years old and it marked him strongly. He's managed to be content in his life but never really happy. Caden isn't really having a good day either and since he's claustrophobic (especially when combined with pitch blackness) his day gets significantly worse when the elevator breaks down and all power is lost leaving everything black.

When Makenna is rushing for the elevator, she doesn't see much of Caden except the hand he's using to hold the door for her (which has a dragon tattoo on it). Since she's just broken her cell phone and is in the process of messing with it as she boards the elevator, Caden doesn't see much of Makenna except for her long red hair and a cute butt under her skirt. Almost immediately, the elevator stops and loses all power as it goes pitch black. Caden is trying to keep from freaking out and finds that Makenna helps when she talks to him. He confides his claustrophobia to her and Makenna is willing to help out by talking to him. They start a back and forth questioning of each other that goes from the most basic info (like favorite color & music) to (eventually) more personal info (details about their first times). They also share some personal info about their pasts (tragedy type stuff) that makes them feel even closer to each other. I really liked the way their relationship is built. They're strangers but yet in the intimacy of the hours spent together in darkness talking and sharing with each other, they become a lot more than that. There's some heavy petting while they're trapped but it's after they get out that the attraction between them explodes. Overall, the story took place over less than 12 hours but it felt like they had something solid to begin with as the story ended because it's obvious that they're starting to fall for each other and that they're both very intent on continuing their relationship long term. So HFN or HEA...I'm not sure which it would be considered but it definitely ends happily and satisfyingly. :D

I loved this story. Makenna and Caden are both great characters. Makenna is warm and straightforward and Caden is a strong (if rather scared) man that has a definite soft spot for Makenna. Caden is one of those men that you just know could be perfect with the right woman and you just wish you're that woman. Luckily for Makenna she's his. :) I'd recommend this book. 2 thumbs way up! :D

Would you consider the audio edition of Hearts in Darkness to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the book yet but I have it in library

What other book might you compare Hearts in Darkness to and why?

The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair... I only wish it too was on audible

What does Erin Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm not sure if she adds anything, to be honest even as she read the novel I could picture the voices different
