Heart of Fire | [Linda Howard]

Heart of Fire

A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it - even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man - over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face.

Publisher's Summary

A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it - even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man - over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face.

Jillian watched him come to a fast boil when she refused to reveal their exact destination upriver in the uncharted rain forests - and resolved to stand her ground. Neither of them could foresee what the days ahead promised: an odyssey into the fiery heart of passion and betrayal, and a danger that would force them to cast their fates together, immersed in the eternal, unsolved mysteries of love....

    "Really good book!"

This book had a great story and plenty of heat! Linda Howard really delivers on this one, especially since this is one of her earlier works. Very entertaining!

    "Enjoyed the story"

This book ended up being better than I expected. The story was interesting and the chemistry between Ben and Julia was good. Not the best narrator but not the worst. Story = 5 stars, narrator = 3 stars, so average is 4. I like Linda Howard books and if you do too then you will enjoy this story. Excellent writing of the Amazon jungle, you could really picture it in your mind. The description of the Stone City made you wish you could visit to see it. Ending was better than most (not so sappy).

    "good times."

I rather enjoyed this story. It was predictable in places, but that didn't get in my way of enjoying it. It reminded me of Romancing the Stone- just a sort of romantic adventure. The characters were pretty fun. Some of them were pretty one- dimensional, some were more deep.

The narrator kind of bugged me. She read it fine, but the way she pronounced some words (and the Latino names) kind of made me giggle-- and it wasn't supposed to be funny. So, 3 stars for her. But, her reading didn't detract from the story for me.

    "what? What?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It started out promising.....then downhill. To be fair, I couldn't even finish the book. When What'shisname, was named for wanting sex right off the bat, The die was cast.

To make it better, Just lead up to the guy being a womanizer. Sorry, I cant' even remember the characters except she is the daughter of a archeologist, and he was a guide through the amazon. She knows she wants him but all the cat and mouse love scenes got on my nerves. I may go back to the book , but when? I don't know.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Sylvia Day's books. Now, I love Linda Howard but I don't know what's happening to her Stories.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    She was ok

What character would you cut from Heart of Fire?

    The lead guy and girl

    Any additional comments?

Linda? Finish your series of Blood born and get a grip

    "Lame"

Honestly the narrator's voice was so distracting that I couldn't get through the book. The lead male character sounded like whiny teenager and I found myself completely unable to get into the story. Bummer since I just finished listening to After the Night by Linda Howard before this. I loved that book and was hoping for another L.Howard "can't put down" audible listen.

    "Unpleasant."

First of all, the narrator has an annoying lisp.
As for the story itself...predictable, boring, not good at all. Absolutely nothing, and I do mean nothing, happens until the very end of the book. The rest is just the main female character whining and getting injured and getting massages from the main male character, who is a stereotypical invincible robot, meaning he is omnipotent and can not get injured under any circumstances. The romance is frankly ridiculous. Why would these to love each other? They wouldn't.

After hours and hours of nothing at all happening, the only action we get is a good 80 percent of the characters getting systematically slaughtered. Then some nice hot sex after watching said slaughter (ahh, how romantic).

No, no, no. This is not romance. I wish I could un-read this drivel.

    "A RARE 5-STAR"

Out of 29 audio books, this is the one I enjoyed the most. The narrator had a small s-lisp that occurred occasionally and surprised me out of the story now-and-then, but it was nothing like her nerve-racking performance of Nora Robert's THE SEARCH. The story itself was extremely entertaining, the characters were very likable, and the romance was believable. I actually listened to this one twice.

    "Adventure in the Jungle!"
What did you love best about Heart of Fire?

This was a fun ride, similar to Romancing the Stone. I enjoyed the adventure and settings.

    Story
"I resisted buying this but I am SO GLAD I got it."
Would you listen to Heart of Fire again? Why?

Yes, the reviews I read were mixed and I was thinking it would be a so-so. Some spots did drag, but I find that with almost all of Howard's books. Overall I was very pleased with it.

What does Tanya Eby Sirois bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to a few of her books and found her to a an average narrator, but this one was perfect for her. Every voice was faultless.

    Any additional comments?

There was something that is in most Howard's books, besides dragging, is the the ending; it completes the story but is done so fast, I like more details...of course I never want a good book the end, so that may be why I find them wrapped up so fast.

Linda Howard is good at storytelling! I love her stories - all of'em. This story was thought provoking and easy to follow. Really a good read.
