I have been happily married for 17 years, I have 3 children (12, 14, & 16), and 2 dogs. I am currently working on a 2nd degree. Life is chaotic and stressful, but I wouldn't change it. I am blessed and enjoying my life.

    "Decent listen, but not great"

I agree with the other listens that said it was off and on. Some parts where very slow. I think the book could have moved a little faster, it seemed to drag a little. But still a decent story overall. On the slow parts I found my self concentrating on the narrator and realized that some of the voices bordered on baby voices, which is not good for supposedly grown women. I may give book two a try, not sure yet.

I purchased all three books in this series because they were on sale and I needed a few books to listen to while waiting for a couple of books to be released from series I've already been listening to. I really wasn't sure if it would be that good, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm looking forward to listening to the next two books...

Listening to books is the best. I love almost all genres, but romance is my favorite, and rom-com is my preference there.

    "Not so much"

    Setting: New Orleans, contemporary
    Genre: Paranormal romance
Narration: Fair. Traci Odom is not the kind of narrator I would look up to see what else she had narrated, nor would I pass on a book narrated by her. I started this book on Kindle, so her accents weren't as I had imagined them.
This is the first book in a series. I had more hope for this than what I got. The plot is about a woman, Jade, who moved to N.O at the behest of her best friend, Kat, then finds out that her ex-boyfriend, Dan, also lives there and is dating her friend. Wait. Isn't it kind of a cardinal rule that you don't pick up your best friend's leavings? Plus, if your best friend told you the ex was psycho, wouldn't you believe it? Anyway, the backstory on these 3 comes out in such an incomplete and scattered way, I felt like this was actually the 2nd book of the series. Maybe this series is connected in some way to a different series? Neither the blurb from Audible or Kindle indicated it is. Aside from that weird backstory thing, there were other problems with the plot and characters. There was a character introduced who became a good friend of the whole group instantly without anything showing the growth of the relationship. Jade gets all ticked off at Kane for not revealing his paranormal power to her, but she won't reveal hers to him. What an immature little snot. One of the other things that bothered me about backstory and character is that ages aren't given (at least as far as I remember). The apparent prejudice Jade has against Kane for owning a strip club. This lacks some sort of background story. She reveals that Pyper is part owner or manager or something to do with the club, but Jade doesn't seem to have the same prejudice with her. And yes, I am spelling Kane and Pyper correctly, as they appear in the Kindle. Aren't those spellings precious? Oh yeah, Jade gets injured so many times as plot device, I felt like she should have been wearing protective head gear. So.... I can handle some grammatical problems, because I just edit in my head as I go along, but the lack of backstory, communication between characters, and continuity made this torturous.
Was this worth a credit? NO! It wasn't even worth the $1.99 I paid. You can get it if it's a freebie. Was it worth whatever I paid for the Kindle (under $2.00)? That would also be a no. You can add an exclamation point to that. I'm trying to limit my use.
So, why did I give it 2 stars? Because it is just rude to give fewer to something the author spent time doing. Plus, I liked that it was set in New Orleans.

I've been avid about audiobooks since my mom put a big ol' vinyl "Peter and the Wolf" on the record player, so this website is ambrosia.

"Fun and interesting series by an author new to me"

This is book 1 of a series and it starts out the series fairly lighthearted, although of course there has to be a "villain" or there can't be heroes/heroines. The first story provides resolution to a problem and yet leaves you wanting to continue with more content about the characters (won't say more or there would be spoilers).

I enjoyed all the main characters, and they were each interesting and unique enough that I could keep them separate in my head while I listened. If you've listened to a book with all "vanilla" characters you may know what I mean.

The narrator is fine, although not so skilled that I will specifically seek out other material for which she is the narrator. Most of the characters have an identifiable voice that can be distinguished from the others, so I consider her competent and solidly in the middle of the skill range of various narrators to whom I have listened.

I am listening to the second book now and enjoy this author; Deanna Chase's work was new to me with this book.

"Great new author and book from the Crescent City"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The book is a fresh change from recent publications. It touches on the metaphysical and the current.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The heroin. Her character development was real.

What does Traci Odom bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    A wonderful dramatization.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Witches, Angels, and Demons in the Crescent City. A modern day battle between good and evil. A resurrection of the eternal battle between God and Satan.

    "Pass on this one"

Slow to start. I could not connect with the characters and it was not worth the time I put in to listen.

Jade, the main character, veered between being likeable and sympathetic to occasionally irritating for me,I found myself rolling my eyes at her.

I found that I had to re-read/listen to the same part because I would put it down and forget what happened. If this is given away for a penny, wait until it is free.

What did you love best about Haunted on Bourbon Street?

The book captured your interest from the beginning.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I never have enough time for an all-in-one-sitting read/listen, but it could capture your interest for that period of time.

    Any additional comments?

Engaging and interesting paranormal story. Great character development and just a fun read. One of the tests of this type of story is when an author can have romantic interests that are hot without having to get too graphic with sex scenes. That takes much more talent and story telling capabilities. After all, we are adults and know what goes on behind closed doors.

By the way, purchased this as an e-book for my Kindle and then the Audible version for Whispersync. This feature is fantastic. I can listen to the audible version when commuting in my car or working around my house, but can switch back and forth to enjoy on my Kindle anytime, anywhere, and enjoy a nice quiet read.

    "Hauntingly interesting"

An easy-listening book with some nice characters and a few ghosts. Jade rents an apartment that turns out to be haunted. She's also drawn to the landlord. The main characters were very likeable and a pretty good love story developing. Parts of it dragged with more action towards the end.

The narrator was about half and half on the voices. Some of the women seemed to have baby voices. The male voices were so-so.

I can't write a short review to save myself! Authors put a lot of effort in their books, so a 3 line review can't do justice to my thoughts

    "Haunted... just not quite there"

It's never fair coming down off a truly fabulous read onto a new author and new series. Leaping from well developed characters and an intimate knowledge of the story-verse into unfamiliar territory is always going to take some time, and often make you feel disappointed in the new novel so I'm trying to pull my punch on this review a little knowing that I'm ja bit jaded (no pun intended!) at this point in time.

I feel that as a first novel this series has potential, and I will probably get the next book in the series when I have a spare credit lying around, to see if my suspicions are correct. And also to see if my apathy for the book is just "new series" syndrome.

In a market saturated with vampires, a novel with ghosts at least adds a different plethora of paranormal jargon to learn. Unfortunately I didn't really engage with many of the characters much, the lead was the weakest of them all - I felt that if the novel had been from the point of view of her new best friend it might have had more umph.

The narrator, Traci Odom, was mostly quite good, although some of her pronunciations bothered and distracted me a bit. (why do I do that? Fixate on a word they say wrong/weird, and then miss half the next sentence???). I also struggled with some of her more manly vocalisations, but overall enjoyed her performance and portrayal of the majority of the characters.

In summary, if you're looking for a light-hearted low-calorie read, this fits the bill. However, if you're looking for action and a gripping story line to drag you from book to book as fast as you can buy and download them, then perhaps try Kim Harrison (Rachel Morgan series - witch/vampire/fairy/demons), Jeaniene Frost (Cat Crawfield series - vampire/vampire hunter), Diana Rowland (Kara Gillian series - demons) or Kevin Hearne (Atticus O'Sullivan Iron Druid series - druid/faerie/witch/vampire/werewolf) for other options in the paranormal genre.
