Jade loves her new apartment - until a ghost joins her in the shower.
When empath Jade Calhoun moves into an apartment above a strip bar on Bourbon Street, she expects life to get interesting. What she doesn't count on is making friends with an exotic dancer, attracting a powerful spirit, and developing feelings for Kane, her sexy landlord.
Being an empath has never been easy on Jade's relationships. It's no wonder she keeps her gift a secret. But when the ghost moves from spooking Jade to terrorizing Pyper, the dancer, it's up to Jade to use her unique ability to save her. Except she'll need Kane's help - and he's betrayed her with a secret of his own - to do it. Can she find a way to trust him and herself before Pyper is lost?

I have been happily married for 17 years, I have 3 children (12, 14, & 16), and 2 dogs. I am currently working on a 2nd degree. Life is chaotic and stressful, but I wouldn't change it. I am blessed and enjoying my life.
I agree with the other listens that said it was off and on. Some parts where very slow. I think the book could have moved a little faster, it seemed to drag a little. But still a decent story overall. On the slow parts I found my self concentrating on the narrator and realized that some of the voices bordered on baby voices, which is not good for supposedly grown women. I may give book two a try, not sure yet.
I enjoy historical, paranormal, and contemporary romance. Also steampunk, sci-fi, fantasy, suspense, and fiction. I'm open to about anything
Setting: New Orleans, contemporary
Genre: Paranormal romance
Narration: Fair. Traci Odom is not the kind of narrator I would look up to see what else she had narrated, nor would I pass on a book narrated by her. I started this book on Kindle, so her accents weren't as I had imagined them.
This is the first book in a series. I had more hope for this than what I got. The plot is about a woman, Jade, who moved to N.O at the behest of her best friend, Kat, then finds out that her ex-boyfriend, Dan, also lives there and is dating her friend. Wait. Isn't it kind of a cardinal rule that you don't pick up your best friend's leavings? Plus, if your best friend told you the ex was psycho, wouldn't you believe it? Anyway, the backstory on these 3 comes out in such an incomplete and scattered way, I felt like this was actually the 2nd book of the series. Maybe this series is connected in some way to a different series? Neither the blurb from Audible or Kindle indicated it is. Aside from that weird backstory thing, there were other problems with the plot and characters. There was a character introduced who became a good friend of the whole group instantly without anything showing the growth of the relationship. Jade gets all ticked off at Kane for not revealing his paranormal power to her, but she won't reveal hers to him. What an immature little snot. One of the other things that bothered me about backstory and character is that ages aren't given (at least as far as I remember). The apparent prejudice Jade has against Kane for owning a strip club. This lacks some sort of background story. She reveals that Pyper is part owner or manager or something to do with the club, but Jade doesn't seem to have the same prejudice with her. And yes, I am spelling Kane and Pyper correctly, as they appear in the Kindle. Aren't those spellings precious? Oh yeah, Jade gets injured so many times as plot device, I felt like she should have been wearing protective head gear. So.... I can handle some grammatical problems, because I just edit in my head as I go along, but the lack of backstory, communication between characters, and continuity made this torturous.
Was this worth a credit? NO! It wasn't even worth the $1.99 I paid. You can get it if it's a freebie. Was it worth whatever I paid for the Kindle (under $2.00)? That would also be a no. You can add an exclamation point to that. I'm trying to limit my use.
So, why did I give it 2 stars? Because it is just rude to give fewer to something the author spent time doing. Plus, I liked that it was set in New Orleans.
I've loved Sci Fi and Fantasy since I was a teenager, too many years ago! I have been gaming just as long and currently run in a DragonQuest system. I've been married 35 yrs. with 2 kids, 4 cats and a moose in training - a LARGE Dog. I found audible a few years ago and I LOVE it!!!
I was looking for something light and humorous after reading Molly Harper, this wasn't even close.
I purchased all three books in this series because they were on sale and I needed a few books to listen to while waiting for a couple of books to be released from series I've already been listening to. I really wasn't sure if it would be that good, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm looking forward to listening to the next two books...
Slow to start. I could not connect with the characters and it was not worth the time I put in to listen.
Jade, the main character, veered between being likeable and sympathetic to occasionally irritating for me,I found myself rolling my eyes at her.
I found that I had to re-read/listen to the same part because I would put it down and forget what happened. If this is given away for a penny, wait until it is free.
Engaging; alluring; sexy
Jade, definitely! She was a complex, yet realistic character.
Her voice was easy to listen to and her representation of the characters were terrific.
Neither, but it was entertaining.
This is a Top Rated Audio Book in my opinion.I Love Deanna Chase's storytelling.
I Loved Jade and Kane as well as Ghost dog.
I would have to say Jade.
I Loved the scene with the Honey Dust. It was sexy and fun.
I love books with a paranormal theme with a touch of romance and mystery and this book has it all. It's a fast pace page turner that keeps you wanting more. I just can't wait to read the next one.
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
The book was just okay. It goes through the motions, but it was kinda forgettable. There just wasn't any pop to the story and I didn't really like the main characters. They were just okay. Plus Jade was such a hypocrite, she was my least favorite character. She thought everybody had to tell her their secrets, but in no way shared hers. She then got all "holier than thou" attitude that almost made me stop listening it was so annoying. I also thought she was super prejudice about what people did for a living, she does eventually get over this. I got this through Whispersync with it being free on Amazon Kindle and only 1.99 on Audible it was worth 2 bucks but I wouldn't spend a credit on it. I won't be reading anymore in this series. Narrator was passable but was a bit tinny sounding.
This book was not as I expected, it was more like Charmed (the television series) although where the action is over in a minute or so with visual, this just went on and on. Also, for the first in the series, the reader/listener doesn't really get to know who they are.
Your mileage may vary
This is book 1 of a series and it starts out the series fairly lighthearted, although of course there has to be a "villain" or there can't be heroes/heroines. The first story provides resolution to a problem and yet leaves you wanting to continue with more content about the characters (won't say more or there would be spoilers).
I enjoyed all the main characters, and they were each interesting and unique enough that I could keep them separate in my head while I listened. If you've listened to a book with all "vanilla" characters you may know what I mean.
The narrator is fine, although not so skilled that I will specifically seek out other material for which she is the narrator. Most of the characters have an identifiable voice that can be distinguished from the others, so I consider her competent and solidly in the middle of the skill range of various narrators to whom I have listened.
I am listening to the second book now and enjoy this author; Deanna Chase's work was new to me with this book.
