Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unlikely partnership.
In exchange for help finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner…are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon, Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side...and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.
Jeaniene Frost lives with her husband and their very spoiled dog in Florida. Although not a vampire herself, she confesses to having pale skin, wearing a lot of black, and sleeping in late whenever possible. And while she can't see ghosts, she loves to walk through old cemeteries. Jeaniene also loves poetry and animals but fears children and hates to cook. She is currently at work on the next novel in her best-selling Night Huntress series.

“Take one half-human/half-vampire female with serious anger and parental issues, add in a sexy ancient vampire with his own agenda, and you have the makings for a truly combustible series. Sign me up for the sequel!” (Romantic Times)
Almost a year ago, I had amassed credits on my account and found a few books to use them up and close my account. One of them was the first book in this series. My 17-year old daughter and I listened to that book late this summer while traveling and I had to rejoin Audible just to get the entire series. The sex scenes can be a bit much, but that would be my only complaint. This series is addictive. We blasted through 5 books in a few weeks and were anxiously awaiting the next credits.
The story: The characters are believable and engaging. They are dynamic. The plots are interesting and fast-moving with just enough twists to keep a sharp mind attentive. The sex scenes are believable and fairly graphic (for my 17-year old, but we openly discuss such things so I was okay with it.) One big caveat: Go to her website to get the reading order. I believe that after book 3, you need to switch to the "Night Huntress World" series before reading books 4 and 5. Double check that, I'm going from memory.
The performance: The reader was FANTASTIC. She really brought the characters to life. She made the action scenes and scenes with emotion really shine. I've since gone looking for other things that she reads.
If another installment of this series came available, it would jump to the top of my wish list.
Halfway to the Grave is delicious! The Best of the Genre! 10 stars! A+
I am 30 and I write this review for anyone who might think this is young adult nonsense:
Personal Disclaimer: Im new to the genre. I snubbed my nose to it bc of the pop culture craze of Twilight, and a strict loyalty to the Vampire world of Ann Rice. Somehow, I stumbled into the paranormal/time travel genre with Karen 's Fever series, and then finally read Outlander. After dabbling in a few JD Ward books, "The Night Huntress" series was recommended to me and I downloaded this book. I was judgmental of the cover and the silly name, and it just sat in my audible library for months. After listening to a heavy depressing book, I needed a break and put this on...
I LOVE this book. I'm addicted and in love with these characters. Bones is surprisingly funny and charming but very different from the smoldering alpha males in every other romance novel I've read. Cat is my favorite heroine since Scarlet O'hara! This book is so different from any other "vampire" or paranormal book I've ever read. It's funny, sexy, and completely engaging.
But to my amazement, it also contains one of the hottest love scenes ever written, not because of any graphic sex, but because of the chemistry and tenderness of the two characters. I was surprised by how sexy this book was. And the author doesn't play the same old games of delaying the "good parts" till the end, which is frustrating and gets old pretty quick! (I waited 5 books for Moning's characters to finally hook up.. And still resent the frustration i felt) Instead Jeaniene Frost uses the integrity of her writing to create sizzling chemistry and true emotion between this unlikely couple.
The story itself is intriguing and unfolds as a suspense filled battle with the reader just as interested in the plot as in the characters love life. What a true gift of a book.
Finally, I must say a narrator makes or breaks an audio book. In this case, Tavia Gilbert is AMAZING! I want her to read every book I have. Her character voices are wonderful, and she brings this to life better than any actor could on a movie screen.
This book has it all! And I plan to devour every book by this author!
Okay, I listened to the entire series within 2 weeks, so I'm only commenting on the first book and I will separately comments on book 6 (only because I had something specific to say about the last book).
This whole series is amazing!!!
Like other commenters have said, the author keeps the story moving so there are no lulls of boredom and only constant action. It's also very, very sexy, so brace yourself!
At first, I had a major issue with the main male character, Bones', accent (harsh British, not the sexy British accent of James Bond or someone else), but by the end of book 1, and definitely by the book 2, I found myself looking forward to hearing from Bones. (I die every time he calls her by her 'pet' name.)
The relationship between Cat and Bones is EPIC throughout the series. I love this couple! They are INTENSE!
I also have to give it up to the narrator, Tavia Gilbert. As you move through this series, she only gets better and better. Her ability to convincingly narrate the several voices and accents of the many characters is flawless. She can say a line without even telling you who is speaking and you know which characters are conversing. She is also the only narrator I've experienced who sounds like she's acting out the scene physically. Not so much in the first couple of books, but definitely by the last couple of books, she sounds like she's taking blows in the fights scenes as well as dishing them out. I really have to give this narrator props.
Books 1-4 are my favs. I felt like books 5 and 6 went a little stray (not to mention I hadn't realized two spin-offs were written about side characters which then feed into book 6 - - so I was a little confused about sudden new details in book 6 that I hadn't experienced since I didn't read the spin-offs). Despite the spin-offs, the author does catch you up on what happend briefly, but it felt odd not to read and experience the major events myself.
I'm looking forward to book 7 though. Book 6 definitely set up what the focus of book 7 will be...
I loved pretty much everything about this story but I almost didn't get through the first few chapters...
Bones' character seems to have been strongly influnced by "Spike" from Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (which for me is a good thing!) However, despite Tavia Gilberts stellar overall performance and excellent portrayal of all the other characters, her accent for Bones was TERRIBLE. Being british I'm perhaps more sensitive than others but her cockney accent was totally not sexy, inconsistent and quite frankly all over the place. It was almost a deal breaker for me during the first few chapters. I'm glad I continued listening though, because after a couple of hours her Bones voice didn't bother me quite so much, and I was able to settle in and truly enjoy the story.
I'm proud to be a bookaholic...addicted, obsessed, passionate!!! My favorite way to relax & escape reality....
I love Cat & Bones! If your looking for a awesome Paranormal Romance Series than you MUST buy the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost.
I am addicted to audio books, mostly fantasy. I have alwayz loved to read but could never find the time. This way I keep my mind occupied with wonderful stories and don't get caught up in life's stresses. I'm so glad I found this site.
I really liked this book! I can't wait to read more of the series! Bones is one sexy character, I love the British accent! It was a bit slow at the beginning but once you get into it it really picks up!
This was a heck of a fun read. This book introduces Catherine Crawfield, a half-vampire Vampire hunter. While sometimes the vampire thing seems a bit played out, Cat is an interesting twist. The whole vampire mythology is pretty much mainline (super strength, ability to confuse minds, super-healing, and of course the whole blood sucking thing. The devil in these stories is in the details, like the fact that Vamp's are only susceptible to silver and wither away when killed.) the idea of the halfbreed is more open to interpretation.
Cat is the product of a vampire rape (which apparently has to occur in the short period of a less than a week from being turned) who is raised by her mother. At 16 she finally told how she came to being and is put on the path to staking every vampire she can get her hands on. The story finds us joining her at age 22, with quite a collection of vampires laying around her grandparents farm. Everything was going well until she picks up her next victim, Bones.
We learn more about Bones and his particular quest and, as so often happens in these sorts of tales, eventually there develops a romantic interest. Luckily the seemingly required erotic bits are short and not too painful to listen to.
The events in the story quickly escalate and are well written. But the jewel of the story is Cat, quippy and fun to listen to (ala Buffy), which ensures that I will be taking on the next book shortly.
It is hard to get excited about a main character who, although she is physically strong and a well trained fighter, is emotionally weak and not very intelligent. The book is written in such a manner that it is extremely obvious where the plot is going, but the character is very naïve and has not a clue as to what is going on and has the emotional responses of a teenager. She does not catch on to simple things a typical 14 year old would understand. It is hard to get excited about a character like that, I was disappointed.
PNR is my prefered genre, but I also enjoy any lighthearted, funny, steamy stories. Listening to books helps me to do mindless housework.
I so throughly enjoyed this story that (after being dissapointed the other books in the series weren't on audio), I went out and purchased the remaining 3 books and read ALL within 4 days - completely unherd of for me! (I had to go to 3 book stores to find them, the sales staff @ ea. store said they were VERY popular).
I felt the book was very well written, the charaters are well devloped and the story flowed and concluded well, leaving you hungry for more.
These books were a great blend of action, mystery, romance, sex, and the supernatural(mainly in the form of vampires).
There was alot of violence, but not overly done, & some profanity, so heads up if you're sensitive to this kind of material. But unlike many supernatural stories I didn't find this spiturally disturbing.
Another thing I appreciated was that the author doesn't dissapoint when it comes to the passionate intimacy Cat and Bones share (unlike Twlight which I LOVED but left me high and dry in that dept.). If you get to the 3rd book there's a great inclusion of Vlad Tepes (AKA Dracula) into the story.
I mention the other books in the series as a testament as to how enjoyable the story was, and as a warning as to how addictive they are!
Narrator did a wonderful job w/ her British accent of Bones.
I am writing this review of the first book in the series after I have read all that Frost has written. Actually there are two series - Night Huntress and Night Huntress World that should be read in combination (Books 1-4 in Night Huntress, then Books 1 and 2 in Night Huntress World, and then back to Books 5 and 6 in Night Huntress.
The main character, Cat, is the coolest and she is tough. Cat is half vampire and half human (the only one in existance). I really love her and feel as if she is real. The main male character is named Bones. He is a vampire and is drop dead georgeous - he is super bad too. The dialogue in the book is snappy and funny. The action is fast paced and the interaction of the characters is fascinating. You are also introduced to Ghouls in this book. Even though this is a series, the book does come to a wrapped up conclusion. It does not leave you hanging, but leaves you wanting to know more about what happens to Cat.
Her mother grated on my nerves, but after the sixth or seventh book in the series, I have become to like her better (but she is still a major B...). I love Bones, but I do not like the voice the narrator has given to him. He really deserves a more suave and sexy voice rather than the broad cockney accent, but after two or three books in the series (Yes, he does reappear), I got over his accent and have come to think of it as Bones voice . The way he call Cat "Kitten" can make you shiver.
The sex scenes are pretty vivid, and, even though I don't usually like too much sex, I found them to fit the story and did not object. Cat and Bones are HOT.
In my opinion, this is the best of all the vampire series and you won't be dissapointed by the author or the narrator (except maybe for her "Bones" accent).
I very seldom give 5 stars (except for extraordinarily excellent books) and I give this a very solid 4 in all categories.
I actually enjoyed the storyline of Halfway to the Grave and would recommend it as a read but I found that the dreadful English Mockney accent Tavia Gilbert adopted for Bones just spoiled my whole listening experience - if only she'd stuck to her normal accent, the whole thing would have been much more enjoyable. Regrettably I won't be downloading the follow-ups because of this.
"A wild ride"
This book has everything: laugh out loud moments, action, romance, great characters and a fast-moving tight plot which makes it impossible to put down. The hero alone is worth reading the story to the end and the first person narrative is strong. The heroine borders on the psychotic and I can't say I exactly like her. In places, the violence was a bit graphic for my taste too. Despite this, I must confess I can't wait to read the others in the series, so here's hoping Audible gets the rest of them.
"OMG - If you cant do an English Accent - Don't Try"
This story is great, I'm still evaluating the vampire story line but first impressions is that it's great.
The thing that really raped my ears was the really really awful english accent, really awful!
Think the story has a lot of promise, but OMG - the accent. We're not all cockneys and even the ones that are don't sound like THAT!
Americans my find the pseudo cockney accent charming, but any English people out there will wince.
"Loved it when I read it but the accent!"
I have actually read all the Night Huntress books before I listened to this, so I knew I would love the story but I like to listen to audiobooks through out the day. This is book 1 in the series and a brilliant introduction to this fast-paced, fun and sexy world. The combination of fantasy, humour and action is a winning one if you're a fan of the genre (Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance). I have given this 4 stars simply for the reason that I got so irratated with the accent the narrator had given Bones! I always imagined it more Spike from Buffy than Artful Dodger from Olive!. Unfortunately the accent contiunes throughout the series on audio (appreciate they couldn't change the accent after the first, especially with the same narrator.) It does some what spoill the character, which really is a shame.
All in all this is a fantastic story and continues on into equally fantastic series. Worth a listen if you're a fan of Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris etc.
"Let down by narration"
I agree with the reviewer that commented on the 'English' accent the narrator adopted for Bones. It was completely wrong and devoid of any sort of emotional variations so made the story very one sided. A real shame as the remaining narration was good. I will try Book 2 but if the accent continues, that will be it!!
"Love the story but..........."
I've read the books and loved the story but i had to stop listening to the audio version because of the dreadful Brisih accent, I won't be buying the follow up books because of this.
"Awful just don't bother"
The main character was just dumb, you the reader could see what was going to happen coming a mile off, None of the characters were at all likable, and its a story thats been done better a million times.
Made the heroine smarter and not made it so obvious to the reader what was happening.
Someone that didn't feel the need to do such awful accents!
The drink spiking, so clumsy and idiotic, also a few of the mother telling her she's evil scenes.
Probably the first audio book I've listened to where I'm shouting cop on to the characters.
"A halfling is not always a hobbit!"
Vampires Revenge Romance
I enjoyed the main person, Cat/Cathy/Catherine/Kitten. I like how she ticks. I hate, hate, hate her mother! I kept hoping a vampire would finish her off.
No. Like other reviewers said, her 'British English' is bad. I did not think it would be as bad as it was. I have not read the books so I can't
When two boys chat up Cat in the bar and the scenes after that, when she realises that there are good and bad people and good and bad vampires and she is starting to make her own mind up and not just follow blindly the hate speech from her mother. I think that is very fitting for our society where racism and religious hate are still very much part of our world.
I did enjoy the book, it was quite a good story and I might get the real books, but won't download another one unless they change the reader. Really, did nobody when recording this book point out that British people speak very very different?
"A rubbish English accent"
Love the book.
Bones .....A guy to fall in love with
Most annoying English accent I have ever heard
My favorite author but badly read which is off putting
"Junk food for the brain"
It's smutty chick-flick with vampires and violence. If you need to switch off your brain, this is a good way of doing it but you'll feel used and bloated afterwards and at some point you'll come back for more.
