    "In the beginning"

I started this series with Narcissus in Chains in the audio version and love the old narrator. She pulled me into these books and made me fall in love with all the characters in them. I do like Jean-Claude’s French accent but HATE his voice. He does not sound sexy, the voice is too feminine it just does not do it for me at all. I MISS the old narrator. I was so looking forward to the first books coming out on audio but was disappointed when I found out who the narrator was going to be she ruined Skin Trade for me and I was hoping that would be the only book she would do. I will still get all of these books in audio because I have them in reg. books. I love the series as it gets farther along but I drive a lot so I need the audio version.
BUT we need these first books to set the foundation to the books that come later. For all you new readers keep going the series is worth it further in. I read and listen to this series a few time a year. It is that good!!!!!

    "GREAT Read"
What made the experience of listening to Guilty Pleasures the most enjoyable?

The story moved along. I listened to Danse Macabre first. I had never ever listened to this author or even liked this type of books or movies(hate scary movies) I found myself laughing like a mad woman in my garage after l arriving home and listened to the first CD.I was hooked. I started searching for the other books online to find out how Anita got involved with a vamp.(Gulity pleasures) I have now check out, downloaded or purchased several of the books in the series.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Guilty Pleasures?

Anita running out of the circus being chased and Jean Claude giving Anita the second mark(eyes)

Which character – as performed by Kimberly Alexis – was your favorite?

    Anita

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No..

    Any additional comments?

Love the series so far. Not to cool on all the sex Anita has, but she kick's butt and I hope learns to control the adure thing I hope Ms Hamilton stays clear of under aged sexual involment with Anita. The 16 yr old boy was a bit over the line.

"Start with this one, and you're hooked"

This is the first of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, series. Once you read or listen to this book, you're hooked on the series. Love the narrative of the book, and the narrator, Kimberly Alexis really does a good job. Anita tells the story, somewhat in a Joe Friday way. Has a lot of action and suspense, with a hint of sexual tension.

"Book 1 in the Anita Blake series"

I so like Kimberly Alexis narrtion better than Cynthia Hollway in the later books, but oh well, a good series, 18 in all, it starts off slow, but ends with a bang...keep listening, their worth it...

    "Narration is just plain awful!!!"

Let me first say, that I love the Anita Blake series as a whole. Though this book is not my favorite book in the series, it's still a really good read. It is, however, the worst audiobook in the series so far.

I completely dislike the narrator change(I can't come up with stronge enough words). She sounds way to macho to be the sexy necromancer, we've always known. She completely ruins Jean Claude's accent. I'm not sure if I want to laugh or cry, because she has ruined something that I hold dear to me.

There also is this awful menacing music that plays randomly through out some scenes. It's really annoying and distracting.

I was happy when I found out that they were releasing the early Anita books in audio format, but this has been a massive let down. I'm pretty sure this will be my last Anita Blake audiobook purchase with this narrator change. Save your credits, but buy the book. You'll be happy you did!

    "I Disagree!!!!"

I love, love, love the new narrator. Jean-Claude has an actual French accent. Hurrah!!! And as you go on to the other three older books with this narrator, Richard doesn't sound like a cranky old man. Can't wait till the rest of the older books are on Audible. Did I mention how much I love the new narrator??

I like realistic books that stretch the truth and the laws of physics...and also emotionally resonant narration that doesn't suck.

    Any additional comments?

Okay, I didn't hate this book or the narrator. I really wanted to like it. But what began to make that harder and harder in the beginning was that the details of what was going on when, who was who, where the characters were, etc seemed to be either missing or hard to follow. I think they were just so briefly mentioned that they were very easy to miss. The fact that the story was so reliant on a dense plot full of little details, not all of which mattered, and skimped on character development didn't help.

What really was the final straw for me, after I'd gotten to about mid book and was really no longer following the fine details of the plot, was the continuously, boringly tense tone. The main character was always tense. Always. It's not that she necessarily felt that way in the story all the time, though she often did--she was just written in that style in her dialogue and thoughts. She doesn't drink, she doesn't wear makeup, she doesn't give in to fear easily, she's not in the market for love every time she sees a pretty, dangerous man, she's always working--these are all admirable qualities-- but things like this seemed to function as a way to keep her always at a distance from other characters. It contributed to the tense and sober mood of the whole story, which can be a good thing if it isn't allowed to get tiresome. The main character's continual use of the words "MY GOD." whenever something big was happening really didn't help bring any grittiness to that mood either, though it seemed intended to.. Actually that just made it kind of cheesy.
I didn't get to know, or really want to know her characters. I didn't especially want Anita to further explore a relationship with any of them. None of it really excited me. The author wrote some really cool scenes though! She showed some creativity with that, for sure. It just wasn't enough to carry this largely featureless ball of plot and tension past the finish line in my opinion.

    "Read this one yourself"

I love the Anita Blake series and have read all the books more than once but I could not listen to this version. I don't like the narrator or the way the narration is staged. I would advise reading these the old fashioned way.

    "very entertaining"

I'm addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse books so this is another series that follows that supernatural genre. It's good, I'm looking forward to listening to more of this series
