Publisher's summary

Heartsick and desperate to leave her sorrows on England's shores, innocent Georgina Anderson seeks passage on the "gentleman's ship", Maiden Anne, disguised as a cabin boy. The captain, however, is no gentleman; he's the ex-pirate and irrepressible rake, James Malory.

The black sheep of a proud, tempestuous family, Malory soon sees through Georgina's masquerade and is enchanted by the courageous, high-spirited lady he has forced into intimate servitude. But though he has sworn he will never be enticed into matrimony, Captain Malory has finally met his match on the high seas - undone by the passionate heart of one remarkable beauty whose love of freedom and adventure rivals his own.

The saga continues: listen to more romatic tales of the Malory family.

The Gentleman Pirate gets his own story

The gentleman pirate gets his own story. In the other books, I didn’t really find James all that likable and it continues in this book. Some of the things he does I just didn’t like which is okay because Georgina (the heroine) is about as likable as James. I like this book but I think I have a soft for Regina from the first book in the Mallory family series.

James and Georgina’s story is cute with the “girl disguised as a boy” trope played out fairly well. The book does become a little tedious once everyone knows the secret. It is a tug of war between the two families and it does start to drag on and on. Also the lack of communication between James and Georgina annoyed the hell out of me because I hate that trope.

The narrator is not the best for this series but I am getting used to her. I don’t think I could binge listen to the series because there is only so much of the narrator I can handle.

My favorite Mallory books

After reading "Love only Once" the 1st book in this series, I could not wait to read "Tender Rebel". I liked Regina in the first book but the character development of Anthony her Uncle made be rush to read the book about him, #2 the Tender Rebel. After reading that book I thought how could it get any better than this; and I was not in Love with Regina's other uncle James, also Anthony's brother. However; I committed to read the entire series and I will, I'm on the 4th book now. I was wrong in my assumptions of "how could it get any better than the story of Toni"? Well needless to say I loved this book, and this was my favorite so far. This love story was much different than most I have read, and it had a lot of humor along with steamy love scenes. I would recommend all 4 books so far.

James Mallory is the BEST!

I’ve loved Johanna Lindsey for many years, but, this book in Mallory series is by far my personal favorite. I’ve read it a couple tomes and print, and I bought this version on CD years ago when it first came out, so I was delighted to find on Audible so I could share with friends in the car on trips.

I think she is only author in my lifetime I’ve actually grieved over....

James Malory meet your cabin boy.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anybody who is interested in this series should listen to this book. I am conflicted about the earliest novels in this series. I like the characters more as secondary players in more recent books than their own stories.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gentle Rogue?

I like how James goes from thinking he knows everything about women to being unsure about how to handle George and then back again.

Which character – as performed by Laural Merlington – was your favorite?

Tony and Warren ...and Conrad.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No and no. However it did make me smile.

Any additional comments?

I did enjoy the narration, I could always tell who was speaking. I really enjoy the Malory family and consider James and Tony the patriarchs, I really enjoyed listening to both their stories even as the subsequent novels have been more engaging, in my opinion.

It's a good one

I really enjoyed this book. I love the Malory brothers and plan to read all of the other books in this series. The only other one I've read so far is A Tender Rebel, which I also liked very much, but this was my favorite out of the two.
