Editorial reviews

Charlotte “Charley” Davidson is not your stereotypical Grim Reaper. She’s sexy, sassy, and likes to help dead people with unfinished business before they cross. She’s more of a bright light kind of girl than a hood with an axe. For her day job, Charley is an Albuquerque private investigator and a consultant to her police detective uncle. Lately, her nights have been steamed up with dreams of a hot mystery lover who may or may not be real. It’s chick-lit meets paranormal with a touch of mystery in the buzz-worthy First Grave on the Right.

Inevitably, this book will be compared to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. They both have feisty female protagonists, snappy dialogue, and zany characters. Veteran narrator Lorelei King also performs the Stephanie Plum books and is well-cast in this novel. What makes her fantastic in the Plum series is her ability to define the voices of all the secondary characters and inject them with interest and distinct personalities. In this performance, she does not disappoint. King seamlessly switches among the characters and has fantastic comedic timing. She elevates the work and keeps the laughs coming.

This is a debut novel from Darynda Jones. It will not be her last; this is clearly a launch for a series. There’s quite a bit of set-up as Charley begins to understand more of her abilities and the presence of other supernatural beings. Jones has created an interesting premise and characters. The mystery element is weak, however, and the writing is on the mediocre side. Jones is at her best with witty dialogue and keeps things moving at a brisk pace. Overall, it’s a fun, breezy listen and an enjoyable escape.

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Lorelei King, and paranormal romance will want to give this new series a listen. Julie MacDonald

Publisher's summary

First Grave on the Right is the smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

This is a thrilling debut novel from Darynda Jones, an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

First Grave on the Right is the winner of the 2012 Rita Award for Best First Book.

Keep chilled: spend some more time with Charley Davidson.

Well written, well read

Thoroughly enjoyable book. Complex enough to keep your attention, but not so complex as to be a chore to read. Lots of humor. Restored my faith in trying new authors. New to me, that is. Recommend it highly.

Surprisingly interesting

King does a wonderful job of the voices bringing the story to life. It isn't my usual story genre I listen to and bought this because I liked King. The story itself was interesting and King was the icing. The story develops nicely and in a believable manner not requiring a suspension of disbelief once you accept the universe the story is set in. The main character develops as the story develops keeping pace. It's worth the listen if you like PI stories and fantasy stories.

Keeps you drawn in + spice for the ladies.

I enjoyed this. The story has a good pace. Definitely for the adult ladies but more infisece on the story. It seems like it could easily become a series.

Love this book

This was a great book, I love the narrator she is a blast and so funny. I will go on the read the next one. I would reccomend this book to all my friends for a great read. I really liked the way the author lead us into the next book and explained some of the story at the end instead of leaving us hanging on what Charley was or what the very sexy male charater was. loved loved loved it.

Excellent, read it now

Got recommended to this, and I have to say I love it! The narration gives a great experience, with the snark and the voices. The story is classic pi stuff, a few cases intertwining, mysteries upon mysteries. But there's dead people too, and they follow her around. We get a serious backstory for the heroine, which is repetitive but catchy enough to make you want to know more. The sexy scenes are few and with purple prose, if you were worried about that. Totally recommended.

Enjoyed every minute.

Where does First Grave on the Right rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

I have just listened to the first two and can't wait for the next installment. A new author has been found and I think I will keep her. The only negative is it wasn't long enough.

What about Lorelei King???s performance did you like?

Loved listening to her.

Oh my goodness

I bought all 3 books thinking it was a trilogy, but no, there are more. Well, there had better be more! It's a complicated love story that is not hard to follow, with a really nice twist at the end of book 3. It has literally "laugh out loud" sections, and a few sad places. There is a constant flow of sarcasm, which is how Charley deals with her life. There are family members that start out flat, but end up being very interesting. There are friends that I'd like to meet in person. The best and worst part, though, is even though I've started listening to another book, I can't quit thinking about this series.

This is a book about a woman learning about herself, understanding her talents, and figuring out what is important. The man who loves her is difficult for her to love back. She is stubborn and prone to sudden decisions, making it hard for her family and friends to protect her. I love this story!

Lorelei King is a truly talented narrator, and I hope she continues to read the series. As much as she has enjoyed the first 3, I expect she will find a way. Her timing is excellent, and she seems to understand the characters, so that it feels like a performance rather than just a reading.

I'm looking forward to listening to this book many more times.
