From the New York Times best-selling author of the Night Huntress series comes a breathtaking new journey to the dark side of desire.
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shape-shifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together, because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

“[Frost’s] gift for vivid plotting is enhanced by the confident strokes of a writer at the top of her game.” (Fresh Fiction)
I really enjoy the Night Huntress world and was so happy to discover 2 extra books I could listen to! We get to learn about some of the blanks and seeming skips in the main books. Tavia is a great narrator, keeping in character. A must "read" if you love the series....
I love both books that Jeaniene has out in audio, but I want to hear the rest of the stories. please bring them soon.
I am a "Life is Awesome! Strive to be Worthy of it." student of life kind of guy. Feeding on Chaos and Empowering the Good. Group Hug!
Very Entertaining. Always nice to see how the idea of vampires have evolved. If you like these type of books you will not be disappointed in this series... However, it would be better if you do read the Night Huntress series first, this series branches off from that one. Although reading the Night Huntress series is not a requirement it will provide a HUGE background of the people in this book, I think it makes this series even more enjoyable.
I have a real crazy in love relationship with books!!!
I like that this continues to tie in to Cat and Bones' story but I detest the fact Denise was involved. She is a bit of a whiny, wimpy, t-terrible heroine. Sorry but the other reviewers had this right.
The most interesting was learning about Spade's history and life. This book gave us the opportunity to learn about Spade the man vs Spade the friend from the Cat and Bones stories. However, Denise has to be the most uninteresting character I have ever heard from Jeaniene.
I have listened to many of Tavia's performances and as always she was spot on. However, no matter how hard she tried she could not make this an amazing story.
Yes. It made me make sure I read the summaries before I purchase anything with Denise's character in it (since I read a lot of Jeaniene Frost novels).
Ok so don't take this the wrong way. While this was not my favorite book of Mrs. Frost's, it is still better than a lot of other books I have read/heard. If you are new to this author, please do not be thrown off by my review. This is just simply my opinion of this work and it does not hold true to every other story I have read of hers. Actually, the Night Huntress World 2 (I believe but don't hold me to it) is awesome! And of course all of the others with Cat and Bones it it. Bottom line, check out the others and if you catch this on sale, it is worth buying. I just can't encourage you to spend top dollar on it.
Say something about yourself!
If you follow the "Cat and Bones" novels you will love this book.
After Denise's husband dies she is left alone. Wanting nothing to do with the supernatural world. When a her family starts dying and she is confronted by a powerful shapeshifting-demon. She ended up in the company of Spade.
I enjoyed this book alot! Denise finds happiness where she least expected it and get some cool abilities as well. Spade becomes very devoted to her which is always a plus in my book. Bones and Cat make a cameo as well.
Tavia Gilbert, as always did a great job. I enjoy her voices. Nothing to dramatic and a bit soothing.
Would spend the credit!
I am in love with pararomance and am always trying to find new series with a great story and sizzling hot spots!
Sexy, thrilling, amazing
Spades backstory and his reluctance to love again.
Tavia hits the nail on the head with ALL the characters.
I love ALL the Night huntress books and have listened to each several times!
Love anything about shifters and lycanthropy. Paranormal romance is my thing! best escape and entertainment I can imagine! :]
YES!!! Any of the Frost/Gilbert pairings are the most entertaining and fun world to enter!! Just the right amount of adult themed fun along with great plots and just enough adventure! Frost books move along quickly and are never boring! The sex is also quite well written! Tavia Gilbert is an amazing...wonderful... fantastic.... narrator!! i just adore her and all the voices are distinct and the characters are clearly defined! GREAT pairing!
I love SPADE!!! He is so sexy and masculine and refined!!! GREAT male character!!
EVERYTHING!! See above... nothing but glowing praise for her as a narrator!! i will never hesitate to purchase something she has narrated!
Almost! Spent a weekend and i was done...
Great author!! Get anything she has written and is narrated by Tavia... wonderful, fun entertainment!! :]
passionate reader and vegan
Yes, I would. Jeaniene Frost is an excellent writer who's story telling is enhanced by an excellent performance by Ms Gilbert. Between the crisp dialogue and well-developed plot complemented by mature writing and the superb narration, it's an audio book well worth it.
When Denise finally realized her connection with Spade and letting herself become a part of his life, in every way :)
I think my extreme reaction was not so much the book as how much I loved the narrator. She was wonderful...great voices, great accents, intonation and inflection. My favorite narrator to date. I'll listen to her anytime (and in fact, am right now).
Ms. Frost is an excellent writer in a genre that is fraught with poor writing. She has class, style, a strong voice, has created a culture with her characters and gives them depth.
The different characters and how great a job the narrator has done with this piece
Spade. Hes just nuts but in a calm way:)
when Denise turns into a kitty lol...that and the phrase "what the bloody hell" cracks me up lol..love British accents
the whole book was great as one piece
The author has one heck of a sense of humor..she combines all senses one would feel while reading this.
So many books...so little time! :)
After listening to "This Side of the Grave" I realized I was missing something when I heard Spade and Mencheres had found love. I was grateful and excited to see that they had their own stories!
I was excited to see that Spade falls for Cat's friend Denise. You find out that there has been an attraction between the two of them for some time, but when Denise is forced to call him for help, things finally start to take shape between them.
Jeaniene has such a great way of foreshadowing things in her stories as you find out from listening. As Spade helps Denise with a demon, it seems to be inevitable between them despite them believing it couldn't work. And eventually, they begin to come to terms with things as they realize how much in common they really have.
I love that Spade finds love! I have always liked his character since I started listening to the Night Huntress series. Not only is he a great friend to Bones, but he is also a loyal and honorable man!
First Drop of Crimson is a great story thru and thru worth every credit or penny! :)
"The worst 'Brit' accent since Dick Van Dyke..."
Having read and enjoyed most of the series about Cat and Bones I thought I would try this offshoot too. The story didn't disappoint, but oh my goodness...that accent. Seriously, Bones has the worst cockney accent you've ever heard. Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins sounds practically perfect in comparison. I found myself laughing every time Bones spoke, which was very off-putting.
Her god-awful accent for Bones. It ruined the book.
Laugh in all the wrong places, because of Bones' accent!!
Please, get rid of the narrator for the next books!
