Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of his success—multinational businesses, vast wealth, a loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

"Even listening at 3x speed is too slow."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different narrator and better writer. The writing is terrible for the first book but does get better by the end... The joke phrase around my home with the wife is "oh my". I also wonder if the author has any personal experience or if she just intends to belittle average men and women in their "abilities". When you pay attention to the details depicting the actions of the individuals and try to picture what is happening in your head you realize that some of the actions are not possible or erotic.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Irrelevant question other than if I ever see the same narrator, I will skip it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

In every way possible. She made bad writing worse and the better writing worse than it had to be. She could have taken the approach that our time is valuable, instead she read as if she was paid by the hour. Seriously I listened to the first half of the first part at 1x speed and was pulling my hair out, couldn't stay into it. Then found the 3x button and it actually made the characters voices differentiable and sound normal but still far slower than average people read or can receive spoken words.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book? Pissed off at the praise this book received when it is soo terrible. You want some good reading in this genre check out Cherise Sinclair. Also disappointment for the relation to Twilight. Twilight was on an entirely different level of literature.

    Any additional comments?

Listen to it at 3x speed and bare through the first book. Don't expect greatness on the literature side or the storyline. Its an ok intro into BDSM play-style but doesn't do its potential justice.

"is the narrator a valley girl?"
Would you try another book from E. L. James and/or Becca Battoe?

    no and defintely no

What was most disappointing about E. L. James’s story?

when I got to "fist pumping" - disgusting

How did the narrator detract from the book?

her "valley talk" made listening absolutely impossible - the end of every sentence grated on my nerves - sounded like Saturday Night Live spoofs

What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

    the narrator

    Any additional comments?

    give me my credit back!

    "Terrible narration"
What did you like best about Fifty Shades of Grey? What did you like least?

Haven't read a book like this before, full of sexual stuff. That sparked my "inner goddess". But the narration is really bad, almost mechanical. The author keeps using the same words over and over again and makes Ana sound like a stupid high school child.

What do you think your next listen will be?

The second book, only because I want to know what will happen next.

What didn’t you like about Becca Battoe’s performance?

Very mechanical. The Christian Grey voice is too fake.

Could you see Fifty Shades of Grey being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Probably, but maybe not.

    "Fifty shades of annoying"
What did you love best about Fifty Shades of Grey?

If you can get past the annoying narrator and her whiny ass voice then you can enjoy this book. Also I kept saying to myself, "If this bitch says 'murmurs' one more time!!!..." I mean seriously how many times did E.L. James use this particular word to describe someone speaking quietly? How about 1,050! So ridiculous. With that being said, i found the story itself exciting. I can picture the millions of unhappy housewives eagerly turning the pages and gasping at every seductive detail. If you like hot and steamy, i recommend this book. However you will prolly enjoy it more without the annoying narrator and read it the old fashioned way. ;)

Would you be willing to try another book from E. L. James? Why or why not?

Of course, the first book is not enough i will definitely be finishing the series.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Becca Battoe?

Someone less whiny and who doesn't sound like a 15 year old shopping at the mall with her friends.

"How can this book be so popular?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This listen could only be a better listening experience if the book was totally rewritten.

Would you ever listen to anything by E. L. James again?

    Absolutely not.

Which character – as performed by Becca Battoe – was your favorite?

The characters were all pathetic. The main character was supposedly smart, and threw out a complex word once in a while to try to prove it, but she was so tediously repetetive in all her thoughts and dialog that I felt she must have actually had a sub-zero IQ. How many times would an intelligent person repeat "Oh MY!" Are there not any other words available with which to express oneself?

What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

    All of them.

    Any additional comments?

Don't bother reading or listening to this story. Other than the sexual content it is written at a first grade level.

    "Disappointing"
What could E. L. James have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Add more to the story line than just dominant sex and not repeat words and phrases so often.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not really

    Any additional comments?

I was told that after the first 100 pages or so that the story would get much better. I waited it out well past half way through the book and it never got any better. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

    "OMG....AWESOME!"

YES! Listening to the audio version was quite interesting. The reader did a wonderful job!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fifty Shades of Grey?

    The WHOLE Book!!!

What does Becca Battoe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    She makes it sooo real!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Again....The whole book was AWESOME!

    Any additional comments?

    ABSOLUTELY HANDS DOWN AWESOME BOOK!!!

    "The reader is unbearable"
What disappointed you about Fifty Shades of Grey?

It's a painful listen. I don't know if my feelings about the book are heavily influenced by how much I dislike the reader's voice and performance. She sounds like a valley girl, she can't do "guy" voices, and all of the characters sound the same (same inflections rather than tone of voice). Otherwise, the book is slow and not much happens. I don't like the characters or the dialogue. Every time the main character thinks, "Oh my!" or "He's so bossy", I simultaneously cringe and laugh. I seriously don't know what the big deal is about this book. Some women have really vanilla relationships I guess and this book blew their minds.

Would you ever listen to anything by E. L. James again?

Maybe. I'm told that book 2 is better because more happens.

Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?

    NO!!!

What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

    The leads!
