When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of his success—multinational businesses, vast wealth, a loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

    "GREAT STORY!!! Narrator...just okay."

I devoured this series! It has been a very long time since I actually could not put down an audiobook, and I lost sleep listening to this one. Suggestion: If you are planning on listening to the first novel, make REALLY sure that you have the second one ready to download!

I finally got used to the narrator about halfway through the first book. While I am not crazy about her male voices, I can deal because she is a female. What I can't quite get past is the abnoxious valley girl accent she gives Anastasia. Her character is shy but compasionate and Ms. Batoe makes her sound snotty and rude most of the time. I did not read the books prior to listening to them so I had no preconcieved notions of how the charaters should sound, but I agree with most that the narrator could be better. She is definitely not the worst that I have heard and did not take away my interest in continuing to listen.

If you are not a fan of explicit scenes in a book...don't even pick this up. There is a LOT of XXX in here but I found myself focusing on what would happen in the storyline more.

I would highly reccommend this to anyone who wants a good jaw-dropping story :)

    "A Disappointment"

I purchased this book because of all of the hype and was badly disappointed. Honestly, the premise seemed to me to be a lot like the Twilight stories. Other than the 'porn parts' the story seemed directed to the 12 to 14 yr old girl set. I found the heroine to be completely and totally unrealistic. I mean seriously, a normal, healthy, attractive female of 22+ years - recent college graduate and she had absolutely zero sexual experience.
The narration sounded more mature than the first narrator but only slightly. I would have guessed that the main character was 13 to 16 years old from the dialog and her general demeanor. I will not be purchasing the other two books in the series.

    "OMG! Very Hot!"
If you could sum up Fifty Shades of Grey in three words, what would they be?

    Yes! Yes! Yes!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Fifty Shades - Christian

What about Becca Battoe???s performance did you like?

I think she did a great job. You have to remember that Anna is only 21 and very young and inexperienced. I think Becca gave a great performance. I know alot of people did not like it and thought it was bad. I thought is was great. I have over 300 audiobooks in my library and I have run across some bad performances and this was not one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    "Not worth the hype"

Since it was the #1 bestseller, and in all the talk at work... I thought I would see what this book was about. I'm only half way through the first book, and it's not worth the Audible credit.

Not only is the author a horrible writer... they use the same juvenile terms and phrases over and over (get a VOCABULARY) but to make it worse, the narration is distracting and really bad. She changes her voice to be "Christian Grey", and I don't need that augmentation to the story. I listen to it at double speed on my iPod just to get through it... but I have to stop, it's just not good.

There must be better 'erotic' literature out there, this one is a waste of time.

    ""Holy crap!..so childish""
Would you try another book from E L James and/or Becca Battoe?

    Nope

What was most disappointing about E L James’s story?

The POV was so immature. It reminds me of a Mills and Boon novel from the 80s...but with a little S&M involved.

How could the performance have been better?

The reader's voice was really, really, really, annoying and childish.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

    "oh my..."

    Any additional comments?

I will definitely not buy another book.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Better Characters, Better Story

What could E L James have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Anastasia Steele was so weak it was infuriating.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    Her Performance was weak

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

Total Re-write. Write a strong Heroin! The 18th Century is over!

    Any additional comments?

This Story does not live up to the hype

"Guess it just wasn't my thing?"

For all the hype surrounding this book, I wasn't really impressed. It was shocking at times, yes, but perhaps the genre just isn't my thing, which is understandable considering the book's content! hah

I will say, however, that Anastasia's voice didn't bother me as it did some people, I thought she sounded like a woman in her early 20's, which...she was.

I'm still contemplating on whether or not to get the next book, the fact that its a trilogy makes me think there's more to the story that might get me to like it more. And the ending just leaves you champing at the bit for more... In the mean time I'll go back to my young adult novels to recover haha

"Twilight for Adults (that's not a compliment)"
What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?

Much better, imaginitive writing and a less predictable, trope filled story. The narration was also awful- Anna, the main character, is admittedly vacuous and uninteresting, but making her a valley girl made things even worse. The production decision to read the headers, salutation, and closings of each ot the endless, idiotic e-mails is inexplicable. When actually reading, the eye would automatically skip right over them, but in audio it is an endless, mind numbing repetition. Making the plot less predictable (seriously, who didn't know exactly what would happen?) would go a long way. Also, Anna's constant, irrational inner dialog only serves to highlight just how empty headed she really is. Honestly, I was hoping one, or both of the main characters would be killed, but no such luck.

Has Fifty Shades of Grey turned you off from other books in this genre?

Good question- what genre is this? Seems like an "adult" version of a Harlequin romance. Given the hype, I had no idea it would be so devoid of anything interesting, or that it was

Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?

Not if she continues to affect a whiny, valley girl accent.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It had the potential to be interesting given the exploration of S&M (not your every day topic), but it would require characters that people might actually care about.

    Any additional comments?

I'd like to say I'm baffled by the massive sales of this book, but the Twilight series prove there is a vast audience for badly written romance novels. This one has the added attraction of pornographic content. The thought of listening to the sequels makes me shudder.

"Save your credit for something else"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better writing, where were the editors in this book? Or better yet, the author could really benefit from some writing workshops. However, since this series is so popular, the author is probably laughing all the way to the bank. Why improve your craft if horrible writing makes a lot of money?

What was most disappointing about E L James’s story?

Terrible writing. I would expect better writing out of a class of advanced high school English / literature students. I don't understand how this is popular. As badly written as Twilight was, at least there was a payoff if you took the book as a romance book. I don't understand the attraction to Christian at all. And the book could be much more tightly written.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The poor narrator did not have much to work with here. The narrator was fine.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

Tighten the book up. It takes too long to get going.

What other book might you compare Fifty Shades of Grey to and why?

Twilight series. In their own way they both illustrate that true love can conquer all, including the baggage we all bring to a relationship.

    Any additional comments?

Absolutely love these books. Audiobooks always produce a deeper and fuller connection with the characters and story. When I was done with this series I missed Ana and Christian, so much so, I started listening to them again. I have 100+ audiobooks and these are the only ones I have listened to twice!"Oh my" is engraved in my mind, including the sensual intonation. Becca Battoe provides a very believable naive and innocent Ana.
