In defiance of society's strictures, Lady Olivia is determined to share her fascination with fencing with other ladies and enjoy the thrill of facing an opponent like the dashing Lord Milbourn. Ignoring convention comes at a cost, however. If she wants to start a fencing academy for ladies, then her family insists that she agree to a betrothal to the wealthy, but conventional, Lord Saunders. Despite her secret longing for Lord Milbourn and their shared passion for fencing, she reluctantly agrees.

Then tragedy strikes. The day before her school opens, Lady Olivia discovers a dead body in her office, adorned with a marble cherub resting upon his shoulder. Horrified, she turns away to find she has left a trail of footprints through his blood, blood so fresh that it is still sticky.

Scandal erupts, and her detestable fiancé demands that she close the academy. She stubbornly refuses and turns to the dangerously handsome fencing master, Lord Milbourn, for help. While the master fencer's past holds dark and perhaps deadly secrets, her heart yearns to trust him.

Torn between her growing love for the attractive and enigmatic Lord Milbourn and her promise to Lord Saunders, Lady Olivia is determined to fight for her heart's desire, whatever the cost.

first half was a bit frustrating.. police incompetent.. and left us with too many questions.. but I liked the last part very much.. I would have liked more of a push/ pull with relationship.. and his family. her family just seemed too cold.

liked the strong women

alas the narrator put me off. somehow I got bored listening to her voice. or perhaps lulled ... lulled into a daydream that had nothing to do with the story. but i tried again later and it was better.

could not get into it at first

She’s really good at all the different voices and it’s very easy to keep the characters separate because she is so good. However it should be a requirement that readers are verified that they can pronounce important words correctly.

In general I really like this reader…

I love this series of books by Amy Corwin. This one was especially good. Fencing wasn't a ladies sport, but Lady Olivia wouldn't accept that. So, she started her own school to teach ladies to fence. She was infatuated with the fencing instructor her brothers had and learned along with them. Unfortunately, bad things started to happen at her school and the authorities blamed her. Can Lord Milburn help her clear her name and find the real culprit? Will justice be served?

Fencing isn't just for men.

I loved the unique characteristics of a woman ahead of her time and a man so smitten by her he would sacrifice to make her dreams become a reality. I also found the mystery intriguing and full of suspicious characters who had vague motivations that seemed just plausible enough for me to wonder until the villain was exposed. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration and the writing and highly recommend this book.

A proper mystery and romance!
