Publisher's summary

For twenty-nine-year-old Lola Watson, life is finally looking up: she has fabulous friends, is working her dream job at a popular magazine, and has just inherited a beautiful house from her late aunt. Sure, her love life isn’t in great shape, but she’s got time, right? And so what if her new neighbors are a little too friendly (i.e., incredibly nosy)?

Okay, maybe she could stand for a little less drama from her friend Hubert, who unexpectedly moves in after his girlfriend kicks him out. Other than that, life is great! At least, until her little sister Mindy announces that she is getting married — on Lola’s thirtieth birthday, no less. It’s the final straw in Mindy’s long history of one-upping her sister, and so Lola’s best friend Piper hatches the perfect revenge: find a guy to pose as Lola’s fiancé and steal her sister’s thunder by announcing an engagement at Mindy’s reception. It’s an ambitious plan, and not just any man will do.

Enter Ryan Moriarty, Lola’s handsome, well-dressed, and wonderfully mysterious new neighbor. He’s definitely a catch, and their burgeoning relationship sets the neighborhood gossips’ tongues to wagging. But when their well-meaning meddling unearths surprising revelations, what they find could derail Lola’s entire plan — or enrich her life beyond her dreams. With its cynical-yet-loveable heroine, this lighthearted romantic comedy serves as an entertaining reminder that the deepest love and the truest friendship often can be found closer to home than we ever imagined possible.

Im reading it but....

I didn't trash it entirely but the leading lady is so whiney, it was a toss up whether to continue or not!

Not so amused

For someone who was about to turn 30, and the editor of Parents magazine, Lola was so self centered and immature. She was jealous of her younger sister, jealous of the attention her best friend gave to her baby.. Incapable of understanding adult relationships, very judgmental of her neighbors for most of the book. Lola did redeem herself somewhat near the end. As I listened to this book I kept thinking it was about a girl just out of high school. It could have been the performer had a young sounding voice. I'll have to listen to something else shr has done.y

Great, fun, easy read that definitly took my mind off my day-to-day stresses. Funny in parts too, which made it even better. Kate Rudd did an excellant job narrating. Thanks for keeping me entertained!

A fun read, especially for free

I enjoyed this book, however it did get off to a slow start for me. Once past that, it moved along and was a cute story.

Light and fun!

I giggled through most of this book. The characters were real and easy to relate to. The narrator brought the book to life.

Debated between three or four star

The main character sounds and acts like a very young adult who hasn't grown up yet. Lola is still caught up in her teen anxieties and self centeredness. I imagined the main character as a twenty year old and her sister as eighteen or nineteen and I was able to enjoy the story. Otherwise having a thirty year old woman thinking and acting that way would be pathetic. Also, Hubert comes across as a kind, good-hearted, wimpy, idiot. Not much character development happened but I think the author has great potential and I look forward to seeing if her stories get more depth and authenticity in later years and if the characters become more than one dimensional. Narrator did a fine job.

Annoying people being annoying dopey

I’m not sure who I found most annoying. Lola for allowing herself to be walked all over and putting trust in such crappy people, Piper for being well, just an idiot. A user through and through who validates everything she wants and then uses and manipulates people some more to get her way. Or maybe Lolas disgusting sister. Mean, vindictive, vicious, mean, mean and oh yeah, mean. lolas parents are pathetic and allowed Mindys behavior and always validated it. Then there is Hubert, a good guy, but for goodness sakes give the man a backbone. Something to show he isn’t the worlds dumbest guy ever. A good heart, but really what a schlub. And if I lived on that street there would be a for sale sign up faster than you could say “get me out of here”.

Why did I take so long to start this?

This was definitely an easy read that was funny, charming and absolutely worth the read. I'm surprised at how much I liked it.
