Publisher's summary

Diana Gabaldon's fans will be delighted to find Jamie and Claire as spirited and endearing as ever in this fourth installment of this magnificent saga. Romance, history, and time travel blend once again as the couple builds a new life together in the wilderness of pre-Revolutionary America.

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Davina Porter's narrative talent adds a special vibrance and resonance to Gabaldon's complex, colorful characters.

Critic reviews

"Gabaldon's range is impressive, whether she's evoking the rawness of colonial America, the cozy clutter of a modern Scottish parsonage, the lusts of the body or the yearnings of the spirit. Her legion of fans will love diving into this ocean of romance." ( Publishers Weekly)

Featured Article: The Best Women Narrators to Listen to Right Now

One of the biggest questions listeners have when it comes to approaching a new audiobook is whether or not they'll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable, as audiobooks are at least a few hours long (with many clocking in at 20 hours long—or more!), and sticking with one person's voice for that time period can feel like a big commitment. We rounded up some of the best female narrators with a robust list of audiobooks under their belts.

Wonderful Book

Any additional comments?

This series is completely addictive. A total escape. The book is beautifully written, a little far fetched at times but it is science fiction/romance, both genres being guilty of a certain amount of implausibility, so that's forgivable. Jamie is larger than life, a dead sexy alpha male and intelligent to boot. Who wouldn't want to travel in time for his company. Claire is a perfect match for him. The narrator is terrific with one small exception, Davina Porter can not do a North American accent, which for me (a native speaker) can be confusing at times. Having said that, this audiobook still is a great listen.

my favorite book so far of Dianas!!!

I have never yelled back at a recorded book so much, I in fact have acquired my sleeping dogs attention on numerous occasions. I do expect a Boston lobstah accent from Brianas character but as you could guess that's too much to handle for a someone, I enjoyed the back and forth between male character and female from Davina.

Great book.

What made the experience of listening to Drums of Autumn the most enjoyable?

Continuing to follow the characters of Claire & Jamie.

What did you like best about this story?

The suspense in not knowing how the story would end. Did Brennia go home, did Roger find her, what happens to Jamie & Claire.....

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

Her portrayals of all the voices. When I think of a character I can hear Davina's voice and how she portrays them. She is excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The only drawback to this book is the length. At points I felt like saying "just get on with it". But it was well worth the wait.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Busy mom who didn't miss out on a GREAT book!

Would you consider the audio edition of Drums of Autumn to be better than the print version?

For the stage that I am in life right now yes. If I didnt have this read to me I would not have the time or energy to read the print book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Drums of Autumn?

Being able to get the right accent and tone for the scottish words!

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Before the city that never sleeps....

Always an outstanding read.

Both the writing and performance of all of this series is tremendously talented.

Drums of Autumn weaves many threads tighter and tighter in the Outlander tapestry and is as thrilling as any of Diana Gabaldon's stories. Well worth the time in reading or listening.

Bloody great!

I've been searching for a series for three years to catch my interest like this!......and audible.com makes her books affordable.
You really must start at the begining...the first book draws you in and explains a lot...you instantly fall in love with the characters.
The books are lengthy, but you won't mind. I read the first in three days.

Good

I agree with most other reviews that the main issue could've been solved with a simple conversation. It felt too drawn out.

A very long story that will keep you guessing.

I'm hooked on the Outlander Book Series!! The ongoing love story of Jamie and Claire Frazier and how they live their interesting lives together is astonishing. This book is intertwined with Scottish and American History in the 1900's and the 1700's. Very intriguing.
