Alex Nolan is as bitter and cynical as they come. One of three Nolan brothers who call Friday Harbor home, he’s nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him. Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?

Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startlingly gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn’t for the foolish.

The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn’t know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans’ Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.

Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it.

    "Wrong Narrator"

Read this excellent book. The audio narrator is miscast.

I have no idea what goes into casting decisions but I can't imagine who thought Jeff Cummings, who has not narrated a ROMANCE before, was the right choice for a major new release in ROMANCE. He voices the HEROINE in the dreaded drag queen, breathy, I'm-so-blonde-and-dumb-as-mud-but-I'm-perky style that causes romance readers to grind their teeth. Please. As if that weren't bad enough, the ghost (a major character with a lot of lines) sounds whiney and annoying -- far from how the character is written. His hero voice is nothing to write home about either -- gruffer and ruder than he's written.

Producer? Director? Why didn't somebody clue him in?

There are so many talented narrators, both male and female, who could have hit a home run with this highly anticipated book. Narrators who GET romance. Mr Cummings buffoonish performance pretty much convinced me that he has a low opinion of romance and its readers. I don't think he liked what he was reading -- and it shows.

"This narrator made this book impossible to enjoy!"

Lisa Kleypas is a legend in her own time. Ive read nearly all of her books.
Though I admit this newest series has been lacking.

However, I heard great things about this book from friends who read it in advance of its release. I was ready to give it a chance. I know that Kleypas is able to write amazing contemporaries... (the Travis books).
The narrator is nothing short of a disaster. I cannot properly express my disappointment in everyone involved in recording this book.

I know I am one of many LK fans who were disgusted by this awful audiobook.

Shame on everyone involved. This is one of the most famous romance authors of all time. To try and take her writing into a more "fiction" territory, instead of pure romance, is similarly a huge mistake. And the audiobook is laughable.

"Average story, wrong choice of narrator"

I love Lisa Kleypas as a historical romance author but she still has to convince me as far as contemporary romance. Dream Lake isn't a bad book, but it just wasn't more than average. Surprisingly, my favorite storyline was that of the ghost - I'm generally not a big fan or the paranormal as a plot device and was afraid the ghost was going to be annoying and too much of a stretch. His story line was actually the most poignant and he elicited quite a few laughs from me during his scenes with Alex.

The narrator, though, is a different story. My main problem is that it's a man. It was jarring and distracting to have a man narrating a sweet romance novel - stick with women for this genre, please! He also gave the heroine, Zoe, a weird, detached voice that was quite irritating at times. He did a decent job with Zoe's grandma's voice though.

All in all, a pretty average and forgettable listen. I'm not sure that I'll be listening to the next book in the series (I assume it's going to be Justine's story with the video game company guy but my interest has not been piqued enough to look forward to it).

    "Not one of her best"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator did not do this book justice.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lisa Kleypas? Why or why not?

I have been a long time fan of Lisa Kleypas that is why I always purchase her books. But her last few books have lacked the passion and chemistry between her characters that I feel she has been known for.

What didn’t you like about Jeff Cummings’s performance?

His depiction of the heroine's voice made this audiobook hard to finish.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

I think this story would have worked better with a different narrator.

"Are you sure this was written by Lisa Kleypas???"

Long drawn out start followed by mediocre story that had such a great potential - a ghost and a love story could have worked well but this seemed to never end.

Worth of credit? No, sorry but it's not one of her best!

"Incredibly Bad Choice for a Narrator!"
What did you like best about Dream Lake? What did you like least?

I love the story of Dream Lake. Very sweet and tender. It's a bit awkward at first because the story is actually taking place at the same time as the previous Friday Harbor installment, Rainshadow Road. But once you get past that, it's a great story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dream Lake?

My most memorable moment would be a bit of a spoiler, so I won't elaborate.

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator, a female narrator would have made it better. I've yet to listen to a male narrator of Romance where they didn't make the woman's voice sound whiny and irritating, nor can they bring out the personality of the female character. Whereas most good female narrators are able to have distinguishable voices for both male and female without the male sounding effeminate. They could have had two narrators for this book, one male, one female and it would have been infinitely better.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

The romance is irresistible, it's an excellent story. I had read the book prior to getting the audio version. Had I not previously read the story, the narrator would have made it very difficult to focus on the story itself. His poor portrayal is very distracting from the story itself.

    Any additional comments?

I truly wish they would re-record this book with another narrator to give this sweet story justice.

    "Awful."

So very boring. The narrator's voice was horrible, his voice for the women was painful. The story was downright stupid.

"Terrible Audio Version of a Mediocre Kleypas Novel"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the 1st two books in the trilogy but this latest installment was disappointing. All of the likeable and charming characters from the first two books are missing from the last of this trilogy. We are left with a fairly unlikeable hero whose redemption is rather unbelievable yet predictable. The heroine, a pathetic Marilyn Monroe wannabe never inspires interest or admiration. The ghost subplot was grating and predictable and Alex's resurrection from death ridiculous. But the worst thing about this audio book was the performance. When simply narrating, Jeff Cummings was pretty good. But he is no voice actor. His female characters were painfully bad and his male characters almost as terrible. I had to force myself to listen to the whole book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Cummings’s performances?

    No!!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No.

Hi all. I'm in my 50's (that's relevant, i think), and I favor fiction. I like the british sensibility, and was introduced to the Forsyte Saga through audible ... loved it! I happen to also like Chinese writers, but they are not well represented yet at audible. Looking to follow readers with similar tastes ...

    "just okay"

I Just love Lisa Kleypas but this was a disappointment. The story was just okay- and I listened to it. The narrator was not very good for this story. His voices were just terrible. The female lead and the ghost were not good at all. I hate to say anything bad-- but I must say this was not a good fit at all.

I am not sure what is up with authors today. The ghost, magic etc element seems to be creeping into all the new books by all the good romance authors.

It sounds like the next story will be about Justine - Zoe's cousin, who belongs to a coven. And has a spell book. Ok I think I will pass.
