Publisher's summary

In True Colors: Alice Clark, a Wyr and schoolteacher, has had two friends murdered in as many days, and she's just found the body of a third. She arrives at the scene only minutes before Gideon Riehl, a wolf Wyr and current detective in the Wyr Division of Violent Crime - and, as Alice oh-so-inconveniently recognizes at first sight, her mate.

But the sudden connection Riehl and Alice feel is complicated when the murders are linked to a serial killer who last struck seven years ago, killing seven people in seven days. They have just one night before the killer strikes again. And every sign points to Alice as the next victim.

In Natural Evil: Claudia Hunter is on a road trip through the Nevada desert when she sees the body of a dog on the side of the highway. Pulling over to investigate, she quickly determines that the enormous animal is clinging to life. While working to save him with the help of the local vet, Claudia realizes there's something about the creature that seems more. Other. Wyr. Which makes this case of animal cruelty attempted murder.

Too injured to shape-shift, Luis Alvaraz is reluctant to tell Claudia what he knows about his attack, afraid it will only make her a target. But the sheriff is corrupt, and his attackers know Luis is alive and vulnerable. To make matters worse, a sandstorm is sweeping into town, and if they're going to survive the night, Luis will have to place all his trust in Claudia.

Awesome read

I've read all of the stories in this one and loved listening to them - Sophie is a terrific reader, and the stories are fun and interesting - would recommend.

Another great book by Thea Harrison

I've been hooked on Thea Harrison's writings since I started reading the Elder Race series almost two years ago. This particular book follows a tarot card set from owner to owner and looks and the people it draws together and the lives it changes along the way. An interesting twist by an author who likes to have fun with the romance/sci fi genre. Thea's sense of humor and playfulness continue in this book, which is what makes the whole series so addictive to me. Sure, I'm looking for a little titillation in her writings, but so many of these kinds of books take themselves too seriously (Nalini Singh, are you listening) and it just gets old. I'm looking for the next Elder release.

A quick fix

Wyrs on the hunt for bad guys, find love along the way.

The two short stories are a quick fix for your Elder Races need.

What a surprise!

I have really enjoyed the Elder race series but I almost skipped the novellas...
So glad I didn't! They were both great. I thought the stories and the characters were wonderful and I loved how they were connected by the tarot cards. I thought these books with would be to short to add anything to the series but they really do add texture to the Elder race world!

Very Cool deck of Tarot cards

An antique box holds a deck of tarot cards. When it has done its work one place it moves on to the next... tales of love, and the decisions each character makes are woven into action and adventure tales brilliantly...

Yuck

What disappointed you about Divine Tarot?

The narration put me too sleep literally. Sophie Eastlake's voice would be better off narrating romance books. The characters are weak. The plots fail to make the grade. I listened to this twice. I forced myself to stay awake the second time. My main question is 'what happened to plot and character development?'

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am an avid audio book listener. I have no set pattern on future purchases. I can however guarantee that Thea Harrison will not be one of them.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Sophie Eastlake's voice was too bland and monotone for this type of work. She put me too sleep literally and I wasn't even sleepy. My mind kept wandering during this work. The first story ended with me forcing myself to stay away. My response was thank goodness its over. The second story reading was worse then the first.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No

Any additional comments?

I don't have any of Thea Harrison's novels. My habit is to listen again to an unfamiliar author's work before further purchases. That policy keeps me from making repeat mistakes. This work will definitely keep me more purchases of her works. I am hesitant about getting further works by Sophie Easlake.

Not my Favorite Thea Harrison

Would you try another book from Thea Harrison and/or Sophie Eastlake?

I have but I would not read this one again!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I did not like how short the stories were so there was little or no character development

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance is always good.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

A full length.

More mature novellas - apples to oranges

“He went on a hopscotch skip straight into the land of crazy.”

Similarities to the full length books:
*Set in the same world of Wyr shifters
*Descriptive sex that somewhat works and somewhat weirds me out
*Occasional F bombs
*Author’s writing often has me asking ‘who says that’ or ‘what does that mean?’

“His presence spiced the air with exoticism.”

Differences from the full length books:
*Whereas book 1 was action packed, 2 was immature, and 3 was heavy on myth,
these two novellas are grittier, more straightforward urban fantasy
*So, far less action and humor, and more of a crime procedural feel
*There’s only the barest reference to the series characters
*Both ladies are older 35 year olds, which I appreciated
*There’s a pack of Tarot cards that feature prominently in both books

True Colors: crime procedural with an elder wolf detective and gentle free spirit Alice. I love me some protector romance and this one hit all the formula feels just right.

Natural Evil: channeling 80s Roadhouse vibes, or every VanDamme or Segal movie where the MCs take on a small town of bullies. Only, this refreshingly flips the script and has Claudia as a military veteran doing the protecting of injured Luis. I love that she was competent and took care of business, and that Luis admired her for it.
