Publisher's summary

Bold, daring, larger-than-life heroes and feisty, intelligent heroines propel Stephanie Laurens' exciting historical romances. Devil's Bride is rich with engaging plot and sensuous character development.

Governess Honoria Wetherby values her independence. She would rather travel the world than marry and give some man control of her life. Then, one stormy evening, fate changes all her plans. She stumbles upon a mortally wounded young man in the woods. When the stranger dies, she is trapped in a cabin with his body and with his newly arrived cousin, Devil, whom she soon learns is aptly named. He insists that their unchaperoned night together has compromised her honor, and, therefore she must marry him. Tension levels run high as Honoria plots to thwart Devil's marriage plans and tries to help him find his cousin's killer...the same madman who is now plotting to murder Devil.

Narrator Simon Prebble tantalizes listeners as he breathes life into these intriguing characters.

A Good Read

It was interesting, kept me involved, however did opt to skip through the lovemaking scenes….feel the author as talented as she is could have developed a different approach after the third ‘scene’. I plan to continue the series and know I will enjoy each book as I did this one. Thank you for the time, effort, thought, talent, knowledge, research, imagination and intelligence far beyond my ken to put this in my hands. The narrator, Simon Prebble could read the back of cereal boxes and I would listen. Well done!

Third read, still enjoyed it

I just finished her Bastion Club series, which comes chronologically before this. So happy to get my Simon Prebble back! No one does those men’s voices like him and he knows how to very them so you can tell who is who unlike Stephen Crossley. On the one hand, I feel really angry with Devil for the first third of the book and wanted to punch him where it hurts for his arrogance and manipulation of a Honoria. Then I realized that’s just the only way he knows how to be. Good for her for taming him! Enjoyed it just as much this time as the last.

Good mix of Characters

Enjoyed the strong characters, decent plot line, fun love story, and narration. The mystery was pretty weak, but I liked the people well enough to continue. Nice amount of “spice” while staying within the bounds of the time/era with language, etc.

Pleasant surprise

I definitely enjoyed this story. It really had just the right amount of romance and mystery. Enjoyed Devil (hate that name though) and Honorias relationship, and the relative ease in which it came together. I really prefer when its not dragged out forever. There was a ton of sex in this book. A lot. Simon Prebble is a good enough narrator, though I tend to prefer female narrators, I wouldn't object to listening to SP again. It was, however, kind of awkward listening to him read the sex scenes, especially from the female perspective. Sometimes it made me chuckle. Lol All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next in the series.

Pleasantly surprised!

This book has something for everyone! A good story with mystery and intrigue with hot chemistry between the main characters. I loved all the nicknames in the story! Although it lulled a bit in the middle I really enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to get this book on sale but I think it's definitely worth a credit!

Not so good

I don't know if it is fair to write a review since I did not finish this one. I just couldn't get into it.

Entertaining listen

Great start to the Cynster family collection. Well written with a nice mix of romance, mystery, and humor. I enjoy a hot romance and this one delivered with well written passion and sex while still maintaining a complex plot.

Way too much extra!

I love this narrator usually, but this time his voice would go loud, then soft. In the car I couldn't find a volume that let me hear all without blowing my ears during parts.
The story itself was good, but had way too much extra nonsense in it that didn't help the plot at all. And the sex was simply excruciatingly long winded. One scene was over 15 minutes, I just fast forwarded it. There were 6 adjectives where one or two would suffice.
I only kept going because I had a long car trip and I wanted to know who the murderer was!

I wanted to love this book...

What did you like best about Devil's Bride? What did you like least?

I wanted to like this book because as soon as you start reading you see its beautiful prose and a plot that throws you into a murdered body and the male and female leads stranded in a cottage for the night. However, the story's pace decelerates and stays flat until the very end. I am also sorry to say but I KNEW who the murderer is from the time he first appeared in the book. The hints were so obvious that it completely ruined the suspense.

Would you be willing to try another one of Simon Prebble’s performances?

No. The narration was completely over the top.
