Publisher's summary

Bold, daring, larger-than-life heroes and feisty, intelligent heroines propel Stephanie Laurens' exciting historical romances. Devil's Bride is rich with engaging plot and sensuous character development.

Governess Honoria Wetherby values her independence. She would rather travel the world than marry and give some man control of her life. Then, one stormy evening, fate changes all her plans. She stumbles upon a mortally wounded young man in the woods. When the stranger dies, she is trapped in a cabin with his body and with his newly arrived cousin, Devil, whom she soon learns is aptly named. He insists that their unchaperoned night together has compromised her honor, and, therefore she must marry him. Tension levels run high as Honoria plots to thwart Devil's marriage plans and tries to help him find his cousin's killer...the same madman who is now plotting to murder Devil.

Narrator Simon Prebble tantalizes listeners as he breathes life into these intriguing characters.

Sounds great!

Already loved the book and author, but Simon Prebble is the best narrator I have ever heard.

Powerful!

I read this book. I decided I wanted to hear the characters come alive thru oral dialog. It was amazing.

Some characters just don't age well...

I read this book 10-15 years ago and my 20-year-old self SWOONED at the gorgeous, self-assured, commanding Devil and his haughty lady, Honoria. Now, a little older and wiser, I feel very...blech by it all. Devil is an arrogant, domineering, borderline jerk who won't take no for an answer. It just doesn't feel right and borders on lack of consent. I had to keep reminding myself it's just a story, and that heroes tend to be written as products of their time.

That said, the writing is good and the narrator is great. It's nice to hear a male voice for this kind of story, which gives a fresh feel to some of the steamier scenes.

And steam there is aplenty! If you can set aside the feelings of discomfort as Honoria is bullied into one decision after another, you'll find this a sensual, occasionally humorous romp worth a listen.

Terrible narrator choice

I have tried, but I just cannot finish this book.
While the narrator is quite talented, and I would enjoy hearing him narrate other genres, his voice is far too old and stuffy. Especially during the more passionate moments, it is like hearing your elderly father voicing the Duke’s words and actions. [shudder] The discongruity was a complete distraction and ruins the story. Returning this one right away and will avoid this narrator in any future romance selection. I will look for the hardcopy version of the story.

Narration for main maile is terrible

I would rather see a duet for these books. Male voices are awful especially main male, the story is so good that it carries past that fortunately.

Favorite Stephanie Laurens Book

What did you love best about Devil's Bride?

The story was interesting right from the beginning to the end. The characters just made you want to know what was going to happen in their lives. The narrator did an amazing job of keeping me listening. I don't know about you but there are narrators and stories I can listen to over and over again and this is definitely one of those books.

Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to him in several other performances and he has always done an amazing job in all.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have listened to it in one sitting I would have. I should point out that I purchased this book even though I had already heard it once before. I believe I have actually listened to this book three times in full over the last six or eight months.

Good media for unrelated daydreams

First let me say that I enjoyed the narrator. His portrayal of "Devil" made me think of Liam Neeson's voice everytime. Sadly, Devil and however you spell her name are boooorrrrinnnggg. The gist of the book goes like this: governess chick says no, no, no, and big Devil guy says yes, yes, yes. Sex scenes were just too long with typical yucky adjectives for peices and parts. Oh, and there is this murder of somebody's family member that they talk about between the noes and the yeses. Great book to daydream thru, especially with my faux Liam Neeson voice whispering yes, yes, yes in my ear. I would wait until this book is on sale or free...not worth a credit.
