Publisher's summary

Bold, daring, larger-than-life heroes and feisty, intelligent heroines propel Stephanie Laurens' exciting historical romances. Devil's Bride is rich with engaging plot and sensuous character development.

Governess Honoria Wetherby values her independence. She would rather travel the world than marry and give some man control of her life. Then, one stormy evening, fate changes all her plans. She stumbles upon a mortally wounded young man in the woods. When the stranger dies, she is trapped in a cabin with his body and with his newly arrived cousin, Devil, whom she soon learns is aptly named. He insists that their unchaperoned night together has compromised her honor, and, therefore she must marry him. Tension levels run high as Honoria plots to thwart Devil's marriage plans and tries to help him find his cousin's killer...the same madman who is now plotting to murder Devil.

Narrator Simon Prebble tantalizes listeners as he breathes life into these intriguing characters.

Savor another Cynster novel.

Great Narrator!

I first read this series many years ago and had fond memories of it. Revisiting it with Simon Prebble narrating these characters only makes the series better! I can’t wait to start book 2 and will be following Mr. Prebble as a narrator.

sexy, but boring

I cannot finish listening to this book. I have over nine hours left and I cannot imagine going through the same scenes for this long.

Beware, the following may be considered a spoiler.

Perhaps, Devil will start seeing Honoria as more than good looking female well bred enough to make Duchess instead of a mistress. Those are her only options it appears. She does find him very attractive and his seduction work on her rather well (she didn't have to read about in the author's words). But, still, she gets no other choice. Possibly that attitude changes as the characters grow through the book. But I could not wait any more. The problem is the overwrought, over symbolized sex scenes. I appreciate a good sex scene with a passionate build up and lots of emotion, but the scenes in this book just wear me out.

The voice actor does a very nice job with this material. Good female and male voices. Devil is sufficiently macho, Honoria is quite haughty. Very well done.

The first of a great series

I have actually read this book several, well numerous times, and have now listened to the audio version several times and as stated in other reviews, I get something new out of it each time. I also am very appreciative of Simon Prebble’s narration more each time I listen. Usually I have complaints about the way male actors perform the female characters’ voices, but I only have one complaint here and that was his Chillingsworth’s voice in the late scene with Honoria, but then again, taken in context it might have been a better way to perform his character in that moment. Overall I applaud the author, narrator and all involved in this production. If you like the genre you’ll like this book and series, if not you’ll just have to miss out.😉

Wonderful!

I enjoy most of Laurens' s books, and I really like Devil Cynster, overbearing rake that he is (well, he did become duke of a very large holding and fortune at age 15).
He pretty much meets his match in Honoria, who stymies him from the time they meet. The murder of one younger cousin sets up the introduction to readers of the current set of eligible rakes of the family.
The story is sound, the characters very interesting, and the murder investigation draws things together.
I have reread it several times, despite my copies vanishing with visitors. I finally stopped that leak by getting audio.
Simon Prebble does a good job, once again. His try at women's voices is no worse than most, and is only fitting that a man with a pleasant baritone interpret a collection of male characters. I feel that it would have been disastrous to use a female narrator.

What an introduction to the (In)Famous Cynsters

Devil Cynster is one Larger than Life man to recon with. He is absolutely heavy-handed with everyone, save his wife. Honoria Prudence is not prudent when it comes to her husband. For her, he is everything and would do absolutely anything to ensure the dastardly deeds of the villain is unsuccessful.
The beautiful thing about this book is no matter what, family is the reason all is done and that cannot possibly be in dispute. All taken in as family has one for life. Between Devil, Lucifer, Deamon, Gabriel & Scandal, this family will fall hard and I am going to enjoy each story.
I absolutely enjoyed this book, however, it was a little drawn out but there was never a part in which I didn't want to know every little detail.

A Good Read

It was interesting, kept me involved, however did opt to skip through the lovemaking scenes….feel the author as talented as she is could have developed a different approach after the third ‘scene’. I plan to continue the series and know I will enjoy each book as I did this one. Thank you for the time, effort, thought, talent, knowledge, research, imagination and intelligence far beyond my ken to put this in my hands. The narrator, Simon Prebble could read the back of cereal boxes and I would listen. Well done!
