Publisher's Summary

Here is the third book in the much-loved Hamish Macbeth series from the author of the best-selling Agatha Raisin series.

The most hated man in the most dour town in Scotland is sleeping with the fishes, or more accurately, has been dumped into a tank filled with crustaceans. All that remains of the murdered victim are his bones. But once the lobsters have been shipped off to Britain's best restaurants, the whole affair quickly lands on the plate of Constable Hamish Macbeth.

Exiled to the dreary outpost of Cnothan, Macbeth sorely misses his beloved Lochdubh, but before he can head back home he must first contend with a detective chief inspector who wants the murder hushed up, a dark-haired lassie who is out to seduce him, and a killer who has made mincemeat of his last victim - and will no doubt strike again.

    "I keep buying these!"

    M. C. Beaton is a genius at creating interesting characters and linking them together in complicated situations. Hamish is a fun main character with many endearing qualities. As the village Bobby he is not afraid to use unconventional methods to solve the murders that keep coming his way. Lochdubh and surrounding area must be the most dangerous place in the world, even more dangerous than Midsomer!

I will probably purchase this entire series over time as I find they are an enjoyable way to fall asleep at night. Then if I wake up in the middle of the night I go back and continue listening and fall asleep again. It takes me a long time to get through a book this way but It seems to work better than sleeping pills and is much more enjoyable.

I recommend these books for light, fun listening, pure entertainment with no graphic sex or bad language.

    "Death in the Highlands"

This is a well written book with the right balance of humor and mystery. Hamish runs into murder and a group of eccentric characters in another Highland village. Hamish has some personal growth and I look forward to seeing how this affects his relationship with Priscilla in the future.

    "Easy charm"
Would you listen to Death of an Outsider again? Why?

Yes, the stories are simple, and easy to listen to. If you are looking for complicated and suspenseful, then this is not for you, but If you like Agatha Christie kind of mystery, a little more watered down, then you will like this story.

What did you like best about this story?

I actually like the main character Hamish, he is amusing and I also like the interactions of the villagers.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator is o.k. I like his characterization, but the voice he uses (I am guessing his own) when he is just reading, is a little boring. It feels paced too exactly, and maybe a little too slow.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, extreme reaction. Just a pleasant read.

"A Fun Mystery in the Highlands"

Death of a Outsider sees Hamish Macbeth leaving his beloved Lochdubh to spend three months covering for a police officer in the Highland town of Cnothan. With his beloved dog, Hamish gets to know the locals and discovers he's not the only "outsider" in Cnothan. There are quite a few, a lovely lass from Canadian and a married couple that the locals cannot stand. It seems that Mr Mainwaring has a way of causing the locals to dislike him, as he picks and prods his way into all their lives. When a skeleton turns up dead and it is discovered to belong to Mr Mainwaring, Macbeth and Inspector Blair set out to investigate the case and find out who disliked Mainwaring enough to want him dead.

I've liked the first two books in this series and I'm continuing on by listening to book 3, Death of a Outsider, on audio. I love seeing what Hamish gets up to and it's nice to see him away from Lochdubh for this adventure. He's trying to keep his mind off Priscilla, his crush and the girl that he can't quite see a future with, even though he wants to. He finds things interesting in Cnothan - especially with a very unattached Canadian artist. And of course there is a murder to solve!!

Speaking of the murder. I read a lot of murder mysteries and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised of who Mainwaring was killed and the discovering of his skeleton. Yes not a corpse but a skeleton. I haven't seen this in a previous mystery and I love how creative M.C. Beaton was with this.

I really enjoyed Death of a Outsider and will listen to more of these books on audio. It seems that there was a new narrator with this one - Shaun Grindell. He provides the voice for the rest of the audios in this series, and while it took me a little while to get used to his narration I am looking forward to seeing how he narrates future books.

    "Shaun Grindell is the best!"

I am a big fan of the Hamish Macbeth books and have read them all multiple times. Recently I decided to listen to all of the audiobooks in order.

I found out that the UK narrators changed and the books were rereleased. Personally I think Shaun Grindell is the best narrator/performer. His voice for Hamish is very suitable and his female voices will make you cackle. Great job. Highly recommend.

Each one of the stories gets better and better. I must admit, that the goriness of the first murder was very creative without having to give you all the "gory" details!

    "My Favorite So Far"
Where does Death of an Outsider rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the genre this listen is in my top 10

What did you like best about this story?

Hamish travels to another town and meets more than a few despicable characters. The storyline moves along at a good pace and a few twists in the plot are page turners.

What about Shaun Grindell’s performance did you like?

His voices match the darker storyline in this third book. I strongly disagree with the negative reviews given Grindell.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My frustration with Hamish's, I'm a doormat, wipe your feet was somewhat mollified by his in your face approach to some real schmucks. He also kicked some butt.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to listening to the remainder of the series..

A 'Heads Up'. My download had chapters out of sequence and I can't be certain some content isn't missing. I struggled through but find this sloppy QC unacceptable. Not the first time with bad downloads. Wake up Audible. People do read reviews.
