Publisher's summary

MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary 21st-century woman.

Or so she thinks...until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death - a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone - Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers.

The quest to find her sister's killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed - a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae.

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane - an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women - closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book - because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds.

Fever Series Book 1 Audio

Would you listen to Darkfever again? Why?

The Fever Series one of my favorite book collections. After the first few books the series becomes positively addictive. I've read it several times and turn to it often when there are no new series that appeal to me.

I am unsure if I will purchase another audio book for this series. The actress sounds a bit older than Mac, who is barely old enough to bartend. Barrons' voice sounds like an old woman with a Cockney accent which is disturbing on a number of levels.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love all of the characters in this series.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The reader's performance was decent, I just feel like she was miscast.

Sookie Stackhouse and Mackayla could be sisters

I just didn???t get the whole sex by death fae thing. He was just kind of thrown in there. But I did like Barrons, he reminded me of Eric Northman!

If you like Mortal Instruments, you'll love this!

Note: this series is not YA. There's swearing and a lot of sexuality. But, it is still very similarly themed to Mortal Instruments. Cannot wait to read the entire series!

Oh - the lead man, Jericho's voice sounds like an 80-yr old. I thought he was an old man until Mack said he was late 30's.

Okay...

I think that Karen Marie Moning has a good plot/idea in this series, and I will likely listen to another, if I can bring myself to listen to the same narrator again. (We get it, you're supposed to be Southern - you don't have to sound like Scarlett O'hara.) On second thought, might have to look for these on Kindle. ;)

There were a few things I didn't like... the narrator, the constant references to nail polish colors, makeup, etc, and the feeling that the book just "ended" with no resolution. I have since learned that these books are more serial in format, so I will have to just keep reading/listening, if I want to find out what's going to happen...

With all of that said - I am interested in what happens next, so will keep this series in mind when I don't have anything new to listen to.

I love Karen Marie Moning.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mac and Jericho are my favorite characters. Even after reading all the books books I still have many questions about Jericho. I hope as the books continue more of his past will be revealed. Mac is very nieve at the start of the series, but her character grows throughout the books.

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think she did well with the female characters, but Jericho sound more like an old woman. I wish Phil Giganti did his voice in all the books. She did a nice southern accent and Irish accent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

At the end when Mac is hurt and Jericho takes care of her.

Wonderful start to a wonderful series

This book is Moning's first attempt at first person perspective writing and she has hit this story out of the park. SUMMARY (POTENTIAL SPOILERS): MacKayla Lane is a beautiful happy southern belle until she gets the call that will forever change her life. Her sister Alina has been brutally murdered in Dublin while studying abroad. Even though against her parents' wishes, she herself goes to Dublin to try to get the cold case reopened. While there, she meets enigmatic bookstore owner, Jericho Barrons. Unsure of who trust or what she is, she discovers she has the ability to see through Fae glamour. Barrons takes her on a crazy ride, stealing Fae relics, and testing her resolve. With a cast of good and bad fairies, other women with her talent, and the sexual tension with Barrons makes for a great foundation for the series to expand upon. While Moning says this is a book of hope, slowly the pink facade Mac brought to Dublin begins to turn dark, making the resolution in Shadowfever that much sweeter! Hang on and enjoy the ride!

Stunning world of magic and mystery

The author has created a world of interesting characters in enchanting Ireland. Mac travels to Ireland to see why nothing seems to be happening with the investigation of her sister’s murder. There she encounters an unknown world of creatures with powers to make you shiver!
Joyce Bean does an excellent job with this narration, bringing the characters to life in full blown colour.
Well worth the credit for lovers of fantasy.

The narrator is awful

Literally the biggest issue with this book is the narrator. That is the worst "Irish" accent I've ever heard, considering she's using a SCOTTISH accent. Also, she's way too old to be narrating Mac, as Mac is in her 20s and this narrator sounds like she's in her 50s. Yeesh. Makes it hard to get into.
