Publisher's summary

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.

At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, a beautiful witness who identifies him at the scene of a mission gone terribly wrong, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman—and convinced she is something much more than she seems.

Pulled into a vortex of intrigue and danger, she can neither resist nor understand, Tavia is uncertain whom to trust. And while everything sane and logical warns her against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that the handsome, deeply haunted male stirs something primal and ravenous within her. But even as she surrenders to her cravings, nothing can prepare her for the shattering truth of who—and what—she truly is.

As the Order’s enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Dragos and his Minions unleashing a hell on Earth like nothing ever seen before, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out and the streets running red with the blood of innocent lives, both Breed and human, together Chase and Tavia must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all—or die trying.

Spend some more time among the Midnight Breed.

Exceptional Series-What to listen to now?

I don't remember how I happened upon this series, but after reading book 2, I went back and read and listened to all 10. The books are really well written and Hillary Huber does a fantastic job narrating them. Before this series I had always avoided anything that ventured into the fantasy genre preferring to stick to mystery and romance. Now I seek them. If you loved this series, I suggest you try Jaquelyn Frank's Night Walker series narrated by Xe Sands, who is fabulous and perfect for the series. Also try the Immortal Guardian Series by Diane Duvall (hopefully Audible will get more of these soon). The Elder Race Series by Thea Harrison is exceptional and shares the traits of these other fantasy series of being very well written and narrated, seeming totally real and rational, having well developed characters you can identify with, very compelling story lines and including steamy romances.

If you also fell in love with this series, please share others of this caliber that you have found.

don't miss this one!

I've been so discouraged lately with the other series books that I've been reading lately, that I was almost scared to listen to this one. Seems, so many of the authors are in to pushing out book deadlines, or just have too many appearances to make, or whatever, that the quality of writing has gone down the tubes. Romance has turned to smut, in a lot of cases. This book was really worth reading; with an actual plot, action, suspense, love and victory. Exactly, what I enjoy listening to while passing the time. Thank you, Lara Adrian, for not forgetting about your readers, and giving us an enjoyable book, that I was glad to have used a credit on.

The Midnight Breed Series (BWS)

I have recently been introduced to this author and am enjoying this series. Immensely. Just finished Darker After Midnight and continuing . I initially did not review since series years old but I am really enjoying. This is a combined review. Thought I would not since same theme in all are same boy meets girl. boy gets girl. but stories were interesting and diverse. Did not like that the warriors broke their discipline over someone they only knew for a couple of days. Like that breed mates started having a role outside compound. Did not like that in secure place like compound that people just went wondering around without restriction. Not realistic that the order with limited number could defeat Dragos thousands. Not ok for Order to ignore rules like breaking into a woman’s apt and assaulting her sexually in her sleep. Need a way to determine if breedmate, not finding out accidentally while seducing or during lovemaking. I n Dr office, Chase and Tabia needed to get in and out not sit around. Needed more about the race that created breedmate. Need a way to legitimately feed . Location of compound too easily compromised by letting outsiders in. How can these dark haven properties just be sitting around. Like Corrine, do other mothers find their children? Why no revelation or further use of Hunter’s power? Will now move on to next book.

Best story yet in the series I loved it. Loved the chemistry of Chase and Tavia. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

This ends a long story arc with the story of my favorite Chase I liked him best from the beginning in spite of his various issues.

The best of the series!

The story includes all the characters in the first nine books, but that's not why I call this the best of the serries. The introduction of more varieties of breed was an interesting concept. The focus of the book is about Sterling Chase and his strugles. (I've always wondered how "Harvard" went to a traditional university.) The conclusion was great. Hillary Huber was an excellent narrater too.

Continues to grab you

I’m not sure how the author continues to suck me in with intense interest, but she does. Each story has so many characters but the thread continues through each one! I love the characters of the order and the talent of their mates. Good job allowing there to be so many strong, non-simpering women!

I didn't know this book was the end to the series.

Would you listen to Darker After Midnight again? Why?

No. It was good just not that good.

Have you listened to any of Hillary Huber???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to the entire series and she is a fine narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I really like this series and wanted to know what was to happen in this book.

Any additional comments?

Too bad this was the last book. It was a nice ending to a geat series, but as with all things good they must come to an end. I really enjoyed the trip. Maybe I'll start the series over at some point and listen back to back all of them...just not any time soon.

Wow!

Would you listen to Darker After Midnight again? Why?

I'll be listening to the entire series multiple times...it's excellent!

What did you like best about this story?

This story brings everything together and everyone has a part to play. It was exciting and action packed and I'm just freaking that it's all over. I don't want it to be over. I wouldn't mind having the Breed in my life for another 10 books!

Have you listened to any of Hillary Huber’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Hillary Huber. She brings the characters to life and is consistent in her renderings of the voices between books. I doubt she would have to verbally identify the characters and I would still know who's voice she was portraying. This was really necessary in this book because they were so often all together in a scene. She does female voices without them sounding whimpering and breathless and her male voices make you forget you are listening to a female narrator. I've heard her on other titles and the same held true. She's excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I tried. I seriously tried. If the world would have just left me alone long enough...I would have!

Any additional comments?

If you haven't met the Breed warriors yet...you're missing out. If you routinely visit the Brotherhood, the Elder races, the folks at UGH or the Horsemen, you'll love this series!
