Publisher's summary

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.

At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, a beautiful witness who identifies him at the scene of a mission gone terribly wrong, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman—and convinced she is something much more than she seems.

Pulled into a vortex of intrigue and danger, she can neither resist nor understand, Tavia is uncertain whom to trust. And while everything sane and logical warns her against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that the handsome, deeply haunted male stirs something primal and ravenous within her. But even as she surrenders to her cravings, nothing can prepare her for the shattering truth of who—and what—she truly is.

As the Order’s enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Dragos and his Minions unleashing a hell on Earth like nothing ever seen before, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out and the streets running red with the blood of innocent lives, both Breed and human, together Chase and Tavia must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all—or die trying.

Spend some more time among the Midnight Breed.

Please Don't Say It's Over!

Those of us who have read or listened to The Breed series have been waiting for Sterling Chase's "happily ever after" for quite awhile. However, this listener thought that this was the conclusion to an awesome series and I didn't want that. But not to worry. Even though this book tied up the loose ends nicely and brought us to a conclusion of sorts, a glance at the author's website shows books #11 and #12 to come so the world is not yet safe. (hooray for that!)
Chase is one of the good guys. He has always had a sense of honor even though he has been through some pretty horrible events. So he was due for some good stuff to happen and in this book, Chase found his perfect mate in Tavia. Tavia is a strong, likable character that is a great heroine, and she goes well with the tortured Chase.
Once again Hillary Huber is the narrator and she does an excellent job with the voices and accents. It is always nice when a great narrator reads the entire series.
Lara Adrian has not been repetitive in the course of 10 books. She came up with a fresh plot for every book. What an imagination she has!
I highly recommend this book, and the entire series. Not only did this series interest me enough to purchase every audio book, it has interested me enough to listen to every audio book again and again.
Buy the book, buy the series. You won't be disappointed. It's 5 stars all the way.

Wow!

Would you listen to Darker After Midnight again? Why?

I'll be listening to the entire series multiple times...it's excellent!

What did you like best about this story?

This story brings everything together and everyone has a part to play. It was exciting and action packed and I'm just freaking that it's all over. I don't want it to be over. I wouldn't mind having the Breed in my life for another 10 books!

Have you listened to any of Hillary Huber’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Hillary Huber. She brings the characters to life and is consistent in her renderings of the voices between books. I doubt she would have to verbally identify the characters and I would still know who's voice she was portraying. This was really necessary in this book because they were so often all together in a scene. She does female voices without them sounding whimpering and breathless and her male voices make you forget you are listening to a female narrator. I've heard her on other titles and the same held true. She's excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I tried. I seriously tried. If the world would have just left me alone long enough...I would have!

Any additional comments?

If you haven't met the Breed warriors yet...you're missing out. If you routinely visit the Brotherhood, the Elder races, the folks at UGH or the Horsemen, you'll love this series!

Exceptional Series-What to listen to now?

I don't remember how I happened upon this series, but after reading book 2, I went back and read and listened to all 10. The books are really well written and Hillary Huber does a fantastic job narrating them. Before this series I had always avoided anything that ventured into the fantasy genre preferring to stick to mystery and romance. Now I seek them. If you loved this series, I suggest you try Jaquelyn Frank's Night Walker series narrated by Xe Sands, who is fabulous and perfect for the series. Also try the Immortal Guardian Series by Diane Duvall (hopefully Audible will get more of these soon). The Elder Race Series by Thea Harrison is exceptional and shares the traits of these other fantasy series of being very well written and narrated, seeming totally real and rational, having well developed characters you can identify with, very compelling story lines and including steamy romances.

If you also fell in love with this series, please share others of this caliber that you have found.

don't miss this one!

I've been so discouraged lately with the other series books that I've been reading lately, that I was almost scared to listen to this one. Seems, so many of the authors are in to pushing out book deadlines, or just have too many appearances to make, or whatever, that the quality of writing has gone down the tubes. Romance has turned to smut, in a lot of cases. This book was really worth reading; with an actual plot, action, suspense, love and victory. Exactly, what I enjoy listening to while passing the time. Thank you, Lara Adrian, for not forgetting about your readers, and giving us an enjoyable book, that I was glad to have used a credit on.

Great Series! Good ending

I must say I didn't think this was the BEST book in the series but it was still good. It's nice to see an author end a series before it got too tired and worn out. I would recommend the entire series.

Okay

This book could have been better. The ending of Dragos came to easy for all the build up. I still don't like the character of Chase but I do like Tavia.

I can't recommend

Okay I will say that the first part of this book is great. Tvaia is a good character to be introduced as the first female breed. And I don't feel I am giving anything away with saying it. I love way she builds the relationship with Chase and the challenges they must face in the first part of the book. It's even interesting bring the other charters of the order into the fray. I was a little disappointment that Gabrial doesn't standup for herself and tell Lucan to get over himself as she would based on her character in book one. She comes off a little to sheepish as to what she wants in this book. But whatever...
But then the book takes a weird turn, whether it's because the series is coming to an end or ...
At one point I thought spaceships would be landing to take part in the fight to save mankind and not just mankind in Boston or Maine but all over the world..
I love the breed series but the last two books were lacking. I highly recommend the first 5 books.

This ends a long story arc with the story of my favorite Chase I liked him best from the beginning in spite of his various issues.
