Publisher's summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love...

Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy

Dark Witch

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.

Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits.

Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.

Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself - and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope - and love - alive...

Overly Dramatic

Please just read the story. Trying to play all the parts rarely works. Here it's intrusive, and often bleeds out of the dialogue into descriptions and exposition. Sometimes sentences and paragraphs gush into each other. Accents are OK.
NB: I'm male, if it matters. SF and fantasy fan.

I was looking forward to a witchy tale.

I like witch stories, so I was willing to be generous. I just couldn't get into the story.
I saw several reviews that bashed the narrator. I didn't think she was so bad. A little over the top sometimes, but the heroine was supposed to be bubbly and overly eager.
The story begins with the ancestor of Iona, the primary subject of this part of the trilogy. The stage is set for the future battle of the descendants and the evil being. Flash forward to today.
There's a charming Irish village that warmly welcomes Iona, the Yank cousin. There is a love interest who just falls into place in possibly the most boring romance ever written.
The evil being who just won't die is laughably ineffective. The story culminates in an epic battle that just isn't. The epilogue ties up the loose ends between Iona and her beau and so you buy book 2. No, I don't think so. Just not interested enough in the characters to continue.

I'm going to stick up for the narrator. Her accents sounded good to me. Maybe just tone it down a bit.

Nora couldn't have done it without K. Kellgren!

An amazing journey, very much because you FELT like your were in Ireland living the fight, the love, the meals, and the pubs. Great book that ended too abruptly!
