But before he can reach home, Ailig encounters Morainn MacRailt, a beautiful young widow living a solitary life in the glen. He is taken by her quiet confidence and the powerful connection that sparks between them, but his duty lies at Castle Assynt, where his clan is in turmoil.

Determined to bring the MacLeods to order, yet wary of whom to trust, Ailig makes a fateful decision: he offers Morainn the protection of the castle in return for becoming its chatelaine. Clever Morainn quickly becomes a valued advisor, and as the trust between them grows, so does an undeniable passion. Together they endeavor to restore the MacLeod legacy - and discover a once-in-a-lifetime love.

"Another entertaining Scottish Saga from Ms Wittig"

This book transports the listener to the Highlands of Scotland in the times of Robert The Bruce and the clans he ruled. This is a sequel to Charming The Shrew, and tells two stories in one tale - the battle for Ailig MacLeod to claim the right to become the Chief of the MacLeod's as ordered by his King and overthrow his father - whilst also trying to win the heart of Morrain who has captured his heart.

Slowly, through patience, trust and respect we see that, even the impossible, just might become possible for Ailig who is a kind and honourable hero that you just can't help routing for (not your usual arrogant Alpha Highlanders). This has a great blend of characters, good and evil, all adding to the story which is enjoyable but won't have you sitting on the edge of your seat in excitement.

Worth a credit? Because of the price I'd say no just buy it and save your credits for a more creditworthy and costly book, or perhaps put it in your Wish List and wait for a Sale, but worth a listen? then it's a yes.

    "Nice Scotts Romance"

There being a plethora of Scottish historical romances, it is difficult to find something unique, but Ms Wittig has done a good job of it. Some good twists take the story to the expected happy ending. Narration keeps the book from being 5 stars in my opinion, but doesn't ruin it. There are better narrators for the language.

"Story lacked the appeal needed for memorability"

Just finished reading this book earlier today and have to say after reading it, I did not spend any time thinking about it at all. What that tells me is that even though the story was good, it lacked the necessary appeal to make me think about the book once I was done. The story lacked what is needed to have it standout amongst all other books in its category. So yes. I was somewhat entertained when I read it but will never read it over again.

    Story
    "Highlander with no Ba!!s"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I just expect the highlander to be a strong tough man. Not one who is thinking of slipping out the door to avoid a confrontation.

What could Laurin Wittig have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Read a Suzanne Wright book and learn what a tough but soft man is like.

What didn’t you like about Ralph Lister’s performance?

His performance was Ok and may have gotten better but I couldn't finish the book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I couldn't finish it.

    Story
"Middle of the road ..kinda cheesy at times"

Like the narrators voice. He's not great but he's good.

This story is kind of cheesy at times. I liked it at times and then others I found myself bored.

The plot is fine...but it isn't developed too well.

The romance didn't inspire any special feelings or reactions.

The male lead was too much of a wuss when it came to Mora...just too over the top sweet....not manly enough for my taste.

It's not credit worthy...but I would buy it on sale...which is how I got it.

    Story
"Not 5 stars only in comparison to Outlander"
    Any additional comments?

Using Outlander as my measuring stick means other series seem to come up short in the rating, but this novel/series is worth the listen. I listen to so many HR lately, they sometimes blur together to be honest. But this one stood out because just before this I listened to a highland novel where the language was too contemporary for the time period. The language in Wittig's writing seems authentic, though I'm not an expert. The build up to the main couple (there's always a couple at the centre) coming together was well timed with the story. I liked the supporting characters a great deal. The dialogue was witty and kept me interested. The narration was seamless. I will say at the beginning I thought I was hearing an Irish lilt, but that seemed to evolve until I didn't notice it anymore. I will try Laurin's other highland novels.

    "Enjoyed this one, too"

I enjoyed this story, too. It was an easy read that held my interest. I've enjoyed other Laurin Wittig books that were a little different from this one but also very good; which is a sign of a good author.

"If I could leave negative stars I would."

I don't know about the story line because I was unable to continue listening to the narrator. I normally love any highland story but just couldn't stand the voice.
