Publisher's Summary

At five and 20, Prudence Merryweather knew very well the risks a woman took by visiting a gentleman in the dead of night. But bearding the notorious Earl of Angelstone in his den was the only way to stop him from engaging her hot-headed brother in a duel. And that was why she found herself ushered into Sebastian's forbidding presence at three in the morning - and thoroughly kissed before dawn.

She was a country-bred innocent - and an intriguing experience for a man who dwelt more in the shadows than in the sunshine. Yet as her boldness drew Prue into one dangerous episode after another, Sebastian found himself torn between a raging hunger to possess her and a driving need to protect her. And the reckless beauty would soon need all the protection she could get.

    "Not for me."

Sebastian is an Earl who is bored, so he investigates crimes for fun. A Bow Street Runner brings him crimes to solve. Prudence investigates ghosts for free. She meets Sebastian and wants to participate in his investigative work. She follows him to a bedroom during a party which does not help. Of course they are seen, so they have to become engaged to protect her reputation. Prudence is a Mary Sue character (poorly developed, too perfect and lacking in realism to be interesting). She is a young single lady running around without a chaperone. Some of her actions are silly and stupid.

There are three or four investigations during the book. The author focused on those instead of developing characters and relationships. There are three sex scenes. There is also a kidnapping and rape scene that is described after the fact. I’m usually ok reading about violence and rape, but this one made me feel sick.

It doesn’t matter to me if it’s historically accurate or not. But I did not care for Prudence’s overly wordy dialogue. Other characters use the word “ghost.” Prudence calls them “spectral phenomena” to imply her supposedly scientific nature. For example, someone asks her if she’s ever seen a ghost. “For some reason the memory of the presence she thought she had detected in the black chamber at Curling castle flashed into Prudence’s mind. “There was one instance where I believed I might have discovered a genuine example of spectral phenomena” she said slowly. “But I was unable to find any evidence to support my conclusion.” Another example “I believe I may have witnessed some significant evidence of spectral phenomena.”

Prudence also used the word “my lord” too much. Here’s an example using the word Tom instead of my lord. Are you awake Tom? Would you like some breakfast Tom? What do you want to do today Tom? I saw my sister yesterday Tom.

Prudence insists Sebastian mend the problems with his relatives. I’ve noticed this author puts family bonds and paranormal in a lot of her writing. They were here.

    AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Anne Flosnik was very good. She used a variety of voices. He male voices weren’t perfect, but they were better than those by some other female narrators. I like her British accent. It was pleasant to listen to.

    DATA:
    Narrative mode: 3rd person.
Genre: historical romance with some paranormal.

    OTHER BOOKS:
I’m not having good luck with Amanda Quick books. I’ve read four and gave them 3 stars or less. However I’ve really enjoyed some Jayne Ann Krentz books (her other name). My favorites of those are All Night Long, Trust Me, Running Hot, Deep Waters, Sizzle and Burn, and Twist of Fate.

    "A classic Amanda Quick book."

Amanda Quick's books are all about the headstrong heroine and the dark, brooding hero although this one is a bit overbearing. There is always a mystery and a villain in the background. There is a formula that Amanda Quick uses when writing that is very predictable. What I like about these book is that they are good for a simple read and a quick getaway from everyday life. Narrator is okay, a little on the breathy side.

What did you love best about Dangerous: A Novel?

All of the Amanda Quick no ekes I have purchased have been so good that I have re-read numerous times. Dangerous, has lived up to the reputation. The narrator was wonderfully pleasant to listen to, story line captivating, overall wonderful

    "Love the book but"

So this has always been one of my favorite Quick novels, however, the narrator ruins it for me. She gives an overly dramatic and less than stellar performance. I've owned these books since the 90s guess I'll stick to print where this narrator is concerned.

    "a silly mess"
Would you try another book from Amanda Quick and/or Anne Flosnik?

I really like Amanda quick, but this was nothing like her other books. There is no real story. The heroine is TSTL. Even the hero calls her a fluff-brain and a ninny..and he's correct. I can't imagine any man actually wanting her, it's not believable. Also, this is a case of " insta-love", as there is no character development. I don't know why the hero likes her so much and has this great desire for her.

Would you ever listen to anything by Amanda Quick again?

I don't understand this novel, as all the other ones are very good. I will keep trying, but it may be the narrator. I don't like her. Even with all the exciting plot points her delivery is bland. How can you have a story with ghosts and read it like it was a weather report??

Would you be willing to try another one of Anne Flosnik’s performances?

I don't like her narration. I can't understand reviewers saying she is good. They have never heard R. Landor to really know a great narrator. I have avoided all of the A. Quick books read by this narrator, but got to the end of the list and had no other choice.

What character would you cut from Dangerous: A Novel?

Prudence, the heroine. She was stupid and not like the smart, strong and wise heroines I was use to from A. Quick's other books.

    Any additional comments?

The dialogue was very odd. I agree with Jane's review. The wording was out of place and disjointed. There is the dialogue that the hero uses when he is "talking" to a door lock..about opening up for him, and yes, that it and just a little more, etc. It is the same dialogue the hero uses during the love scene. He actually says that he has to open her up like a lock. Not what I think of as romantic.....unless your lover is a locksmith!!Don't bother with this book. I am writing this at the 4 hour mark and am so bored, even with all the interesting plot points..a mystery, ghosts, conspiracy and potential murder. Nothing is being developed so that you are drawn into the story. A waste of time.

    "One of my faves"

I love it when she gets that gleam in her eye. I hate it when I read a review & it tells you all about the story. Label them spoilers !
If you like Amanda Quick you will like this book. If you haven't ever read her try this one.

    "Poor Narrator"
Where does Dangerous: A Novel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Narrator so annoying that I am unable to listen beyond the first chapters. Very disappointing and really my first experience of a really poor reader for an audible book.

"Just lacked a real climax. The story lacked build."

The story line was weak and watered down. It was fairly predictable and didn't have a plot that related to the actually main characters.
