Opposites attract. Appearances can deceive. A dashing and rugged façade hides the vulnerable man within. He will gamble with his life, but never his heart. Always the observer, never the observed, her fragility hides conviction. She will risk everything for love. One fateful night they collide. The attraction is immediate, the consequences profound....

London and Hampshire, 1777: The story of Alisdair "Dair" Fitzstuart, nobleman, ex-soldier, and rogue, and Aurora "Rory" Talbot, spinster, pineapple fancier, and granddaughter of England's Spymaster General, and how they fall in love.

Another Lucinda Brant winner

This was also a very well written book with some very funny scenes especially at the very beginning of the story. Sorry to have to wait for the release of the next book in the series especially since I found no information regarding it on Audible. The second book still remains my favorite and then the Midnight Marriage but this is not to take away from Dair Devil. I felt LB did a fabulous job developing the new characters and yet mixing the old ones in this story as well, making the book feel more personal to its readers. I truly enjoyed this book and recommend it highly to anyone looking for substance and not fluff.

Alex Wyndham brings these Roxton men to life.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would most definitely recommend "Dair Devil" to all of my friends to read, but I'd suggest they do so after either reading or listening to the previous 3 in this series.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dair Devil?

The most memorable moments of Dair Devil are so many that I really can't easily narrow them down.... When the young men climbed in the window in loin cloths and chased a group of dancers around the room so their buddy could come in and save the ladies was quite funny. It sounds so much like a plan a group of young fellows would devise to help one of the group look to be the her to win a ladies heart. Didn't quite turn out as planned though, and caused some embarrassing moments for those involved.

Which character – as performed by Alex Wyndham – was your favorite?

My favorite characters, were Dair, who is one of the new characters, vaguely mentioned in "Autumn Duchess". Rory, the intellectual equal of many a man, and of course, Antonia, the Duchess of Roxton from book one.

Any additional comments?

Lucinda Brant always has interesting plots, creative, strong characters, and events often based in true history. I like that she weaves her stories around the characters of one book, but also in her own subtle way, introduces characters who will show up later, so she sets the stage well, and leaves the door open to adding more layers to her series.
In the audio versions for this series, Alex Wyndham is shown to be a master of narration bringing the different characters to life through his ability to create varied, yet believable, voices/accents for each character. You can really get a feel for the character since he seems to have the ability to allow their personalities to shine through as well.

The narration is the star

It was good to get back together with previous characters. The "break in" at the beginning was hilarious.

The narration of this series is wonderfully well done. Brings out so much of the story.

My only question is where is Mary's book?

Wonderfully Written, Superbly Narrated -- love it

Any additional comments?

When a novel is not just a story, but an experience, it is such a delight. We move with the characters, sharing their emotions, feelings and experiences, not told a story but living one.

The story begins with a scene truly hilarious, a scene with tongue in cheek frolicking of the nobility’s pranks. Alisdair is known for his outlandish behavior and his willingness to take on a bet. He involves his friends in this prank. One such friend, is Rory’s brother, Lord Gasby, a bundle of energy and a brother with deep love for his sister. This prank doesn’t exactly end the way Alistair thought it would. He holds a woman in his arms tightly wrapped in drapery. Simply ludicrious and had me laughing. There was no putting this listen down!

When the flame of interest is sparked for none other than the Spymaster General’s granddaughter (the gal he held while wrapped in drapery), he knows his chances of gaining her hand will fall on deaf ears. Under the façade he uses to hide his inner self, is a person with a heart he knew not beat.
Alistair has a champion, his cousin, Her Grace the Duchess, a woman of great feeling, high spirits and enduring love. Secrets long hidden and best forgotten must be unearthed to give well deserving youth a chance of happiness.

I enjoy the saga Ms. Brant unfolds. Characters we’ve come to love from earlier in the saga take secondary positions in this story. Frankly, this wonderful saga with a narrator of such talent will remain with me for many years.

I highly recommend this series by Lucinda Brant. A saga of depth, passion, and loves of such fervor, your heart swells.

Note: I found I enjoyed the speed of the complete saga at speed 0.75x. It allows the words and divine voice of Mr. Wyndham time to appreciate.

Fantastic Listen

If you are looking for a well written and research Georgian era historical with top notch narration, this is the title for you. I loved finding a series that isn't a Regency set one, and I love that the series re-visits couples from previous books, but also work well as stand-alones. My only complaint is I have to wait until next year for the next title in the series. I can't say enough good things about the narration and hope to see Alex Wyndham narrate more historical titles.

ho hum

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I don't like series that read like a serial. Not much happens. Sex is vague. Feminine characters are somewhat prudish, strident or annoyingly virtuous.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More exciting sex

What three words best describe Alex Wyndham’s performance?

good voice, varied

Was Dair Devil worth the listening time?

not really, Not much happened. I liked the idea of the 2nd in the book series, and this book's concept wasn't bad, but the story is flat. I did like the characterization of the obnoxious sister in law, and her outrageous comments, but I did not like her as a person and wondered what the brother saw as her redeeming qualities. I felt the humor and sex were lacking.

"Love" was well described.

Historical detail, other than costumes was vague. The praise for the aristocracy was annoying. I would like a little more evidence that women were so free with their comments about male prowess.

Gorgeous new cover

If you haven’t read any of Lucinda Brandt’s engrossing Roxton series, it is helpful to read them in order. If you do you will appreciate the details and back story included in Dair Devil. I have read or listened to all of them more than once. Her extensive research, inventive plots, ability to transcend tired Romance tropes, and high quality writing mean this book is well beyond five stars.
Alex Wyndham is perfection.

Loved it!!

Alex Wyndham does one pretty good job.
I like his voice and his interpretations of the characters.

Dair & Rory (Aurora)first meeting was hilarious. Love books with humor and this one has a couple of LOL and a few smile scenes.
Loved the story, loved how they get together, loved how we revisit characters from previous books, really loved how Antonia (Duchess & Dair's cousin) "attacks" Lord Grasby (the older)and put things to right.
Not really a cliffhanger...Dair & Rory story does have an ending but what of the couple of story lines left open. Why I gave it 4 stars.
Now I want to know how they'll catch , the Weasel William Watkins, secretary to the spymaster Lord Grasby. And will spymaster Grasby keep his word and stay on the straight with Dair, Rory and the Duchess?

Lovely cleanish romance

The characters are well developed and the storyline is compelling. Above average romance. Also, it’s titillating but clean. This series is very good.

Missed a lot

This is the only book of the series I read /listened to. It flows superbly noting feels like filler and nothing is repeated. The emotional feel is captured extremely well. However I kept waiting for something to happen. It started off fun enough but never reached that level again. If it wasn't so well narrated I would have given up. I assume you would have to have been invested in the whole series to like it as much as every one else. I really feel like I must be missing something. I would have expected more war/mystery or something. It was just a very large day to day romance, with far to little angst.
The narration is outstanding.
