Publisher's summary

In the charming rural town of Trail Stop, Idaho, accessible to the outside world by only a single road, young widow Cate Nightingale lives peacefully with her four-year-old twin boys, running a bed-and-breakfast. Though the overnight guests are few and far between - occasional hunters and lake fishermen - Cate always manages to make ends meet with the help of the local jack-of-all-trades, Calvin Harris, who can handle everything from carpentry to plumbing. But Calvin is not what he seems, and Cate's luck is about to run out.

One morning, the B&B's only guest inexplicably vanishes, leaving behind his personal effects. A few days later, Cate is shocked when armed men storm the house, demanding the mystery man's belongings. Fearing for her children's lives, Cate agrees to cooperate - until Calvin saves the day, forcing the intruders to scatter into the surrounding woods.

The nightmare, however, is just beginning. Cate, Calvin, and their entire community find themselves cut off and alone with no means to call for help as the threat gathers intensity and first blood is drawn.

With their fellow residents trapped and the entire town held hostage, Cate and Calvin have no choice but to take the fight to their enemies under the cover of night. While reticent Cal becomes a fearless protector, Cate makes the most daring move of her life...into the very heart of danger.

Exactly what I was looking for!!!

FINALLY!!! A man and a woman doing the performing!!! WHY do we settle for less? This reading of another interesting story by Linda Howard is just what it should be. It's much easier to envision the story with both the male and female voice. Linda Howard remains a great writer. An interesting story and adventure. When I read Ms. Howard books I care about the characters.

Like a movie

I like having both a male and a female performer. I recognize “Jack reacher” great voice. I could actually visualize the scenes from the great writing to the great performance.

good times.

I loved this story. It was mostly intense-- a little slow at first, but that was just character development, anyway. I liked the characters, I liked the POV, and I liked the pacing of the story. I liked the two readers . . . their voices were easy to listen to, and it made for a fun read.

Good romantic suspense

This was enjoyable, the story a bit unusual and a bit unlikely but kept me listening. The readers were excellent and added to the story.

NO NO NO!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, it was so boring and the characters did not even interact until the last 2 hours of the book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Linda Howard again?

Yes, this one is just a miss.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I don't like 2 narrators, there is a pause between the voices. You can almost hear editting process.

Classic Howard.

This was one of my favorites by Linda Howard when I first read it, way back when it first came out. I still love it, but this time around I notice more holes in the story. I really like the romance between the H/h, the action sequence and reasoning behind the attack needed a little work. The best part of the book is getting to know the characters and just enjoying the slow burn between them. I would have like a little less face time with the bad guys and more from the hero of the story. The other ones I liked by Linda Howard are Now You See Her (although dated), Open Season, Mr. Perfect and To Die For (1&2). Narrator is good.

Terrible narration

With a light weight story the performance is everything. The narration was so terrible could not continue to listen.
