Publisher's Summary

In the charming rural town of Trail Stop, Idaho, accessible to the outside world by only a single road, young widow Cate Nightingale lives peacefully with her four-year-old twin boys, running a bed-and-breakfast. Though the overnight guests are few and far between - occasional hunters and lake fishermen - Cate always manages to make ends meet with the help of the local jack-of-all-trades, Calvin Harris, who can handle everything from carpentry to plumbing. But Calvin is not what he seems, and Cate's luck is about to run out.

One morning, the B&B's only guest inexplicably vanishes, leaving behind his personal effects. A few days later, Cate is shocked when armed men storm the house, demanding the mystery man's belongings. Fearing for her children's lives, Cate agrees to cooperate - until Calvin saves the day, forcing the intruders to scatter into the surrounding woods.

The nightmare, however, is just beginning. Cate, Calvin, and their entire community find themselves cut off and alone with no means to call for help as the threat gathers intensity and first blood is drawn.

With their fellow residents trapped and the entire town held hostage, Cate and Calvin have no choice but to take the fight to their enemies under the cover of night. While reticent Cal becomes a fearless protector, Cate makes the most daring move of her life...into the very heart of danger.

    "A surprise"

The mini-background does not give the book justice. I really liked the story and have listened to it twice and purchased more of Linda Howard.

"Howards most laid back Hero~ I like it~ 4 STARS"

Widow Cate has twin boys to raise in Trail Stop. When Handyman Calvin stops 2 men from holding her at gun point we soon know some one is out to GET Cate. When a Guest at Cate's B&B disappears along with the mysterious FLASHDRIVE he carries along with him. Cate and the entire town of Trailstop are soon under siege with a para miliary gang who want the flash drive at all costs. This is a fun. Cate is clueless that handiman Calvin one of the most laid back of all Howards stud hunks is hopeless in love with her, and he is barely on any ones radar. When he drops 2 men with guns to save Cate we learn the quiet guy is ex military. The shy handiman turn hero is very good in this one. I give this 4 STARS for first rate story and characters and very good reader~ and one of the more interesting characters Calvin who shows us sometimes the quiet ones are the most fun.

    "good times."

I loved this story. It was mostly intense-- a little slow at first, but that was just character development, anyway. I liked the characters, I liked the POV, and I liked the pacing of the story. I liked the two readers . . . their voices were easy to listen to, and it made for a fun read.

    "Love Linda Howard"

But I really didn't like this title as much on audio as I did in paperback. Joyce Bean and Dick Hill are fabulous, and I have loved their reads of other Howard novels. I think that this book isn't as strong, and reading it aloud is a good way to point up weaknesses.

    "Big Linda Howard fan"

This isn't my favorite book of Ms. Howard's, but I've enjoyed it enough that I wanted to hear it as well. I think the narration was good, except for Cal's voice. I just don't think a woman gets the man's voice right. That is really the only reason I couldn't give this book a 5th star. Try it. I think you'll find it suspenseful and enjoyable.

    "Cover of the Night"

Huge Linda Howard fan for years. Think I've read everyone of her novels. Wasn't too impressed with this one. Thought the story was good, characters interesting, but started losing interest 1/2 way through. The "bad guys" were almost laughable at their ineptness and then the story became pretty predictable. Not one of her best.

    "Disappointing"
Would you try another book from Linda Howard and/or Joyce Bean and Dick Hill ?

    I am not sure

    Any additional comments?

A very long start with repetitive dialogues. In contrast to that an abrupt ending of a very unrealistic story.

"Exactly what I was looking for!!!"

FINALLY!!! A man and a woman doing the performing!!! WHY do we settle for less? This reading of another interesting story by Linda Howard is just what it should be. It's much easier to envision the story with both the male and female voice. Linda Howard remains a great writer. An interesting story and adventure. When I read Ms. Howard books I care about the characters.

    Story
"Absurd plot, but enjoyable romantic suspense"

Excellent narrators. Good story, if absurdly implausible. Armed with high powered rifles and bombs, six men try to take out a small isolated community simply to recover a flash disk, and maybe also to get even. They didn't know about the handyman, a former Marine reconnaissance expert. Hah! Felt almost like a western, but it's contemporary.

Fun relationship development between Cal and Cate, leading up to a few brief smexy scenes. Loved her little twins, Tucker and Tanner. I also liked the various secondary characters and the mountainous setting -- Trail Stop, Idaho.

I had already read the book, so I knew the story, but the POV switches a lot, and this might be confusing to listeners. Also, the author devoted far too many pages to the villains' points of view.
