Publisher's Summary

Accused of stealing artifacts from a 500-year-old shipwreck, underwater archaeologist Erica Kesling is determined to clear her name. She's concealed her past and taken a job certain to give her access to the buyer of the missing antiquities. She's finally closing in on her goal when she's distracted by a sexy, charismatic intern who makes her want something other than revenge.

But Lee Scott is no intern. He's looking for the lead conspirator in an international artifact smuggling scheme, and Erica is his prime suspect. He'll do whatever it takes to win her trust and get her to reveal her secrets, even seduce her.

As Erica and Lee struggle to conceal their real agendas, the one thing they can't hide is the attraction that burns hot between them. When Erica's quest puts her life in jeopardy, Lee must choose between old loyalties and a woman he never expected to fall for.

"OK but boring and wordy at times.."

I have admit it took a loooong time to get to what happened in the Prologue, at 60% or so but nothing was really said, a sentence or two. There was a lot, lot, lot of talk about the Menanichoch Indians and Thermo-Con. This was only a little interesting so I did found myself skimming to get out of the semi-boring stuff.

I did like Lee and Erica but the secrets she kept from him and vise-versa. It was so angsty and I had found myself wishing they would just TALK, which they didn’t do until about 90% of the book. If you like angst and secrets this book is for you.

At 50%, it was all about sex. I don’t remember anything being said in the first half the book about an erection, or desire or wanting or anything. Then he was hard ALL the time and they were going at it like minks ALL the time. And their time shopping was just stupid! First the dress then the under things. (More skimming.) I felt like I was already into the book 500 pages when I was only on about 210.

At 80% there was still nothing about the woman getting killed in the prologue. Holy hell, why was it even written in. However, at 91% we got to the answer. It was OK but nothing too exciting.

Anyway, it was an OK story but I don’t think I’ll read any other books by this author. I did a lot of skimming and that’s never a good sign.

The best part of the whole book was when Erica kicked the asses of the two of the bad guys.

All the sex was during the last 50%, again and again. There was a little bit of swearing and the F-bomb was released 41 times.

As to the narrator: She was truly awful when it came to the men’s voices. She did have some emotions but if the men sound like women that’s a bad thing. And, OMG, when Lee and Erika had sex it was like two women talking, which would have been OK if I’d been reading a lesbian book. And there were times that her voice threatened to put me to sleep, especially during that long drawn out talk the senator gave her and Lee. Good grief, she read soooo slooow. She might have gotten better in 2016 but in April of 2014 she was terrible.

This is the first of her books I have listened to. A surprise. The reader didn't really do much in changing her voice, but there some slight differences. I thought she had a good voice and would listen to her again. The story was interesting as well. Thanks

Perfect combination of love, mystery, and adventure for me!
I love when a story twists at the end with something you never suspected, and it's believable! Great listen!

"Started strong, then wore me down."
What disappointed you about Concrete Evidence?

The lead female character was ridiculously inept for someone who is supposed to be a Ph.D. candidate. About two hours from the end, when I realized I no longer cared whether she lived or died, I deleted the book.

What was most disappointing about Rachel Grant’s story?

Despite a great premise and strong opening chapters, the conflicting agendas of the two main characters went on, and on ... and on. The female lead character had numerous opportunities to bring the villain to justice, but she apparently was determined to be a victim.

    Any additional comments?

The reader is actually very good, and I enjoyed listening to the story for about the first five hours, but then the perpetual distrust between Erika and Lee grew tiresome, and finally redundant, and I deleted the book with 2 hrs 29 mins remaining.

    Story
"Okay thriller that holds the interest"

Not that bad really, I enjoyed listening to this - mostly! It’s a mystery thriller, with two seemingly totally separate mysteries; the start sets up number one in the 50’s, then comes up to present day with Erica, stressed, living on the breadline and on her nerves, providing the intro to the other problem.
Heroine Erica (gorgeous with a tumbling mane of hair) and hero Leigh (chiselled features and equally gorgeous) narrate alternate sections, a good device to get both sides of the story all the time, which worked well. I didn’t like how Erica is such a victim of her hormones! At one poiont Leigh belittles her in front of a potentially important client, essentially reducing her to a sex object, and when she’s in a position to lay into him for his behaviour, she starts with a somewhat juvenile “I hate you”, and even when she discovers the depths of his deceit she still crumbles when he kisses her - which had me rolling my eyes and muttering.

    MINOR SPOILER

About half way through theres a scene I found quite uncomfortable to listen to. They’ve finally got into bed, and the immediate post coital moment, with her naked underneath him and glowing, he starts questioning her about what he sees as her lies. When she tries to get up he pins her, holding her hands above her head, not letting her get away, and compounds this threatening, heavy behaviour, by kissing her. I was really uncomfortable with this - it smacked of abusive relationships, a “c’mon baby you know you want it really” sort of thing - and when she doesn’t run the minute she can, but lets him comfort her, I was so furious with her! I’d never, ever forgive behaviour like that. And at that stage she has no idea of the depth of his deception - poor Erica!

    END OF SPOILER

The ending - did I spot the baddies? No - you’re led rather heavily to one (this isn’t including the obvious two who wear “I’m bad” signs round their necks from the off, but the other - nope. The end wraps up both mysteries, maybe a bit neatly, I found the endless declarations of lurve and happy-ever-after (after knowing each other for 2 weeks and both lying their heads off about who or what they are???) a bit OTT, as was his flashing the cash, “hey sweet-cake (or whatever he calls her) buy yourself some pretties on me, oh and I’ve refurnished your home, you can thank me nicely later…” (I paraphrase somewhat!). But, for all I’m sounding negative, I had no trouble listening to this right through while attacking the treadmill and doing my abs.

It’s not badly read - at first I found the narration a bit flat, and there was little character separation - I struggled a bit to work out who was who - but either I tuned in, or the narrator warmed up, and it ceased to be a problem.

    "Dire"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure. Weak characterisation meant that I didn't much care about what happened to them.

What was most disappointing about Rachel Grant’s story?

The two main characters were beautiful and handsome, with perfect bodies. She leans over a pool table and he gets an erection. As if.

What three words best describe Meredith Mitchell’s voice?

    I can't remember

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No
