I shouldn't have remembered him. He was just a guy who walked through a restaurant. I didn't know his name. We never made eye contact. There was no connection between us at all. But I could feel him. The tingle down my spine. The command in his presence. The snap of tension in the air around him. That was the first time I saw him, and I was captivated. The second time was different. He was in the mysterious back elevator of my apartment building. Our eyes met for a fleeting second before the doors closed, and I was staggered. My breath was robbed. My senses on high alert. My body hummed. That was just the beginning. He was the leader of the mafia. I was about to fall in love with him, and his name...Cole Mauricio.

I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
I loved loved loved Carter Reed and had this book preordered eagerly awaiting its release.. but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It could've been because of the 'too young' narration which didn't fit the characters, it could've been because I was expecting more than just TWO chapters from Cole's POV.. or it could've been because of the storyline.
For me, the first third of the book dragged on a bit too much before Addison eventually spoke to Cole, she kept secrets from her best friend who had supported and stood by Addison through, and long after, her husband's death.. and any sex scenes were tepid, weak and extremely mild. However, on the plus side there was mystery, secrets, a twist or three and Cole.. well he was everything I hoped he'd be - protective, mysterious, loyal, sexy, dangerous.. and smokin hot.
Worth a credit? Sorry, but it's a 50/50 this time round.
I love this Author, why use narrators that don"t fit the story???? refund!!! huge disappointment!!!
Avid listener while doing everything from chasing after my toddler to running errands. Fan of all Romance, PRN & fantasy, mystery thrillers.
The story was excellent. The narrators did an excellent job, however the female narrator was too youthful sounding for this story. A more mature sounding narrator would have been a better fit for the story theme and characters. It was slightly distracting to me as a listener/reader. Other than that it was excellent. If you can handle the voice not fitting the characters than check it out.
I LOVE Tijan, I have devoured EVERY book she has written, and read or listened to most more than once.
This story is no different- however, I think it's best left in print.
This narrator is indeed talented, and I believe has the ability to make a story a great listen... just not this one.
It didn't work for me, it felt wrong and made it hard to listen to the story.. distracting and unsettling.
I am an avid reader, not a professional book reviewer. I gladly offer my opinion of the books I read/listen to.
I really like a mafia romance that offers something besides an inside view of the hostile work environment. This book delivers! Unlike other "dark" romance novels, this one focuses on the journey of the two people as the decide to choose each other despite the outside influences that could keep them apart. I don't like to give spoilers, but I found this book to be entertaining, with all the right "feels" for a good romance novel.
I enjoyed the storyline, but the female performance was lacking. However Tijan is such a great author I did not feel it was fair to knock her work by giving it less than the four stars. I found it was well worth my credit do to the characters and story line. NOT the performance which is why it did not get a five star rating.
Too busy to read as much as I'd like, Audible is the perfect solution. I'm a romance reader mostly, but can stray into any story.
I love a good mafia story and this one doesn't disappoint. There's so much intrigue and the mystery of the unknown that it kept me listening from start to finish.
A couple of things bothered me that kept this from ranking higher. The first is the amount of times that the words "best friends" is spoken. These characters are 30 and for them to not only speak to each other in third person using the term "best friend" but also to never introduce each other as anything but "best friend", it got a little distracting for me. If I had the ebook, I would be giving an exact number those words were spoken, but it was a lot.
The next is that I felt the female main character accepted this extreme lifestyle very easily. I am not so sure that it is in any way realistic or believable. Not that it has to be, but I really thought that because of her personality, she would question it a little more.
Then there is Cole. The mafia boss, yet a gentle giant. I really wanted him to have more of a fierceness to him that I would imagine someone of his profession would have. I really wanted more from him.
So there you have it. Gripping storyline, just some things that pulled me out of the story and made me think about them instead of intently listening.
Laura Darrell and Stephen Dexter were great narrators. I, again thought Stephen should have had more of a presence in his voice for a mob boss but I can't complain when the character didn't have that presence either.
Loved it! The story was fantastic and the characters were wonderful. I'll definitely be reading more Tijan in the future (starting now)! That being said, the narrators were mostly pretty good but had a couple of misses. Carter Reed's voice needs A LOT of work. He didn't sound powerful, foreboding, or manly in any way. It was kind of disappointing. Nonetheless, I loved the book!
Sometimes the hardest thing about a review is being completely honest especially when you love the author.
Let me start my review with my wish list.
First I'm a freak, so I wished the sex scenes were a little more detailed.
Second and final, I wish Cole had a few more sections with his POV. I like reading what both people are feeling.
With my wish list out of the way, the book was amazing. I loved the characters and how strong they were. There's just something about a strong female character that really grabs me. The storyline was well written and a true page turner.
Reading this story makes me want to go back and read Carter Reeds story again.
This was a great read and I highly recommend it.
"Well worth the wait"
Hooked!!! From the first page. As a huge fan of Tijan's writing I wasn't surprised, especially due to the fact that Carter Reed is up there in my Top 10 favourite book boyfriends ever. Cole Mauricio (who we met in Carter Reed) is now my ultimate mob boss. I'm so fickle! First up we meet Addison Bowman, widowed a year earlier and her dreams/nightmares are still plaguing her. Leaving the home she shared with her husband she moves into the illusive, exclusive, Mauricio building where she eventually meets and befriends Cole. Unaware that Cole is the owner of her building and one of the most powerful people in the city, a relationship forms. Addison is aware that there is a lot more to Cole than he's willing to share, but he actually makes her 'feel alive' something she's not felt in a year. It turns out that there is a lot more happening in both their lives and nothing is quite as it seems. With so many twists and turns, intense chemistry between all the characters and a wonderfully written story, I cannot praise the book enough. Well worth the wait.
I loved the narration, just perfect.
