I am a big fan of Lisa Kleypas' historical novels, so I was a little bit reticent to start with this series, a contemporary novel about Mark Nolan, the oldest of the Nolan siblings, his newly orphaned niece Holly, and Maggie Collins, the young widow who owns the local toy shop. However, I am so glad that I did! Lisa really develops her characters and makes you care about what happens to them. There is A LOT of romance, including a sex scene, in this story, but nothing too explicit. This was one of those novels that had me running to order the rest in the series. I don't want to spoil the story for you, but I bet that those of you who are fans of sweet romances will love this book, too!
A 50-something who loves sci-fi, cozy mysteries, thrillers, an occasional romance, and any genre if it is a good story. And especially if it makes me laugh! No vampires or zombies though - these are NOT sci-fi!
This was a nice little story that could have been better if the characters were better developed. Enjoyable even so. I saw an ad for a Hallmark movie that looks like it was baed on this story. I find myself wondering which came first......
I don't know whether it is just Lisa Kleypas' incredible art at story telling or whether it is that the reader wove the tail so nicely. I just know that the characters came to life while I was listening to this book and when the story ended I was truly touched. The story was lively and had some pretty funny bits. If you are familiar with the Pacific Northwest then you will really enjoy the Tacoma bit.... No spoilers here. :) Enjoy! I did.
The story was seasonal yet light and fun. You could see whare the story was going, yet the characters were real enough and engaging in their personalities and back stories, to make the journey a fun little listen.
I enjoyed the personailities of the characters most. I am very familiar with the setting, so I wasn't drawn into the descriptions as much as someone who would be creating the images in their mind. I would think for them, that experience would also be a delight.
I probably wouldn't search her out as I do some other favored narrators, but I wouldn't not choose to listen to a book she narrates simply because she is filling that role.
Seasonal stories don't need follow ups, especially light ones like this one. It's a perfect little holiday package, don't introduce overkill.
I just Love the Allure of a Great Romance...a Pair of Rose Colored Glasses...some Fine Wine, and a Subscription to Audible...
Lisa Kleypas never disappoints! She is a gifted storyteller, and while this novel is not, perhaps as involved as many of her other novels, it is a Christmas Story, and very enjoyable.
My daughter (25) and I live about 300 miles apart, and one or our hobbies is to read/listen to books at the same time, and visit about them together on the phone.
We both loved Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor: Friday Harbor, Book 1, and believe you will too. Definitely a credit worthy, feel good holiday treat.
