Publisher's summary

The end of her journey is only the beginning....

The Barrani would be happy to see her die. So Kaylin Neya is a bit surprised by her safe arrival in the West March. Especially when enemies new and old surround her and those she would call friends are equally dangerous....

And then the real trouble starts. Kaylin's assignment is to be a "harmoniste" - one who helps tell the truth behind a Barrani Recitation. But in a land where words are more effective than weapons, Kaylin's duties are deadly. With the wrong phrase she could tear a people further asunder. And with the right ones...well, then she might be able to heal a blight on a race.

If only she understood the story....

A series that's gone on too long

Sadly, this was one of the worst books I've read this year. I very much enjoyed the first few books in the Cast In series, finding the development of Kaylin's character and the fleshing out of the other Hawks and secondary characters well done and overall making for enjoyable reads. But the last couple of books have been less enjoyable and this one was finally one too far. Every time Kaylin gets in trouble, she suddenly has yet another new power to overcome the problem, and I'm just tired of it. Plus this isn't about the city or the characters in it, but a bunch of weirdness and totally unappealing silliness. Sometimes, authors and publishers just need to let go of a series and start with a new one.

Great performance but slow story

What did you love best about Cast in Sorrow?

Hvam is always gives a great performance.

If you’ve listened to books by Michelle Sagara before, how does this one compare?

This story is slow and focuses on just one event. Many of the previous stories had multiple situations and varied characters.

Which character – as performed by Khristine Hvam – was your favorite?

All.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Please do not.

Any additional comments?

I am afraid that Michelle has run out of avenues for the story and is just casting about. She has a beautiful writing style but unfortunately nothing to say.

What happened Michelle Sagara?

I loved the first 7 books in this series but started to get a bad feeling as I struggled toward the end of book 8, Cast in Peril. Now, I'm beginning to think something is wrong in Michelle Sagara ' s personal life because book 9, Cast in Sorrow is like wading through mud. It's so bad I don't believe I'll be able to finish the book, let alone the series. What a letdown.

Not the best

This was definitely not the best of the series. I fail to see any real growth for Kaylin and am very disappointed in her constant contact and association with Nightshade. He is everything she despises yet she is somewhat attracted to him. Her desire to leave Nightshade and her childhood behind has become more and more wishy washy. Personally, I would like to see Nightshade replaced. Severn is a much more pivotal character and would like to see more character development. Have loved the series and will get the next book. Hopefully, it will track better. D

Full of good info

I have listened to all this series and find it very interesting. If you have never listened to any of these books it is a good idea to listen to Cast in Peril first. I like the lengths of the stories (although it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they were longer). The characters are colorful. Ms. Sagara has created a wonderful world. The narrator does an excellent job. This book picks up where the last one stops with alittle less action. The focus is saving Teala and the Green in the West March. There is a bunch of information about Barrani in this story including the "lost children", Teala and Nightshade. I only have one complaint I wish Kailyn would learn to make peace with her past more but I understand that she is young and seems to be trying to.

convoluted

I love the narrator. She breathes such life into the characters. I have read all of the books before this one and then listened to them as well. I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I find the characters compelling and the world of Elanntra interesting. At the same time the story itself is often very confusing and many times at the climax of the story I am annoyed with the main charater's long self-analysis as she tries to resolve the crisis at hand. I gave a 3 for the story because while I am sucked into the series, I found this story to be even more confusing than most. There was so much abstract symbolism and weirdness around names it just got ridiculous at times. I spent much of the story, asking myself "what!!?" and just hoping at some point during one the long aelf-dialogue sessions of the main character that maybe there'd be a summary of events I could actually follow. The story did end well for me and gave a little bit more information about Nightshade that was intriguing. I'm in for the long haul and will listen the rest while hoping for a clearer series of events in future books.

Not as good as the previous books in this series..

i don't know where it went wrong, but this book just didn't have the same effect on me as the others. usually i can't wait for the next one, but if it isn't any better than this one, then don't bother.

it isn't that the writing was bad, or the narration...i can't put my finger on it, but the vibe was wrong. the flow and excitement was just lacking in this one.

still and all, it's a good listen, Khristine Hvam is one of my favorites. i just wish it had the same 'something' as the other books in this series.

I like this series but ...

I'm usually finishing these stories pretty quickly, but this one was very hard to finish. I started and stopped it multiple times. I don't know what it was, but it felt like a lot of rambling and her talking to herself or asking questions that have long monologue-like answers.

The dragon made me do it

The only reason to buy this book is to get closure on the dragon situation. Should have been combined with Peril and lengthy, tedious dialogue compressed. Painful Trek to the end. Yes she is human but, should be progressing in grace and knowledge. Sick of her Whining. The way others treat her is also Unbelievable and irritating
