Publisher's summary

Seven years ago, Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered— and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin….

Since then, she's learned to read, she's learned to fight and she's become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she's made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.

But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging. Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can't trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers—powers that no other human has. Her task is simple—find the killer, stop the murders… and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

Good fiction but no romance.

Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not listened to Khristine Hvam before but found she makes the books seem more realistic and the change in peoples voices is perfect. She was consistant with her people and voice change and it made the book easy to follow.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no it was not a page turner as I would call it. I enjoyed the book but was dissapointed in how there is no romance. I kept looking for more to develope with severn but turned out to be highly disapointed.

Good story, fine narrator

Where does Cast in Shadow rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

It's pretty good, the story is decent as is the narrator.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was a little distracting- but after I got used to her, she did a good job.

Audible Obsessed

Michelle Sagara and Khristine Hvam are a great team! Sagara's storyline hooks you from the first novella. Hvam brings the characters to life and has an amazing range for the character's voices.

I'm devouring the books faster than I can get my credits for them! :P

If you like mystical characters you will love this. It was slow moving in the beginning but once I got into it very enjoyable and exciting.

FOr the Audible book
I read the books first and catching up with the Audiobooks going backwards! Since now I buy the Audiobook first, this is the last one. If you like the books please try the Audio books it's just great. The narrator does a wonderful job adding voices to the characters!

Original review for the book
I really didn't think I will be hooked to this series so quickly, I read the first book then I read all that are available in a day!! I have to admit I found the main character annoying at times when talking about the past, but with such past I suppose it is understandable. I find the world and characters interesting and looking forward to more!

A great story

What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator does a wonderful job giving the characters emotions and inflections. I am so glad to see that she continues narrating this series.

Any additional comments?

A great beginning to a series. It has some interesting twists and turns, a clearly the beginning of a larger story. I finished the first one and immediately wanted to move on to the next.

Lack of Focus!

I was initially captivated by the story line--poor orphan makes good--but as the story progressed, the characters remained static and became more and more incomprehensible. I don't think the author really knew who her characters were. I got very tired of Kaylin not knowing why she did things and saying so frequently. I couldn't find any rhyme or reason for the actions of many the characters, and I frankly gave up on the story before the end because I didn't care about any of her people. The narrator does a creditable job with poor material.

Tedious but interesting intro- for a fantasy epic

Being a strong fan of Faith Hunter's books plus The Hunger Games and Insurgent series, I decided to give Michelle Sagara's "Chronicles of Elantra" a try. "Cast in Shadow" is the first installment of her popular 11 book series. I appreciate the difficulty of creating a complex society of dragons, aerians, immortals, and humans with a few dozen important characters. However, the narrative dragged with excessive attention to mine numbing detail. The action scenes (approximately 25% of the total), actually flowed well enough to maintain my interest through the much more tediously told day to day events. The young heroine, Kaylin, is an intriguing main character and I can the see the possibilities of her evolving through subsequent adventures. Kristine Hvam did a fairly good job with the narration. I am a big fan of Jane Yellowrock, and Ms. Hvam brought equal talent to Kaylin, the variety of other female voices, and the story's narrative. However, she had some difficulty differentiating the large number of different male characters.
