Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel of redemption and suspense, as a woman haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend returns to her small South Carolina hometown....

Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt - and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child.

Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.

Now, as she returns to Progress with plans to settle in and open a stylish home-design shop, Tory is determined to find a measure of peace and free herself from the haunting visions of the past. As she forges a new bond with Cade Lavelle - Hope’s older brother and the heir to the family fortune - she isn’t sure whether the tragic loss they share will unite them or drive them apart. But she is willing to open her heart, just a little, and try.

But living so close to those unhappy memories will be more difficult and frightening than Tory could ever have expected. Because Hope’s murderer is nearby as well....

“Roberts may have achieved her personal best in this tense Southern Gothic. As atmospheric and unsettling as a Tennessee Williams play.... This is romantic drama at its best.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Great story, terrible delivery

I love this story. I read it several times when I could still see to read books. This performer was full. No emotion, no voice changes. Pretty much monotone.

Poor Narration

I enjoyed the story, it was good, but the narrator was AW-FUL!!! she was boring, gave no life to the characters & half of her dialogue sounded like mouthful of run on sentences. I finished the book b/c I was really into the story, but could have been told better.

Terrible choice of narrator

Old voice for a young woman, very confusing. Made it hard to picture the characters.

Still enjoyable romantic suspense

Originally published in March 2000, this story still holds up with very little reference to technology. I still enjoyed it and can recommend it. The Publisher’s Summary does a good job providing the storyline.
I didn’t connect with the main characters as strongly as with several of Roberts’ books, but there were many moments that really touch the heart. This book is probably more realistic with the annoying characters and moments.
Robertson has a very pleasant voice to listen to, characters are differentiated well, and SHE does a professional job of narration. But her voice is more matronly to me - mature housewife and mother.

Good story, disappointing narration.

Did not like the narrator’s gravelly voice. The lead character consequently sounded like an old, homely woman.

Don't buy this!!

I love this book but I didn't care for the narrator at all. She never varied her tone or voice, and it sounds like one long sentence.

Probably my new favorite book

I don’t understand why there are any negative reviews on this title. It was so engaging. There was suspense, humor, quirkiness, romance. What more is there.

I really enjoyed the characters and particularly loved Faith. I could read an entire series with Faith as a character.

The narrator, had a really great voice that took my stress level down just listening.
