Publisher's Summary

The Arcane Society was born in turmoil when the friendship of its two founders evolved into a fierce rivalry. Sylvester Jones and Nicholas Winters each sought to enhance their individual psychic talents. Winters’ efforts led to the creation of a device of unknown powers called the Burning Lamp. Each generation the Winters man who inherits it is destined to develop multiple talents—and the curse of madness.

Plagued by hallucinations and nightmares, notorious crime lord Griffin Winters is convinced he has been struck with the Winters Curse. And the instincts that have helped him survive the streets and rise to power are now drawing him toward Adelaide Pyne, the bothersome social reformer. But even as he arranges a meeting with the mysterious woman, he has no idea how closely their fates are bound, for Adelaide holds the Burning Lamp in her possession.

A dreamlight reader, Adelaide should be able to manipulate the Lamp’s light to save both Griffin’s sanity and his life. But their dangerous psychical experiment makes them the target of forces both inside and outside of the Arcane Society. And though desire strengthens their power their different lives will keep them apart—if death doesn’t take them together.

Dream on: listen to more of the Dreamlight trilogy.

What the Critics Say

"Bestseller Jayne Ann Krentz, writing under her historical fantasy nom de plume, turns in a top-notch performance in the second Dreamlight novel....Fast-paced and cleverly constructed, the tale perfectly balances lively adventure, passionate romance, and the paranormal against an elaborate and refreshingly original background. Arcane Society fans will be thrilled, and new readers will find this stand-alone story very accessible." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Story is great- narration poor"

This is a great story and will be more enjoyable if one had read/listened to the other titles in the Arcane Society Books, though it isn't essential.

Unfortunately, the narration is of very poor quality which is astonishing in a Brilliance Audio title! I haven't quite decided whether the reader just has a harsh, unpleasant voice or she was so utterly bored with the story that it came out that way. I actually checked my mp3 player several times to make certain that it was playing at the proper speed. The reader's uninterest in the story is very obvious.

It's a shame since this is an interesting story. I hope that this is the last book she reads for Amanda Quick, Jayne Castle, Jayne Ann Krentz. Since I am major fan of this author.

"It is the second part of a trilogy"

This book is the second part of a trilogy that starts in the present with a book called "Running Hot" written by the same autor under the name Jayne Ann Krentz (the name sunhe uses for contemporany books), this part ("Burning Lamp") is written under the name Amanda Quick (used for historical books) and, the third, is going to be published under the nane Jayne Castle and the story will take place in a imaginary future (as always happens with the books written with that name).

Anyway the three books can be read separately. For example this is the first that I have read and I have enjoyed it a lot.

I like Fantasy & Science Fiction but not into Zombie. Due to Health issues, listen to Audiobooks/read ebooks where I can enlarge the print

    "Excellent as always"

The Dreamlight Trilogy is a subset of the Arcane Series this is the 2nd book, the last book is set in the Harmony Universe. If your looking for a steamy sex scene every 2nd page with cardboard characters this author is not for you.

I noticed some reviews complaining about the audio I had no issue with the narrator it makes me wonder what sort of equipment they use to listen to audio books . . . for example I tried to listen to one on my Kindle DX but the Audio quality of the machine leaves a lot to be desired and since space is limited on a Kindle it does not make for a good Audio book/music device. On my iPhone 3g or my Mac they sound excellent . . .

I also recommend the next book in series MIDNIGHT CRYSTAL BY JAYNE CASTLE another pseudonym used by Jayne Ann Krentz But unfortunately since I don't live in the US I can't download the first book due publisher greed geographic slice up. You can just about always buy the printed book here in Australia, but various audio books by various authors have around a 50% chance of not being available in audible format here but sometimes you can buy the same thing in CD or MP3 format go figure. The same stupidity reins in the ebook universe & its even worse due to the number of formats available eg books 1 & 2 might be available in ereader, book 3 not available here and 5 only available in Kindle format.

Eye issues means that the majority of my books be audio & the occasional large print format ebook.

I wish Audible would list authors with their pseudonym's. Consistent with series and book numbers would be also great.

Jayne Ann Krentz writes books that cover the gauntlet from historical to modern to the future of world harmony series. Most follow the 2/3 character background build then someone does something stupid & gets caught or leaves a gap for the bad guys. The last 1/3 is the chase tidy up like a lot of books these days use, but the detail and character development is better than average. Enjoy

"Love the Arcane Soc.Stories, Hate this Narrator!"

I cannot believe how awful this narrator is - and what is worse, she is reading for some of my favorite authors. I love the tales of the Arcane Society and Jones Family but I cringe now every time I hear a book read with this voice and accent. Maybe if she skipped the accent it would be better! Just be warned that you are in for hours of listening to someone talk like their nose was stuffed up!

"I'm sure the story is probably good"

...but I cannot finish because of the narrator. She sounds like a bucket of rusty nails. Her male voices sound weird and too dramatic. I wish I had not bought this audio and had instead bought the hard cover. I wasted good credits/money.

    "Good Summer Listen"

Amanda Quick is light listening yet has enough new twists to hold interest. It's certainly different to have a crime lord as the hero. The two key figures are well matched. As to narrator, I guess it's the old analogy of I say toe-may-toe and you say toe-mah-toe. I like Anne Flosnick and she seems suited for this type of story.

    "Love it!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Burning Lamp to be better than the print version?

Ok, I'm a big Amanda Quick fan but this was a great listen. The story had lots of twists and turns and kept me intrigued. If you love her books, you'll enjoy this audiobook.

    "Fuzzy Narration"

Burning Lamp is a fine story and a welcome addition to the Arcane Society series. Unfortunately, this audio book is the beginning of the end for narrator Anne Flosnik.

Somewhere along the line Ms. Flosnik decided that her performances were Shakespeare plays and that she must over pronounce her words by dragging out the endings of words in an overly dramatic stage voice. Nearly every one of her works after April of 2010 suffer from the same problem. Simply put, she destroyed herself with that process. I do believe that's one of the main reasons that Recorded Books picked up the Amanda Quick books. Of course, Barbara Rosenblat isn't that much of an improvement.
