Publisher's Summary

On a rainy Southern night, Jade Sperry endured a young woman's worst nightmare at the hands of three local hell-raisers.

Robbed of her youthful ideals and at the center of scandal and tragedy, Jade ran as far and as fast as she could. But she never forgot the sleepy "company town" where every man, woman, and child was dependent on one wealthy family. And she never forgot their spoiled son, who with his two friends changed her life forever.

Someday, somehow, she'd return...exacting a just revenge, freeing herself from her enemies' grasp, and, perhaps, fulfilling a lost promise of love.

    "Heck of a story --"

I don't usually buy anything by Sandra Brown -- way too much kissy-face stuff for me. All the same, if you can deal with all the passionate love scenes and smoldering glances among and between the characters, there's a heck of a story there, too.

I'm not sure why I bought this one, don't remember doing it, but all in all, I don't regret it. Indeed it has too much romance for me -- not to mention x-rated scenes (I just take the earplugs out then keep checking until it's safe to return) but all around that is a tense and interesting story, one I'm glad I didn't miss.

Maybe most interesting is that Jade, the protagonist, has some of the hallmarks of a modern-day Dagney Taggert, all the bluff ability, the steely stare, the absolute drive to succeed in a male-dominated field of building construction. Where she got all that ambition is her secret, one she means to keep secret forever.

It's a good story, a good listen. I don't know that I'll seek out any more Sandra Brown books, but if another one comes my way, I surely won't say no.

    A good listen.
    Great narrator.
A heads up, there are a few sex scenes described in depth.
Mostly believable characters, those you don't, you find yourself wanting to for the sake of the story.
A good long listen without wanting to skip over any parts.

"romance/sex scenes-- overdone is an understatement"

I like the Sandra Browns, but this must have been one of her earlier attempts, perhaps with an early intention to develop a readrship in the lonely/jaded lady crowd. It has a good story line, with great underlying personal tension, and lots of the SB classic plot and development which has become her strength in more recent works (e.g. "Envy"). But the romance and sex scenes are way overdone, too long, even "cheseball" at times, and disturbingly distracting. (The quality of the naration is fine; but I found myself fast-forwarding through the sappy "romance" parts). It is also somewhat predictable, and laden with clecheish stereotypes; some of which were inconsistent, and others not believable. Nevertheless, it is a good "window" to SB's earlier years as an author, and I still give it a three star for the idea and story line alone. But I would urge SB to do a re-write on this one because the story and underlying theme have the potential to become a greater novel.

    "Not bad"

Breath of Scandal is a decent book; the premise is essentially 'underdog makes good', which is always satisfying on one level or another. I found the ending to be kind of anticlimactic, but all in all, it was a decent, distracting listen.

The fact that it's a book about a female rape victim, but is narrated by a man, makes it a bit jarring, but since I have a secret crush on Dick Hill, it all worked out just fine for me.

    Worth the credit!

Reading is in my DNA. Dad, Granddad and Grandma were all journalists and crazy readers. When I can't read, I listen!

    "Awkward Narration"

This the first audiobook I've listened to where I have barely been able to finish the book due to the narration. While the story itself was well written, and well-paced with good characterization, I found the narrator's breathy attempts to sound female annoying and distracting.

I kept listening to this just to see if it could roll out of it's cliched rut. It didn't.

    "well I liked it"

This book was actually very good. I loved the characters and I loved the way the writer wove the characters lives together in a way that was a surprise. It all led to a predictable end but the journey was interesting and worth it.

I so enjoyed this book that I didn't want it to end but I coiuldn't wait to get to the end.
I happen to be a Sandra Brown fan and will read whatever she writes. I enjoyed the span of the book and the way she brought the characters together. Just when you were satisfied the way their lives were going....something changed. It's a good read.

I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!

    "Too Much Tragedy"

I almost gave up in the first half of this book because it was just one tragic event after another. I persevered and throughly enjoyed the second half of the book. Dick Hill did an excellent job with the narration. On the whole the book is worth listening to.
