Publisher's summary

I'm no coward. I want to make that perfectly clear. But after my life turned into a horror movie, I take fear a lot more seriously now. I finally became Dr. Carrie Ames just eight months ago. Then I was attacked in the hospital morgue by a vampire. Just my luck.

So now I'm a vampire, and it turns out I have a blood tie to the monster who sired me. The tie works like an invisible leash, and I'm bound to him no matter what I do. And of course he's one of the most evil vampires on earth. With my sire hell-bent on turning me into a soulless killer and his sworn enemy set to exterminate me, things couldn't get much worse...except I'm attracted to them both.

Drinking blood, living as an immortal demon, and being a pawn between two warring vampire factions isn't exactly how I'd imagined my future. But as my father used to say, the only way to conquer fear is to face it. So that's what I'll do. Fangs bared.

Don't miss the rest of the Blood Ties series, including Book Two, The Possession and Book Three, Ashes to Ashes, and Book Four, All Souls' Night.

if you love 'bodice ripper novels'...

Unfortunately, I do not. I listened to this book back in late 2006 - I am writing my review now (on this and other titles) to try to help other audible listeners find the 'right' novel for themselves. I have over 200 audiobooks in my library, and have written only a handful of reviews... so here goes.
Short and simple - this is a graphic (not offensively so... I am not a prude) 'bodice ripper' romance (romance is used generously, here- 'lust-mance' would be more appropriate) - not the kind of novel I enjoy.
I highly prefer novels with well-developed characters and intricate (or at least well thought out/developed) plot lines. This novel has none of those characteristics. It is a story about lust, unwanted lust, and unfulfilled lust. In that category - it's not a horrible book, just a bad one.
However, if you really like lusty romance novels that are light on plot but with entertainment value - you might enjoy this.

Meh

Very little suspension of disbelief in this novel. I constantly found myself removed from the story by the ridiculous actions of the heroine. There are too many moments that any reasonable person would find atrocious and horrifying that the main character overlooks. The best parts are the little bits of erotica thrown in, but even that is unreasonable in the context.

Vampire potboiler crap!

I had read a bunch of "glowing" reviews of this book on Amazon.com but I should have known they were plants. This book is poorly written vampire porn. The narrator is decent enough until she tries to do voices other than the main characters and then she becomes a cartoon. Also, if hot vampire sex is your bag, be prepared to just get teased for at least half the book before getting your cheesey pay off.

average at best

I am a huge fan of vampier genre. This is not the best, but fairly entertaining. The narrator was great in the main character. However, the supporting characters were ear piercing. I felt parts were a little drawn out. I am not even sure if I would listen to the sequal.

so-so

The story is pretty light and breezy. The dialogues reflect this.

Having read L.K. Hamilton's and Kim Harrison's books, I found this title somewhat lacking. The action "wasn't." Really. And the erotica was less than skillful. In fact, it could have been left out entirely.

The narrator has a voice that I could listen to while she read grocery lists. However, her characterizations aren't quite perfected and "Nathan's" accent frequently slips towards the end of long phrases.

Overall, it was entertaining enough, though I won't continue with the series.

Painful

I wanted some vampire drivel, and boy how! This delivered!
Needing some tedious, mind numbing literature to get me through an 8 hour drive, I got this (and the 2nd of the serious) as the summaries read interestingly enough. My moan of excruciation began with "Audible Inc. and Harlequin bring you..." and continued through the trashy "passion" scenes. How come from the male characters' viewpoint these scenes are romantic and full of love while from the female character's they are all hard core porn?
The second of the series proved worse and I found myself fast forwarding; no desire to hear anymore of the series.
Why would I subject myself to the second, you ask? The narrator. Her rendition of the annoying witch was so off kilter that it kept me awake when the monotony of the highway threatened to creep in.
To sooth myself after these, I flipped on Pride & Prejudice.

Book good, reader stinks

Some of the most brutal meanest characters in this book are made to sound like a cross between Roseanne and Mickey Mouse, that have been smoking a pack a day and their undershorts are hiked to high. I just dont understand it, did the reader think we could take the soul eater/stealer seriously by making him sound like that? And seriously, its hard to hear sexual encounters or to take them seriously when hearing them in these voices. The story wasnt bad if you can get past the readers voice, at times it even hurt my ears listening to her. Have they no shame?

Very Good

I have to be honest in saying when I heard "Harlequin Romance" in the opening lines, I was concerned I would get a cavity from a sappy love story. My fears were removed almost immediately. I really liked the plot and enjoyed listening to the narrator. I did not find the voices cartoonish when different charactors were read and I appreciated the tone and pace throughout the recording. "Book One" implies more from this author is planned and I for one am looking forward to it.

Vampire Romance For the Horror Fan

This is not a book for the reader looking for a plain old romance. The characters pull you in despite being less than sympathetic. Conceit wars with empathy and love in this novel. It is about the ego each person has. Mistakes are made because of overconfidence. People die, people are hurt.

I found myself wanting to know when the next book would be available. This isn't quite up to earlier Charlaine Harris or Tanya Huff's early vampire novels, but it is well worth listening to and shows promise from a new author. I will be watching for her future books.

I am still relatively new to the "Chick Lit" and "Romance" markets - but must say that the literary quality is right up there with what is produced in other genres, including general fiction.

I have to agree that the narrator could have differentiated the voices more - some characters sounded alike when they should not have. I, however, think she did a more than adequate job of reading this audiobook.

Harlequin, please release more on Audible.

story good, narrator awful

This book would have been very good, had it not been for the narrator. Just as others have said, she was fine as the main character, but terrible as the supporting characters.
