Publisher's summary

An alluring laird....

He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart - until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland.

Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the 16th-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length - but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.

A prisoner in time....

She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side.

Great Scot! Don't miss our other titles in the Highlander series.

Critic reviews

"Phil Gigante's handling of the prose in Moning's clever paranormal romance is smooth and engaging, but it is his character voicings that truly make this recording one to remember." (AudioFile)

I laughed so many times while listening

Bought on Audible
Audio Rating: 3.5
Story: 4.0

What I Loved: Adrienne was such a perfect woman for a man like the Handsome Hawk. I laughed so many times while listening to this book, pretty sure the people around me thought I was a bit crazy. It really was just such a fantastic combination of romance and humor. Really the best part is that this is a Paranormal romance but the two leads are perfectly human. It really was a great twist on the genre.

What I Liked: How the Fey played into the story and getting a glimpse into the couple that started the Guardians that we see in the Fever series. I actually think reading that series first added a little extra oomph to this book!

Complaints: None

Audio Specific Review: Narrated by Phil Gigante (who was the male voice in the last 2 of the Fever Series) and he did an excellent job on Hawk's and the rest of the male voices. It took awhile to get use to the voice that he used for Adrienne though, it was a little to high pitched for my taste. Still a very fun listen and Phil has a knack for pacing (not to fast, not to slow)!

Why I gave it a 3.75: The story was very strong and the audio was pretty good also. It was fun, sweet, and full of great Historical moments that I love!

Who I would recommend this too: Historical and Paranormal Romance readers. This romance has a bit of both!

Bad story, terrific narration!

It's a silly, typical bodice ripper, badly written - laughable actually - with EXCELLENT narration and production value! Phil Gigante talking in Scottish brogue is amazing! Pity about the actual STORY! LOL

Time travel

This isn't my favorite of Ms Moning's Highlander books, but it is a good introduction to the series and the "world" she's created. She's set up the fae world as the means of time travel. More often than not, I wanted to smack Hawk and Adrienne upside the head. Just a little communication could have resolved so many of the issues... and it wasn't fun to keep listening to them rehash the same issues and insecurities over and over again. I mean, they were valid, but I could have used something more for the conflict rather than them just hanging on.

The narration saved this book. Paul Gigante is wonderful to listen to. I'd happily listen to more books he's narrated as his tone and pacing is perfect, brogue is spot on.

I"ll likely continue this series with hopes that it gets better.

Good, not great.

I love Karen Marie Moning's "Highlander" series, but even I will be the first to admit that the first book in the series is not the best of them. The narrator is fantastic but the story is meh. I find the constant wishy-washy nature of the protagonist annoying, but the good news is the remainder of the series only gets progressively better as you go. Book 1 is ok as an introduction to the Highlander world, but one read through is enough.

Held my attention

Would you listen to Beyond the Highland Mist again? Why?

I would listen to it again because I blew through it so fast the first time that I may have missed something...

Who was your favorite character and why?

I was entralled by all the characters because they were 3D for me.

Which character – as performed by Phil Gigante – was your favorite?

The Hawk was my favorite.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Lady Douglas was forced to break Lord Hawk's heart, I was moved with emotion.

Any additional comments?

A good read for those who enjoy romance novels. The story brought to mind "The Taming of the Shrew" without the Elizabethan verbiage. Although I would have loved for the Fake father to get his just deserts. .
